March 18, Call for an Anarchist Contingent in Hollywood

by a Thursday, Mar. 16, 2006 at 5:11 PM

This March 18th demonstration, we wish to take an otherwise passive protest, and make it into a participatory event, with varying actions people can engage in.

March 18, Call for an Anarchist Contingent in Hollywood
12 noon, Hollywood and Vine

Across the globe the United States colonial machine has raped innumerable lands and cultures to pursue its ever-expanding imperialist policies. Displaced people flee their lands in search of better lives in the first world, but upon arrival find themselves once again trapped under the system that on one front, bombs lands and murders the innocent, and on another economically enslaves billions of us, while we are forced to bow to our landlords, bosses, and politicians.

As we ascend upon three years of occupation in Iraq, it becomes more evident to all Americans that not only have we been manipulated into war, but that our entire social structure is failing, and it is time for an international movement to rise up and begin to build a new world, whilst struggling against the old.

March 18th, 2006 we call on all those who oppose war, capitalism and the state to join us in a revolutionary anarchist contingent. We will march arm-in-arm and in solidarity with the Youth Justice Coalition (YJC), an organization made up of young people directly affected by California’s prison industrial complex. The California Youth Authority and the greater Prison Industrial Complex are just constant reminders of the war on the poor that the state wages on us each and every day, and we believe it is crucial to march with the YJC and their families who are some of the first casualties of this war on the poor. We welcome all families, students, and workers as well as all those interested in learning more about anarchism to march with us. Look for the red and black flags, and join us!

This March 18th demonstration, we wish to take an otherwise passive protest, and make it into a participatory event, with varying actions people can engage in. We will be involved in the following,

-Contingent against Imperialist War, Capitalism, and Authoritarianism, in all forms.

-The Anti War Strategizing Discussion. We believe it is crucial to strategize and graph the possibilities of resistance living under what is becoming more and more of a fascistic state.

-Literature distribution. We can no longer rely on conventional methods of organizing or education, and must promote alternatives to the corporate and state’s monopoly on education and propaganda.

-Other activities for all those attending the demonstration.

What to Bring: Banners, Flags, Anti Authoritarian Literature, Water, and Everyone you know.

Note: This is a call for a non-black bloc anarchist contingent for the March 18th ANSWER demonstration in Hollywood. We do not wish to be a confrontational element at this march, for we do not believe that our regional movement has reached the point where we can be successful in that arena. Our goal at this march is to be educational and accessible. As anarchists we recognize that we cannot directly change the mechanisms of our current system through legal permitted marches alone, but we do believe that our presence at such marches are a vital way of recruiting, educating, and networking with others that may share similar values. This, in turn, will help us grow to the critical point in which we can be effective in forms of protest that go beyond the legal boundaries outlined by the state. We must think tactically and act accordingly.

From the war abroad to the war at home, social injustice is all around us. It is time to build great walls of resistance and STOP THIS WAR.

Yes, be passive, non-violent

by BR Friday, Mar. 17, 2006 at 4:12 AM

CALIFORNIA CODES
PENAL CODE
SECTION 182-185

(185.) Section One Hundred and Eighty-five. It shall be unlawful
for any person to wear any mask, false whiskers, or any personal disguise (whether complete or partial) for the purpose of:
One--Evading or escaping discovery, recognition, or identification in the commission of any public offense.
Two--Concealment, flight, or escape, when charged with, arrested for, or convicted of, any public offense. Any person violating any of the provisions of this section shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor.

---

So be watchful, for instigators, who infiltrate your group. If anyone starts damaging property, and looting, or other violence, then seize them, and do a citizens arrest, else the cops (yes the man, the state), will take action against the mob, of masked people, as a whole.

That would really make the youth of America look bad, and you don't want to do that, to a whole generation.

To all the AnswerLA, anarchists, out there, I look forward to your participation at a future SaveOurState rally at a Home Depot store.

Lawful Solidarity

by 1planet1people Friday, Mar. 17, 2006 at 9:00 AM

The courts have ruled that wearing a mask in solidarity with the EZLN is a protected free speech. It is all in intent, so when asked, just say the right thing. Also, One does not need to "arrest" provocateurs (and doing so may be considered assaulting a police officer). Simply walk away, and if you disagree, don't participate.

On the wearing of masks at public demonstrations.

by Your right to protest, use it or lose it Friday, Mar. 17, 2006 at 10:08 AM

On the wearing of masks at public demonstrations.

The masks function in a number of ways and are worn for different reasons by individuals.
This is a short list of some of the more common reasons masks are worn:

1. To hide identity. Why? There are many reasons for this. It may be to protect civil rights that might be violated by local police, FBI, DIA and other government agencies doing surveillance. To guard against employers who may not approve of the protesters political views and fire them. The very real fear of police recognizing you at another place in the future and giving you a hard time or worse: arresting, beating or killing you.
2. To display colors of solidarity with your fellow activists.
3. To signal a militant stance against the policy or institution being protested.
4. To protect from inhaling tear gas.
5. To affirm commitment to a political movement such as Anarchism or Revolutionary Marxism.
6. To display the fashion of a sub-culture. The power of seductive imagery to induce receptivity to one’s political message.
7. To engage in criminal activity and avoid arrest. Most often vandalism of property owned by or seen has a symbol of the corporation or institution being protested.

This last reason is the one that most people outside the movement think of and the one that most concerns law enforcement. The association most uninformed people make is the masked bandit of the wild west. The cartoon image of: a person wearing a mask equals an outlaw.

Also there are a wide variety of masks that can be worn, each with its own character and meaning. Consider the difference between a black bandana and a clown mask. Also consider the public and police associations with the two and their potential reactions. Masks can function in a number of ways.

By the way masks are illegal in some US cities. New York for example has a law against it in groups of three or more. So street activists in Los Angeles should not let their right to mask up go unused.

1. It's not illegal to wear a mask.
2. Commiting a crime is commiting a crime, masked or not.
3. Since when do anarchists care about State Laws?
