Demonstration to Protest the Governor's Plans to Cut Education Funding, and His Support for Organizations That Target Immigrants

Protesters to Respond to Schwarzenegger Official Announcement to Go Ahead 70 Million Special Election

On Tuesday, June 14, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is coming to Santa Monica College to give the commencement address to graduating students at his alma mater. Meanwhile, he wants to cut education funding, teacher's wages, and jobs across California.

Students, faculty, and community, and progressive groups are planning to mount a protest against the Governor and his policies that favor ''special interest'' corporate-donors over working people.

This demonstration will be part of a growing movement against Schwarzenegger that has seen teachers, nurses, unions, and community organizations throughout California bring tens of thousands into the streets.

WHEN: Tuesday, June 14, at 5:00 p.m.

WHERE: Outside Santa Monica College
Corner of Pico and 17th Street, Santa Monica

Schwarzenegger’s corporate campaign for a $70 million special election this coming fall is not only an ''attack on working people and students in California, it is intended to pave the way for anti-union campaigns across the country.''

Schwarzenegger has also given support to the Minutemen Project that is targeting immigrants along the border. Many of Santa Monica College's graduates are immigrants themselves or come from immigrant families.

This protest is being organized to tell Schwarzenegger, that students, teachers, nurses, workers, and immigrants are NOT "special interests."

The protest is initiated by: A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition-Los Angeles, A.N.S.W.E.R. Youth and Student National Coalition, Santa Monica College Cuba Coalition and Global Resistance Network.

Over 300 organizations and individuals have endorsed the protest, including: Alliance for a Just and Lasting Peace in the Philippines, Arab American Anti-Discrimination Committee-LA/OC, Families to Amend Three Strikes (FACTS), Coalition Against Militarism in our Schools, Fernando Suarez del Solar, Coalition for Equal Marriage Rights, Carson High Peace Coalition, GABRIELA Network-Los Angeles, Latino Movement USA, National Lawyers Guild-LA, Palestinian American Women's Association, Party for Socialism and Liberation, Free Palestine Alliance, Palisadians for Peace, National Black United Front, Muslim Student Association-CSULB, Mark Twain Democratic Club, United Nations Association-USA, Santa Barbara County and many more.
