I have been the victim of a gay-hate crime but I believe it was because the partner I was with, is butch. Otherwise, I believe I would have been read as a straight girl. As gender savvy as I would like to think I am, I can only try to understand what trans people go through. Gender fluidity is important to me, not only as a SOFFA, but also because as a femme, I am sometimes not seen as valid in the 'lesbian' community. But, this isn't about me. This is about a 22 y.o. transperson who was abducted by 4 men and later her burned body was tossed from a car. That is the person I stood up for at MCC during DOR. It is about all transphoic hate crimes. It is horrific, bewildering, staggering, sickening, sad, enraging...
Valerie spoke of the road rage she could have experienced on the way to MCC. She was kind enough, even with the throngs of people I imagine were going to line up to speak with her, to spend time with me after the Service to discuss how to just STOP myself from the dis-stress I am capable of on the road. I can verbally go for the jugular and try to hit on every Achilles Heel a total stranger has, just because they cut me off. I can STOP that negative behavior. But HOW can I stop the feelings of an eye for and eye after hearing those stories, hearing about the panic defense mode? I don't see myself as a vigilante, so I see that what I must do with those feelings is channel them into making a difference, in any way I can. TODAY WEST HOLLYWOOD, TOMORROW THE WORLD!
