Impeach Bush protests in Salt Lake City

Protesters gathered in Salt Lake City throughout June to call for U.S. President Bush's impeachment for "High Crimes" such as international lawbreaking, killing innocent civilians in Iraq and the like.

Demonstrators in Salt Lake City, Utah took the declaration of June as “Impeach Bush” month seriously as they gathered every Thursday evening during the month from 5-7PM at the corner of 100 South and State streets to protest lack of U.S. President George W. Bush’s accountability for his war and human rights crimes and of congressional action to impeach Mr. Bush for those same crimes.

One demonstrator, who asked not to be identified, stated, “I can’t believe how many passersby, both on foot and in cars, who’ve indicated they support us. It’s at least ten to one over those who don’t, and this in heavily Republican Utah no less.” A visitor from Michigan, who joined in the sign holding, also noted how surprised she was to find such a protest going on every week in Utah.

The weekly “Impeach Bush” rallies were co-sponsored by People for Peace and Justice (PPJ) of Utah, Utah’s Green Party (GPUT), the student Democratic Club of Westminster College, the Committee for War Criminal Prosecution (CWCP) and Students for Freedom and Democracy (SFD).

In a written statement, CWCP co-chair, C.J. Tripp, indicated, “There’s no doubt U.S. President George W. Bush’s invasion and occupation of Iraq violated international law. Our research shows that he broke portions of: the 1907 4th Hague Convention treaty; the 1945 UN Charter; the 1945 Nuremberg Charter; the UN’s 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights; the 3rd and 4th 1949 Geneva Convention treaties; the UN’s 1984 anti-torture convention treaty; and 2002’s UN Security Council Resolution 1441.”

The statement continued, “These are all agreements that were binding upon the U.S. government at the time Bush violated them, either as a result of senatorial ratification or recognition of them as customary international law. And as if that wasn’t enough, Bush also breached the U.S. Constitution, especially Article VI, Paragraphs 2 and 3, through his actions. The only reason we can determine that the U.S. Congress hasn’t initiated impeachment proceedings, as per power granted to it by Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution, against Mr. Bush for his actions which definitely qualify as “High Crimes” can be summed up in three words: the Republican Party. The Republican Party fears that its hold on U.S. politics will be weakened if it does the right thing and impeaches Bush for his lawbreaking and other crimes.”

In concluding comments, Tripp stated, “Mr. Bush has crossed the line into international legal territory that a U.S. president should never enter these days. He’s returning international law to a pre-World War II might-makes-right condition whose legal and moral bankruptcy has already been demonstrated many times. The world has made a lot of progress since World War II in the war crimes and human rights legal arenas which should continue rather than being derailed by Bush. For such reasons, we of the CWCP and the other organizations represented at these demonstrations think Congress should perform its legal obligations by impeaching Mr. Bush.”
