Horowitz's bobcats systematically made its way around the 14 acre farm destroying life and property. On June 13, 2006 those who protected our food supply were arrested. While those that destroy our food have the full backing of the state.
2 childern look past the fence at bulldozed farm plots.
bobcat on the righ hand side, destroying the land.
it's a sad day, when a war is declared on plants and the people who tend them and "public" land that belongs to the many is denied for the "rights" of a single "private" landowner. how can the city of LA allow such illogical use of land? how could the greedy, inhumane Horowitz refuse the offer made to purchase the land? this is yet another slap in the face to the people. I hope that whatever concrete and metal hell-hole that Horowitz might put in the garden's place will be boycotted until it too crumbles to the ground.
you will pay for this. we will not forget
Kiss me Blarney Stones, ya PUKE.
Just wanted to send a message of encouragement and many, many thanks to all the activists who continue to defend the south central community farm from death-dealing bulldozers and replacement by corporate warehouses..
The victory is in the telling of the story of committed resistance from a diverse group of activists to the monolithic forces of greed, materialism and destruction, also the message of the community farm will spread and grow into many other communities, towns and cities across the world where it is needed..
There will always be people like Ralph Horowitz who cannot see beyond their short-term profit motive, two of these individuals currently inhabit the highest position of influence in US government (GWbush/Cheney). We cannot understand their motives beyond simple lust for power and greed (far beyond self-preservation), only that people who are committed to justice, human rights and sustainable ecology must always be ready, willing and able to resist those who only care about money..
Looking out into the future, maybe when people debunk the myths of corporate personhood (ability of corporation to own property) and land stewardship, not ownership, becomes the term of the day, maybe then we will witness community farms modeled after southcentral farm springing up around the nation and world after the seeds of resistance begin sprouting. Community farms are the needed response to suburban sprawl, petrochemical pesticide dependency, biotech monoculture, etc...
Finally, depriving people of a functional community farm during the energy crisis is equivalent to genocide. Monoculture agriculture plantations, biotech monocrops, soil erosion from intensive farming and pesticide/herbicide dependency is a one way path to famine. The least fortunate among the population would be the first to die off, this is a form of ethnic cleansing practiced by the capitalist ruling elites. We cannot continue to survive if community farmland is paved over for sprawl development (this isn't the first time this happened). The southcentral community farm is the safety net that needs to be duplicated everywhere to prevent famine and massive population die-off during the peak oil energy crisis..
What we can learn from Cuba;
"Just as Cuba had a sudden energy crisis, so too are we likely to have many crises from energy shocks in the future from wars, hurricanes, terrorism, revolutions, and potential five to eight percent world-wide oil depletion rates. There will also be hiccups in global trade delivery of oil and LNG.
We can get more efficient and sacrifice resources to agriculture, water services, and the trucking industry, but as geological depletion relentlessly continues, as global warming and extreme weather greatly reduce agricultural production, and as the ten high plains states above the Ogallala reservoir run out of water or the energy to pump it up from hundreds of feet down, we will face a food crisis.
We would be better prepared for that if we started programs now to get large numbers of people to go back to the land. There is no way we can continue to have just one percent of the population providing half of the food for the other 99%. (we import the other half: Larry Rohter. Dec 12, 2004. South America Seeks to Fill the World's Table. New York Times).
We should plan an orderly retreat. This would be done by relentlessly cutting back on our energy use more than the depletion rate so that we stay under the energy curve. Universities would shift from industrial and mechanical agricultural research to providing sustainable agriculture outreach to small farms and collectives. However unpleasant this sounds, the alternatives are chaos, starvation, Rwandan-style lowering of the population, the complete loss of Democracy to fascist leaders who will step in to try to regain stability, and the potential invasion of our country by other nations taking advantage of our weakness."

Every spiderweb crack in concrete will provide seeds with access to water. Madre Tierra will prevail over deceitful materialism..
Has anyone contacted the Ethics Commission at City Hall to see if Horowitz contributed to the campaigns of Jan Perry or any other council member(s)?
The Ethics Commission has an office in the underground mall below City Hall East, and I'm told they're pretty helpful.
If a record of this could be found, it would further damn the city council members.
