Speaking at an Oxford University business school forum, Craig Newmark said his news project will be introduced within three months. He made it clear his new Web site will have a bottom-up approach to news stories and presentation, with readers play the role of editors. "Things do need to change," he told the audience in Oxford, England, The Guardian reported. "The big issue in the U.S. is that newspapers are afraid to talk truth to power. The White House press corps don't speak the truth ... they are frightened to lose access they don't have anyway." Newmark said his news project will involve Web technology to let readers decide which news stories are the most important. At least one Web site is already working this field. Digg.com invites readers to submit stories to be posted on its Web site. "Once a story receives enough (votes) from (the site's visitors) it will be promoted to the front page," the site explains.=20

Just wondering - do readers here want classified ads?

I don't know if that's a good idea, johnk. I see the possibility for endless spam and denigration from our 'friends' to ridicule this forum. You mean like : Men looking for women women looking for men etc etc. ? What kind of classified adds are you thinking about? And why do we need them for a newswire?

Oh, hot damn diggety...Craigslist, home of the phony job ads posted by recruiters, home of the dumbassess offering designers $100 to design their companies' "corporate identity" campaigns, home of the personal ads full of flakes and fakes and the ever-ubiquitous "Craigslist Whores", is getting into _news_?
Hell, if the fact-checking and QC at Craigslist News is anything like Wikipedia*, we're all in huge trouble.
*Wikipedia, for all your Star Trek trivia needs.

I brought the issue up a few years ago, and some folks were baffled, and others thought they were talking about personals. I was thinking of people advertising free stuff they're giving away, or, maybe stuff they're selling or crafts they're selling. I guess personals too.
Maybe not. Maybe this idea is played out.

I guess Mike's got a point. I thought the ranters on here were nuts, but Craigslist is a whole other level of insane. I try to filter out the bad and see the good side of it. It's helped me earn some of my living gettling odd gigs here and there.

by I want IMC to grow
Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005 at 6:14 PM
Most IMCs are operated on a shoe string budget and depend on unpaid volunteers, fundraisers and grants to keep going. Maybe it should stay that way but I don’t see how the network can hope to expand and reach more people without more money. Some kind of revenue stream that does not compromise the anti-capitalist stance of the IMC network may be the way to help IMC grow. Classifieds or co-opt adverts with allies of IMC might be a way to achieve this without violating the IMC mission statement.
There are many examples of good independent media outlets that do have ads. The ads are typically for locally owned, non-corporate folks who own some shop in the community. Often they provide products or services that are part of the culture of the global justice movement. An ad for a sale at 33-1/3 Books for example or the planned opening of Sandpaper Books in the old Flor y Canto space would not conflict with the IMC mission.

I don't think john was talking about charging for ads, and I don't think IMC should. that would defeat the purpose of providing a free venue for exchange.
second: I don't know about sexy or romantic personals ads, but I've always thought it would be cool to provide a venue for ads about stuff for sale, barter fairs, potluck exchanges, activities, and something I've always wanted: roommate and rental ads. I've dried my eyeballs out looking at craigslist rental ads and being "interviewed" by little powermongers trying to find a place to live and it sucks! it's all a bunch of little hipster jerks who pull power trips on people looking to rent a room etc. I've always wished there was some venue for more "progressive" leftist types looking for roommates and stuff like that. ideally, the leftist community would be so tight and integrated that we wouldn't need something like this, we'd already have networks in place. unfortunately, this is LA, and I think we could use something like this.
as for the sexy personals and stuff, I don't know. whatever. I somehow don't envision too many leftists hooking up for casual encounters. the left is a little too Puritanical for that kind of stuff. maybe if you had an ascetic, self-flaggelation category or something. but it's fun to imagine what leftist romantic ads would look like. we'd have to have our own set of abbreviations: V=vegetarian, VN=vegan, A=anarchist, PV=party vanguardist, BAA=born-again aztec, BBKP=black bloc krusty punk...

People are into that personals idea. Maybe that's something to pursue. I'm mostly inspired by the old penpal ads in Flipside and MRR. That was like personals, but, kind of different. People did meet up through them, though.
Another idea that's got some legs is to add birth, death, and marriage announcements to the site. So people can put those important events into some public place, and memorialize their friends.

dude, that's a great idea about the announcements! I like it a lot. & I was just joking about the personals, I think it'd be i-ight and fun to look at. the only thing is, it doesn't take long to get to know most people in the movement around here, so I think probly a lot of us would be looking at ads trying to guess who it is. hey how about "missed encounters"? "9/24 anti-war march. I was the one wearing black, holding protest sign. So were you. You said something to me but I couldn't hear you over the chanting. second chance at the next rally?"

Also, the roomates idea's good too.
Someone told me about Leftists Lounges in Boston and Oakland. Maybe we need one here. It's just a regular nightclub, but with an atmosphere that would drive away right-wingers.
