The Israeli attack on Gaza and the sovereign state of Lebanon is part
of Bush's war against Iraq--part of a decades-long war against the Arab
people and the people of the Middle East.

The Bush regime pays the bills for the Israeli war machine and has
given it a green light to go to war. And it is using the
Israeli-created crisis as a pretext for attacks on Syria and Iran.

Israel has launched a terror bombing against the people of Gaza and
Lebanon, allegedly in response to the capture of Israeli soldiers by
Palestinian and Lebanese freedom fighters. This excuse is a lie.
Israeli artillery murdered a dozen civilians in Gaza, including a
family resting on the beach, the week before Corporal Shalit was
captured.

Israel's invasion of Gaza and kidnapping of Palestinian ministers were
planned six months ago. What Israel seeks is the overthrow of
Palestine's democratically elected government. And the Bush regime
seeks complete control over the Middle East for the greater profit of
Big Oil and the military-industrial complex.

The three captured Israeli soldiers are not hostages, as Israeli Prime
Minister Ehud Olmert claims. They are volunteers in the brutal, racist
Israeli military. They are prisoners of war. The real hostages are the
9,000 Palestinian political prisoners, including hundreds of women and
children, held in Israeli concentration camps. They are illegally
imprisoned, and many have been tortured. If the Israeli state cared
about its soldiers' welfare, it would agree to a prisoner exchange.

The three POWs are the latest of many pretenses used by Israel to
justify decades of war and terror against the people of Palestine,
Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and Jordan. Since the Palestinian people were
forced from their homes by force and massacre in 1948, hundreds of
thousands of Arab women, men and children have been murdered and maimed
by Israeli bombs and missiles. And the U.S. government has spent
hundreds of billions to make this possible. The U.S. poured arms and
aid to Israel while the people of New Orleans drowned, while Katrina
evacuees are being evicted onto the street, while tens of millions in
this country lack health care.

The International Action Center calls on justice-loving people in the
U.S. and the world over to stand in solidarity with the people of
Palestine and Lebanon. They have a right to defend themselves. They
have a right to fight for land and freedom. They have a right to seek
freedom for their unjustly imprisoned compatriots.

The Lebanese and Palestinian combatants--be they in Hezbollah, Hamas or
the Popular Resistance Committees--are not terrorists. They are freedom
fighters, like the Spear of the Nation in South Africa, like the Jewish
resisters of the Warsaw Ghetto. The Israelis, with their mass
collective punishment of civilians, are emulating the Nazis.

We salute the stand of the Congress of South African Trade Unions
(COSATU), which fought so long against a white minority regime backed
by Israel and the United States. COSATU has denounced Israeli apartheid
as worse than that in South Africa, and called for international
sanctions against the racist Israeli settler state. The South African
Council of Churches has also adopted this call.

Peace in the Middle East is possible. It requires an end to occupation
from Iraq to Palestine, the freedom of Lebanese and Palestinian
prisoners and the right of displaced Palestinians to return to their
homes. It requires the U.S. to withdraw from the region and stop
financing the brutal Israeli war machine.

The US gives Israel 2-3 billion dollars per year in mostly military aid. This amounts to 7% of the Israeli budget. I point out that Eqypt gets roughly the same amount in aid. Nobody seems to notice that. Many people in Israel, myself included think we should decline US aid and with it US strings.

All agree that Iran has recently transfered as many as 13,000 Kaytuscha Mk-3 rockets to Hezbollah, along with an undisclosed number that could reach Tel Aviv from lebanon.

Israel makes its own small arms, ammunition, trucks, tanks large guns and munitions. Israeli Military Industries(IMI) is the major supplier.A complete blockade would hurt but Israel would have no real trouble going it alone with domestic munitions. Can Hezbollah say the same?

The current president of Iran has repeatedly said that Israel should be wiped off the map. Hamas and Hezbollah also call for the complete elimination of Israel. Hezbollah goes one up and calls for the complete extermination of all Jews everywhere. Jews evacuating Israel would no doubt make Hezbollah very happy but their stated endgame is the extermination of Jews.

Well We're not leaving. And we will not tolerate neighbors who have sworn our extermination. We will not allow Hezbollah to fire rockets at Israel using lebanese civilians as cover. This conflict will be determined by which side can field the better army.

The real question is why haven't we heard from Tee Wdumbya yet. He was very vocal when I said the same thing yesterday.

B.A., there's much to improve in Israel. I wouldn't mind the Israeli govt. running another country, but certainly do not accept what passes for ruling norms in Israel. The problems here are endless. That it's worse in Arab countries is little consolation to me.

Unfortunately even Tel Aviv has poor neglected neighborhoods in the southern part of the city. It's sort of like Harlem or Watts but on a much smaller magnitude and enormity. Other towns and cities are neglected too, not to mention that the south and north of the country are always given the stick's short end generally. Too many Americans seem to think Israel begins and ends with TA and Jerusalem as if thousands of other cities, towns and vilages don't exist too. Really, how many Americans have heard of Haifa (the third largest city) relative to those who know about TA, considering that Israel is in the news so often? You get the picture.

I also think we shouldn't paint Islam with a broad brush. Sufism for example proves that all Islam isn't negative. There also exists a stripe of a more moderate Islam in some former USSR republics that isn't inundated with negativity as the Middle Eastern types. In the Mideast Islam will eventually have to undergo some sort of reform for it to be more conducive to peaceful coexistence with Kufar.

I’ve just gotten off the phone. My good friend, an architect. Grown man. Shi’ite. Crying. Seeking comfort with a friend not of his sect. And receiving it. He’s here. Safe. His mother is there. In danger. South Lebanon. Under a barrage. Supposedly taking refuge in a ‘Christian’ village with Christian friends. No refuge. Just bombs. Terror. Misery. And unity.

I’ve never seen our people so united. I just came back from a depot for humanitarian aid, organized by a friend of a friend. Within a 24 hour notice period, hundreds of Lebanese responded to the call. Over delivering. As usual. It was full of everything. From laptops to children’s toys. Food. Clothes (all branded of course). We may be displaced, but we’ll never look it. Car after car dropping off items. Offering assistance. I’ve never seen our people so united.

I’ve received news from family in Lebanon about how homes have been opened up for fleeing compatriots. Food is being shared. Love is being shown. And the bombs keep falling.

We take comfort in groups. Every day. Every night. Listening. Talking. Comforting. Planning for our re-emergence. We recount the dark days of our internal conflicts. And we know that those days have disappeared.

I haven’t cried yet. I want to. But I can’t. I take solace in our abilities. In our strength. And I see that our destiny has yet to be realized. But we will realize it, together. As one nation. Under one flag. With a shared history. A deep, rich, glorious history.

Today, Lebanon is united.
Tomorrow will bring challenges. And we are ready.
