There was a strong antiwar presence and a good response from the community at the MLK day parade in Los Angeles.

While a contingent of anti-police-brutality marchers passed by the reviewing stand, the commentators for Channel 4 were audibly nervous and ignored them as long as they could. When the group passed directly in front of the cameras and could no longer be plausibly ignored, they mumbled something about the right to express opinions being what makes this country great, etc. etc.; and you could hear the relief in their voices when the anti-brutality and anti-execution marchers were followed by a middle school band.
I had to switch off the boob tube and leave the house shortly after that (and I didn't see the coverage all the way from the beginning of the parade), so I didn't see everything. Does anybody know whether the IVAW / VFP / ANSWER / anti-authoritarian contingents got any media coverage, and whether any of the TV commentators had heart attacks as they passed by? Just curious...

based on these pictures, everyone participating in any of the leftist contingents (besides unions) were white, and middle class looking. How pathetic, we go to an MLK parade as white people, to what, "teach" the people of color? To 'enlighten' them? I'm disappointed that this is how it looks on the TV. White liberals, using MLK as an excuse to front there protest groups (I'm looking at you ANSWER).

The issue of diversity in the Anti-war Movement is an old one. The person making the comment should not be so negative about it. ANSWER is an acronym for “Act Now to Stop War and End Racism” they are aware of the issue.
There are a number of factors that contribute to the lack of diversity in the anti-war movement. But the main one is that the war in Iraq is just not the top issue. Poverty, crime, drugs, healthcare, unemployment, housing, police shootings put the war in Iraq way down on the list of things to worry about. We got a war here every day with the LAPD. We live under occupation right now. Look at New Orleans.
Another reason is that white folk can go out and protest things they don’t like without much risk. But do you what would happen if an all black crowd were to go protest some where in this city? The LAPD would attack them and people would be hurt or worse. People know this so they stay home.
You don’t have to agree with the hard left and their politics, but you should be glad that some one carves out some public space where people can protest in relative safety because no one else seems to be doing it. Perhaps ANSWER should consider somewhere other than Hollywood or Downtown for their events if they want to better address the issue of diversity.

My point was that these liberal protest groups isolate themselves, and something like this proves it, whereas the unions are made up of many different people. We need more working class organizing, not feel good liberal politics.

I could have sworn there was a comment here, asking what King would have thought of the character of Collaborators riding the coat-tails of his message.

there probably was more "white" antiwar supporters in the march, but I saw a couple of asian, several blacks, and there several of us chicanos in the MLK anti war march
y perpetuate the issue of white v. black racism, that wasn't the case at this MLK march, you would know that if you looked closer at the pictures or if you'd particpated in the mlk celebrations in LA that day
plus, the guy holding with the Minute Man = Racism sign was born in central Mexico; he is "white" in skin color (whatever that heck means) but hes Mexican.
its way to ez to make judgments on a few pictures and by judging people by color, please don't do that

thanx for the pics and the true patriots, marching with coffins, how perverted to have military, rotc, and hummers in a DR. KING PARADE.

People like Tuesday (probably a SOS/MM) are always trying to reinforce the racial divides and promotes racism. Frankly, there weren’t whites there, there weren't blacks there, there wasn't Asians there, and there weren't high class, middle class, or the working class. There were only people, a whole hell of a lot of them. Unlike you, there were people making a stand. But you can be proud of yourself, you kept you couch warm with your behind, probably even drank a beer or two, and did nothing to contribute to the world. When you die, I am sure the world is really going to care.

firstly, my name wasn't "tuesday," it was "a." Just because I am calling out liberals for their white privilege politics doesn't make me SOS or a MM (though that is a quick and easy way to blow off what I'm saying and ignoring my point). If you can't examine the faults of your movement, then you will never build or grow into anything that is at all a threat to the institutions that you oppose. If you don't want to hear/read about white privilege, then you have a lot to learn. Get with it, your cliche leftist politics aren't changing shit...which means its time to examine what it is we are doing here.....
