Unveiling the Danish Cartoons: A Discussion of Free Speech and World Response
Misc Event on Friday, March 10, 2006 (7:00pm - 10:00pm)
UCLA Campus: Dodd 147
The Danish cartoons depicting Mohammed have sparked a worldwide controversy. Death threats and violent protests have sent the cartoonists into hiding and have had the intended effect of stifling freedom of expression. The reaction to these cartoons raises urgent questions whose significance goes far beyond a set of drawings.
* What is freedom of speech? Does it include the right to offend?
* What is the significance of the worldwide Islamic reaction to the cartoons?
* How should Western governments have responded to this incident?
* How should the Western media have responded?
These and related issues will be discussed by panelists from different backgrounds and perspectives. A questions-and-answers period with the audience will be included.
Please note that the cartoons in question will be displayed at the event. Respect for the discussion forum will be strictly enforced.
Confirmed panelists include Dr. Yaron Brook (Executive Director of the Ayn Rand Institute) and Kevin James (KABC radio talk-show host, former federal prosecutor and entertainment lawyer). Additional panelists, especially those offering opposing views, are still being sought out.
Priority seating for UCLA students, faculty, and staff begins at 6:30pm. A BruinCard is required for admittance.
General seating is available only by RSVP and begins at 6:45pm. Please email
Events@ClubLogic.org to be placed on the list. (Expect a confirmation within 24 hours.) Because seating is limited, being on the RSVP list is not a guarantee of entry. A state- or federally-issued ID is required for admittance.
If necessary, a waiting area will be available outside the room in case space opens up.
Members of the media--please email Arthur Lechtholz-Zey at
Arthur@ClubLogic.org to make arrangements.
in the 1990's half a million Iraqui children died due to the US embargo and economic sanctions.
We invaded a Musulim Country, Iraq, without any legitimate reasons. There was no WMD in Iraq, or connection to 911, or even any uranium connection in Niger.
Nonetheless we invade this musulim country, killing over 100, 000 people, mostly civilians and Musulims, and inflict a terrible psychological blow on the whole population of Iraq and beyond ( It was found recently that 90% of the population of bagdad have psychological problems due to the war).
So to summarize, we kill and torture Musulims, and inflict a great psychological blow to the survivor in Iraq and around, and then we are surprise that Musulims "are not so ratioanal" when it comes to free speech. WOW!
This is preposterous to have a meeting about free speech in that context. What are those UCLA students want to achieve with this event?
In the list of panelists, I don't any see any speakers who might say something about the US attack on the Musulims word and the relation with the issue that people have about free speech. I guess the context is irrelevant. Is it?
The people putting this show on are the enemies of free speech:
The Ayn Rand institute and KABC. And take a look at the web site of campus group that is promoting this:
http://ucla.ClubLogic.org/home/ What they espouse is an extremely anti-social, neo-fascist philosophy.
Rand interprets Nietzsche similar to the way Hitler did, but she concludes it is the corporations and not the state that deserve absolute power.
See:
http://www.aynrand.org But never mind, I bet the students could care less about this event. This a corp-gov sponsored propaganda tour that goes around the country to looking for victims to program.
A protest of this event would be good to see.
I just got a a reply from ANSWER LA. They will be trying to contact students on the campus to possibly stage a protest at this event.
Check their website in the next few days:
