LOS ANGELES, 21 May 2006--In spite of the obvious provocation, protest organizers agreed in advance that non-violence was the order of the day in confronting the minutemen's march against migrant rights along the now-historic Gran Marcha route.  And so it was, but the protestors' hard-bitten contempt was palpable, and the the shoppers and shopkeepers along Broadway were clear in their resentment.

About ten students had primed the Broadway pedestrians. At 10:30 a.m., they walked through the Sunday shopping crowds of migrants warning them that the minutemen would soon try to take over their street.

The "American Civil Rights March," scheduled for noon, had really begun by 11:15.  At Olympic and Broadway, fifty minutemen from the Minuteman Project, Save Our State, and the Crispus Attucks Brigade were already facing 150 seething, yelling protestors from ISO, Students for Amnesty, the People's Liberation Party, Radical Women, and the RCP, and just plain pissed off anarchists and community members.  The seventy or so visible cops solidified the protestors when, a few moments later, they hauled off a leading pro-migrant activist who had ventured too close to the minutemen.

The minutemen hid behind a line of cop bikes along the south side of Olympic, waving immense US flags and literally wrapped themselves in red, white, and blue stripes.  One sported a classic Torino spoiled with a red, white, and blue flag motif paint job.   Protestors stretched around the north and west around corner.  ANSWER-LA showed up with their banners and signs, and a car battery-powered PA system, complete with speakers on poles, all packed in a shopping cart.  The protestors now numbered two hundred, and the march was ready to begin.  An infamous Mexican minutewoman crossed the parking lot behind the protestors as they shouted, "¡Asesina!"  

One hundred and thirteen minutemen crossed Olympic Boulevard at noon.

The march had been billed as a civil rights march, but the only sign that called for civil rights was the lead banner that read, "Civil Rights in Mexico."  Ted Hayes, chief march organizer and leader of the African-American unit of the minutemen, had managed to pull together about eighteen African-Americans to join him.  Their civil rights issues were notably missing from the march.  Instead of uniting behind African-American rights or jobs, the overwhelmingly European-American minutemen carried signs calling for locking down the borders, no amnesty, and deporting migrants.

By 7th Street the cops had donned their hardhats, visors up.  The cops spaced themselves about five feet apart, facing the protestors on the west sidewalk, who shouted to the marchers "La lucha obrera no tiene fronteras" and, to the cops, "La migra, la policía--la misa porquería!" through their bullhorns.

PLP had gone ahead, handing out flyers denouncing the march, and all along Broadway on both sides of the street people stopped their Sunday shopping to come out on the sidewalk to glare with arms crossed at the minutemen, or to join protestors.  Undoubtedly, many of these same people had carried their own U.S. flags up this same street two months ago.  Today, they saw that flag in a different light.  Overhead, the sky was sullen and gloomy, threatening but not delivering rain.  The sidewalks were jammed, the din was throbbing. Then at 4th Street, a  pause.  The minutemen could be heard chanting, "U-S-A!  U-S-A!"  But the protestors quickly countered with "Working people have not nations--Smash racist deportations!"  

One demonstrator said of Ted Hayes leading the minutemen, "Imagine a Chicano Republican leading the Klan in a march down Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard."

At 1:00 p.m. the march had reached City Hall.  The protestors, now up to 250, were forced by the cops onto the west side of Spring Street north of 1st Street, while the minutemen paraded to the City Hall lawn for their rally.  But wait!  First one minutewoman, then another, then several more minutepeople came back to the east side of Spring St. and chatted with the cops.  It seemed they wanted to use their porta-potties across the street, in the middle of the protestors.  The minutepeople stepped into the street.  More consultation with the police, then some fussing.  Then the minutepeople turned back, defeated.  No porta-potties for them.

The protestors chanted for an hour longer until shortly after 2:00 p.m.  The police had called for reinforcements and, recognizing the the danger to the migrants' rights movement, most of the protestors marched out 1st Street toward Broadway.

Meanwhile, the Minutemen were listlessly shuffling around as three hours of speakers took their turns on the City Hall steps.  A string of political wannabes skirted the question of immigration, only touching on matricular consular identification cards and denouncing international trade agreements.  A Republican Presidential candidate was stumping for rights for non-custodial parents.  An African-American minister called out, "Where are our Black leaders?" and answered himself: "They're conspicuously absent today."

Then a march organizer, who had carried what appeared to be a Celtic cross in the march, came to the microphone.  "The police are on our side," she told the group at the steps.  "When I was marching, I got emotional.  I started crying."  Then, intoning Martin Luther King, Jr., she went on, "It's a dream to secure our border.  It's a dream to remove all illegals without rewarding them.  It's a dream that our children will have the same patriotic future we had."  After denouncing migrants as the source of crime, homelessness, and hospital closures, she urged the crowd to vote, to call their congressional representatives, and to join the minutemen to "stop the illegal invasion."  "Congress is considering allowing illegals to vote," she claimed.

"You need to pray," she continued.  "I'm amazed that the Christian churches are not here.  In the Bible, it says, 'Thou shall not steal, thou shall not covet.'  In Nehemiah, God built a wall.  God bless America!"

Finally, Jim Gilchrist, organizer of the Minuteman Project, took the stairs and the microphone.  First, he denounced "Mayor Villareconquista" and the Los Angeles City Council.  He claimed that for the past forty years, political correctness had advanced diversity and multiculturalism "at any cost."  "Assimilation and Americanism have been lost," he proclaimed.  "The Senate will ram down your throats and your children's throats amnesty for the 30 million illegal aliens. . . . By the year 2050  there will be 150 million illegal aliens, more illegal aliens than the number of registered voters."  "Anarchists have no relation to our nation," he pronounced.  "They're part of foreign enclaves.  They have no respect for English or U.S. history.  They're not interested in assimilating, they're interested in taking our our country."  He referred to a protestor across the street: "That loudmouth over there has the aggregate IQ of a dead housewife."

The protestor on the bullhorn was arrested a few minutes later.  When the minutemen returned from watching the arrest, Gilchrist announced, "One down, 29,999 left.  Sí se puede.  U-S-A!  U-S-A!"

On their way out, the police escorted the minutemen to the porta-potties, past the handful of remaining counterprotestors.

After the minutemen rally at City Hall broke up around 3:55 p.m., the racists marched all the way BACK down Broadway to Olympic under continued heavy police protection.

This march went a lot quicker than the march up Broadway did, but it was just as lively.

During the march back, the racists were down to about 60 people, and there were only about 20 of us left to counter them; but we had enough heart and desire to make enough noise for 200 people. The cops even treated us like we were much bigger than we actually were.

The cops lined both sides of the street with 20 SQUAD CARS surrounding the minutemen all the way back down Broadway to Olympic. We protested the racists/fascists from both sides of the street, shouting at them, waving whatever signs and banners we had and overall just getting into their heads.

LAPD continued to protect the racists even as they retreated to their cars by blocking off the big parking lot south of Olympic.

Huge props to all the courageous comrades who remained throughout the day.

Shame on ANSWER. Shame on ISO. Shame on all the "socialist" organizations and their "leaders" who left the battle while the enemy was still in the field.

What no one is saying about this march is how much it sucked on our side.

The sudden presence of the RCP and PLP - who've been NOWHERE NEAR this struggle over the last year-plus, when put together with the presence of ANSWER and the ISO (who have in fact been stalwarts and largely decent allies throughout this period) gave the counter-protest an overwhelmingly Marxist character that was - worst of all, grim and BORING.

Not that anything and everything these groups have to say is wrong - nothing like that - some of their stuff is very good, some of their analysis is very revolutionary in character, well at least in the case of the RCP - agree with me or not, whatever.

I'm talking about the SPIRIT - which was absent. Or negative, a kind of dull routine anger at oppression in the abstract.

Anger was of course called for, but this lacked focus was little but habitual.

MISSING - or muffled in the sea of red flags the RCP handed out to "divert" the demo - was the spirit of the migrants themselves, and the charactar of fresh hope, determination and fierceness that can only come with the knowledge that one's own people are on the line, that our people's lives are for real and personally at stake.

It really amazes me sometimes to see that these groups, for all their talk about "speaking the language of the masses" etc, seem not to have a CLUE about the real spirit of the Brown or Black or Native struggles or how people respond to and feel about them.

The little sea of red flags Sunday was as phony as the sea of US flags in the mass marches. I kinda hate to say it, but we were just as Europeanized out of existence by the red flag as we were by the red white and blue.

I think that it is scary to see the minute MENSOS being protected by the LApigD. I would like to know how many of the LAPigD's are also minute menSOS in thier vacation time/off duty time. I read somewhere the many of the wannabe vigilante Minute Mensos were former police agents and or had ties with them at some point. This should be checked out because as I recall the same LApigD was the cause for a little incident that occured on April 29th 1992-Florence and Normandie...the cops are not there to protect and to serve "immigrants" nor "activist". Furthermore, I think that the LAPigD has done much more devestating damage to our communities before the minute menSOS came on the scene...Although the protests against the minute mensos need to continue...don't forget that the LAPigD are the inner-city minute Mensos paid by the hour.

Well in your opinion, should they have not protected the marchers on Sunday. I was one of them. Believe me, we needed it. The counter-protesters, who are our best advertisement, were a pack of frothing dogs. Given the opportunity, they'd have gang rushed us. Think about it. You're trying to convince people that illegal aliens aren't that bad and should be allowed to stay in the country. And to that end you behaved like a violent mob? Where is your common sense?

The progressive movement (of which I am, it must be said, a member) has simply been overtaken and overwhelmed by what is happening in the immigrant community.

Let me confess that I myself missed the first mass demonstration due to simple inattention regarding what was going on. Can there be any other explanation for this kind of blindness than what can at best be called race and class introvertedness? Even when I finally roused myself to join the May 1st manifestation, there wasn't one face in 100 that was Anglo. So I am not the only idiot who has persisted too long in seeing this new movement as something "out there."

What the various groups that you mention (RCP, PLP, ANSWER, ISO, etc.) are all struggling with (or should be) is the question of what is the proper role of a race or class-privileged person (and group thereof) in supporting a movement that represents the interests of, and is led by, an underclass that is fighting a desperate struggle for its very survival?

Although these Minuteman demonstration / counter-demonstrations may seem almost comically small when compared to the mass immigrant-led demonstrations against HR 4437, they also provide one possible answer to the above question. And that answer would be that the elite, largely white, community needs to clean up its own act, since it is largely responsible for the problems faced by undocumented workers. And so it may be a very proper activity for members of the privileged progressive left to focus on opposing the nascent fascism that is developing within their own community.

Naturally, the character of such actions, inasmuch as they represent a dialogue within the privileged community, will be different from the character of direct actions led by immigrants and their families who are fighting against direct attacks upon their freedom and livelihoods. And it is that character that your post seems to be lamenting. But perhaps, for the reasons cited above, it is natural for there to be such differences in the character of this struggle as compared with the direct actions against HR 4437.

If you want to read violence, go to the SOS board. They're often talking about getting into fights.

The thing is, the three most violent events at these demos/counter-demos were perpetrated by the SOS/MMP side.

1. some WS dude pulls a knife (gets arrested)

2. Hal Netkin drives his van into a crowd, hitting several counter-demos, two of them head-on. (Netkin is arrested, but cops drop charges.)

3. some dude (SS187?) and Ted Hayes perpetrate a coordinated assault on an immigration activist.

On the counter side, a plastic bottle was thrown, hitting a woman, at the first demo.

So far, the score is 3 to 1, tthe SOS leading in violence.

Also, the SOS wins bonus violence points for having coordinated attacks, claming to carry weapons during demos, using vehicles as weapons, and "pulling a knife."

The counters should be given credit for their restraint, especially because the counters consistently outnumber the SOS/MMP/CCIR side to the point where, if they wanted, they could inflict injury. Instead, they have reduced the amount of violence since the demonstration in Baldwin Park.

Instead of physical assaults and threats of armed assaults, the counter-demos use their voices to intmidate. It's rude, and uncouth, but, it's not like they're coordinating assaults on people. They don't even coordinate their formations.

Both sides are working class, populists, but one is on the left (socialist), and the other is on the right (fascist).

One side likes red flags, gold and red stars, and "the Communist Manifesto" (or at least parts of Das Kapital).

The other side likes other things.

But on a more serious note, here's footage from their recent rally in Irvine, CA. Judge for yourself. It's not related to the march this article reports on, but is related in terms of their behavior and how they react to certain elements like Confederate flags in their rallies.

Here's the video of Advocate. For anyone who doesn't know who he is, no I didn't confront some random old guy at the rally. People who post here know who he is. And he actually confirms this on video when I told him I saw his posts on Stormfront and he asked me "did you read my posts?"

I went around trying to ask the rally participants and Minuteman people what they thought of a Stormfront guy being there. But many of them didn't seem to know exactly what Stormfront is and I'm sure many of them really didn't know. And the camera work was rather shaky because I was speaking and holding the camera at the same time. It would be nice if I had another person to do the camera work.

It shows how careless the Minutemen and those who rally when them are in who and what shows up at their rallies. I know that many of them really want to be nonracist, but don't really know who is leading the rallies and what's going on beyond what they see and understand.

Remember, on Sept. 24th 2005, Debbie Sattler told me in person to my face that Joe Turner of SOS invited the Nazis to his rallies.

And one of the people who rallied with those Nazis in Laguna Beach in July of last year did campaign work in the Gilchrist offices. I tried to find out how and why and got KICKED OUT. Go figure.

OMG I was once gonna recall an incident on here but didn't get around to. It was in Lake Forest, a day when Naui was also there. The MM/SOS were doing the usual protesting against day labor pick ups.

There were nails planted under the tires of some of the MM/SOS. This guy comes up to me and gives me a really firm handshake and said one of them called him over to help or something. He thought I was one of the SOS/MM at that point. He said that he was a member of the Lake Forest Hells Angels or something. I wish I got that on tape somehow. He said that he was called over to help, although I'm not sure in what way.

Anyways, he found out I had a "Let Them Work" sign and proceeded to get profane at me in a loud voice. I caught a bit of it on tape when he drove off in his truck. Just a bit of footage, hardly any.

Yes, Advocate was at their first Mira Loma rally at the high school recently. And at the Irvine one where I got some video footage.

I have all the footage from when I first broke away from the Minutemen when I disagreed with disrupting day labor and discovered a white nationalist in the Gilchrist campaign. From November til current, all the footage is in a safe place and always will be.

As for making an archive, it depends on how it's done. I have all the footage I ever made with my camcorder and always will. I could make a website to host the footage. But it depends on how much attention I would allow to be brought to me. And how much I can organize things. One of the reasons why I delayed posting some footage of the Irvine rally is kinda lack of organization in many aspects of my daily life currently, as well as some procrastination because of that. We all go through that. That's also why my camcorder kept dying. I didn't get around to keeping them fresh, otherwise I would have gotten more footage. So I apologize for that. But next time I go to a Minuteman/SOS rally and get some of them to talk to me about things(which is really easy to do), I'll be more prompt on presenting footage.

Also on the third footage I posted, the guy was talking about what specifically the Stormfront/Nazi persons were doing at a Laguna Beach rally. That may help fit another piece or more in this and call for more questions like "why did you have them involved in the first place?"

And in that footage, it looks like I was having the guy share screen space with a sign with a leasing phone number. That wasn't intentional at all. I was at first trying to get his face talking with the rally in the background, which I like to do. Then I kinda tried to keep doing that, while looking right at him or something rather than the camera itself. The sign with the leasing number isn't relevant to what the guy was saying. Just some random sign by the sidewalk.

Why my camcorder batteries kept dying, not the camcorder itself. The camcorder is doing just fine, even after Advocate poked at it with his flag pole LOL.

I'm not sure if a Confederate flag on a shirt is a clear indication of certain things, although there was a rally when one of them had it on a marker board. So that was very intentional. Still, they've gotta know that use or display of the Confederate flag will be criticized. So wouldn't it take hardly any effort in not wearing anything that displays it? I know that Debbie still rallies with the likes of Don Silva and others from SOS. Not sure why though. Back in September, she was pretty vicious towards SOS in her words. Although there was talk later on about how they may clean up. Maybe even get a name change.

However my suggestion for anyone taking on that side of the issue is to forget the whole Minuteman/SOS thing. Just wait until they're tired out and moved aside and work with more reasonable people. SOS especially is a total joke.

Debbie has it tough already by being very active in this issue in her home city, which probably isn't wise. Doing anything to her or her property won't achieve anything for anyone so I suggest no fowl play or pranks. If there's some evil minded racist with alterior motives and thoughts behind the organized efforts, I assure you it's not her. Just leave her alone.

And no I'm not defending the Minuteman point of views or going back and forth like some anonymous people(probably from the MM/SOS side, I can guess who) have come here to suggest. I observe and learn. I don't have the insight to decide on the whole picture of this issue. Infact I don't have as much emotional attachment to any aspect of the issue anymore(besides regard for human life in general, that never changes). And part of that is because I'll be moving out of the USA and my thoughts will and should be on where I'll be living at that time. It's been kinda fun and kinda crappy living here in CA. Fun, but don't expect me to die for this place. Kiss my ass Bush, I'm outta here soon.

I have seen things on the SOS/Gilchrist side that are afowl, indicating that some of the accusations on here and from their opponents seem to be valid(those who are knowledged in this, and not just repeating catch phrases at rallies). What I do is bring a little fair balance. I'm finding out more and more and when I see people on the SOS/MM side lie about me or anything I've seen, I'm gonna set the record straight to make the playing field more fair. They can't expect someone like me to see the things I've seen and keep quiet about it.

I didn't mean to sound emo there and I'm not anti-American. And Bush is an enemy to Americans and humanity. I'm just moving on to bigger and better things.
