May 29, 2005. Los Angeles, CA—On June 20, 2005, a billboard on Sepulveda Boulevard, south of Santa Monica, is sure to cause controversy. The cause—a graphic image of a shadowy Uncle Sam figure controlling a newscaster puppet. The accompanying headline reads, "Shox News Channel: We Distort, You Comply." This parody of the corporate media and the media monopoly is the second billboard by the outspoken political artist Karen Fiorito, whose work explores the relationship between politics, propaganda and art. Fiorito explains her fascination with billboards:

"Art belongs to the masses, not only in galleries or museums. I take
my art to the street in order to make my voice heard by all people,
regardless of race or gender. Art plays a subversive role in society, offering an alternative narrative to the dominant culture. With this project, as with all of my art works, I hope to initiate a dialogue in the community, not only about political issues, but also about the assumption that art and politics do not mix."
A website, shoxnews.com, will correspond with the billboard, allowing viewers to post their comments. This project was made possible by a generous grant from the Puffin Foundation.

Karen Fiorito currently resides in Los Angeles, California. She has recently exhibited in Iceland, Milan, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston and Washington, DC (as well as Los Angeles.) Her artwork has appeared in Art in America, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Boston Phoenix, the LA Weekly, the Seattle Weekly and the Philadelphia City Paper. Fiorito received her Master's in Fine Art in Printmaking from Arizona State University and her B.F.A. from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

When: June 20, 2005
Where: Sepulveda, south of Santa Monica, Los Angeles, CA

dreck!

by a TRUE American Friday, Jun. 03, 2005 at 2:41 PM

With the vast, overwhelming incompetence of the liberal, left-wing media, is it any wonder that REAL Americans would look elsewhere for their news? Fox News serves a valuable purpose in American society by restoring journalistic integrity and balance to the mainstream media. Don't believe me? Ask the millions who tune in every day--far more, I might add, than will ever see your billboard.

Billboard Congrats, Mass Media Fading

Billboard Congrats, ...

I do not know if you read the real news reports on the web and in the streets, but we all know mass media is a bought off whore and only those unwilling to fight watch the garbage.

The true war is waging and it is not what you think. Do you believe every suicide of a high ranking government official or their auditors is a suicide? If you do, you belong to the lie of the Mass Media kings.

Those ruling America and commiting atrocities will control the media. They control us. Sometime I wonder if the full blown communist state is preferable to the coming war, bio-engineered and high tech blood flood.

Mobile Audit Club,

Free videos of abuse with music.

I was thinking of making a billboard in Alabama, but public opinion means nothing when no one cares if you live or die.

The war is now. The war is worldwide. Mass media should be destroyed in the USA, starting the whore for the federal Nazi, the FCC.

EADS is coming to a disenfranchised voter state in the South East USA, likely one city controlled by the international Nazi regime. EADS is a European Weapons Manufacturer whose German masterminds sucked the skeleton of Chrysler Corp. dry.

Support the freedom fighters of the world and weapons designers. We will need all the firepower we can get in the coming war, as the Nazi regime is taking our weapons. Let those billionaire genetic modified spud heads rest under soil.
