As the anti-war movement struggles to reach more people with its message, some believe they may have found a new tactic: The Bicycle.
Long time critics of permit marches may be encouraged by this idea. Amongst anti-war activists there has been a long running debate on the visibility and effectiveness of permit marches. Some say the permit is needed to help create a safe space in which to protest. Others contend that the closure of streets surrounding the march isolates the demonstrators from the public they are trying reach. The answer to all this may be as simple as just attaching a sign to your bike and going for a ride.
Uploaded is an mp3 file of two interviews with some of the proponents of the No War Bike Ride idea. A No War Bike Ride is planned for Sunday, February 19th in Hollywood. See the link for details Valentine Day Peace and Love No War Bike Ride
Suppose on a significant work day, such as anniversary of the start of Iraq war, Monday March 20 every anti-war activist drove a car or rode a bike on streets and freeways entering downtown Los Angels and every other major U. S. city, causing grid lock so that everyone working there was an hour or so late for work. A comminunique is released later that the grid lock was a protest to business-as-usual while the slaughter in Iraq continues another year.
That would be a message.
Would driving a car be a good way to protest the crimes of the oil men in power?
The money from gas you buy would be going to the bush regimes' friends, while you put global warming gases into the air.
I would suggest a bike protest, general strike or tax revolt.
Or, protest naked to show your desperation and determination, and show the world you have nothing to lose and nothing to hide.
