Well maybe one of the reasons is because they don't feel a connection to the US and its flag because of people like you Don. They're gonna be here for while. You want to show them how great the US is? How about being a little more inviting. At least let them work in peace while they await their fates, whether it's amnesty or deportation.

Senators don't count the people at demos as voters unless they make an effort to look like voters. Kids generally aren't considered voters. Neither are immigrants. So a crowd of 1000 people might be considered, what, maybe 500 votes?
Flip it around, and every letter to a Senator is measured as 5 to 10 votes. So if every demonstrating student who cannot bother to write a short note to Boxer and Feinstein, all those miles of walking won't be counted toward voting against the bill.
Do the math. 50 to 100 minute-men writing letters can compete against 1000 students. The only way to beat these numbers is to change the politicians' perceptions, and provide visible evidence of converting political energy into votes and organization.

I think they're being rebellious with the flag waving.
They know it pisses some people off.
They're still caught up in the logic of flags, which is warlike, twisted and inhuman. It's the logic of America versus Mexico. Mexico versus whomever.
It's kind of like, in the 80s, people wore crosses as fashion, and it pissed off some Christians. The people being "offensive" were still caught up in the logic of church iconography.
