"Even though dry land routes exist leading out of the city, emergency officials continued to prevent able-bodied storm victims from trying to walk across the Crescent City Bridge, citing the dangers they said would be posed by an uncontrolled exit from the city."

My national government is my enemy.
The more I think about it, the less decided I am. On the one hand, the incompetence, greed, and favoring of the rich that characterizes the Bush Administration has
been hung out for everyone to see. On the other hand, the New Orleans catastrophe has driven Cindy Sheehan and the Iraq War off the front pages of newspapers and most websites, except when someone points out that National Guard troops and equipment supposedly needed to evacuate people are in Iraq. On the whole I think it has hurt the Republican Party, though, and I don't think they have a chance at the Presidency in 2008 unless (1) they nominate McCain and (2) McCain divorces himself from Bush entirely and denounces both the occupation of Iraq and the Bush Administration's handling of the New Orleans disaster.
