LA-IMC reposts and copyright law

by LA-IMC Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006 at 6:51 PM

For information only:

Users who post articles and comments to the LA-IMC newswire are responsible for adherence to copyright law. With open publishing those who post articles assume the risk of copyright infringement. LA-IMC is not responsible for the content of articles posted to the site and is not required to provide clearance for reposted material. That responsibility rests solely with the user.

Articles that come to the attention of the staff and deemed to be a copyright infringement will be deleted. Reposting a part of copyrighted work within an article and citing the source or providing a link is considered fair use and is legal. Reposting an article in its entirety and not crediting the author is a copyright violation committed by the person posting.

Reposting done correctly is, for the most part allowed, but it is really not part of the IMC ethic. Users are encouraged to post their own original stories or essays. That’s why it’s called Indymedia. :-) All posted work is automatically copyright protected by law and the author retains all rights. If you want to be formal about it include the (c) symbol, the year and your name in your article. Many activists want to share their work freely and grant non-commercial public use. Please see copyright & legal info for more detailed information. )

providing a link is considered fair use and is legal.

Posting articles from other websites as long as it is providing a link is considered fair use and is legal.

Okay, ... that isn't hard to understand.

But given that your readership is so small, ...does it really matter?

Why shouldn't this site double as a collective?

Why shouldn't this site double as a collective?

Individuals make the collective.

Each must accept personal responsibility for their actions, and shield the collective from attack, else the collective will be forever defending itstelf against attacks.
