Minute Men Target Laguna Beach Day Laborers

by //**\\ Tuesday, May. 10, 2005 at 6:59 PM

**Please Circulate**

If you find the following article disturbing, please contact: http://www.govmail.ca.gov/
Let you voice be heard!!!!

Subject: Racists in Laguna Beach

Hi everybody,

About 40 people from the group Save Our State and the Minutemen showed up today to picket the state-sanctioned Day Laborers Hiring Center in Laguna Beach!

With a goal of intimidating people from stopping to pick up and hire workers, they had signs reading "Arrest the Employers".

When cars pulled into the hiring center, the protesters
snuck up behind the cars to take pictures of the drivers
and license plates, and yelled at the drivers to "hire
Americans", and they chanted "arrest the employers".
They also had signs that said "Illegals are criminals"
and "Go Home", and yelled that the immigrant workers
were "disease carriers" and "vermin". They came from
all over California, so it was a state-wide mobilization.
It was totally disgusting.

A group called Southern California Human Rights
Network (SCHRN), out of UC-Riverside organized
a counter-protest that had about 30 people. (I wish
that I could have put out a lot of calls to try to get more
people out- but I found out about the protest at about
9:30 on the night before! The protest started at 7:00
in the morning, so sorry if I wasn't able to call you! We
need to get a lot more organized for next time)

We were able to physically stop the racists from intimidating and taking pictures of workers and people driving in to hire the workers and to counter their chants. We out-yelled them with chants like "Racists Go Home", "Immigrants are welcome",
"Work is a Human Right", etc. The vast majority of people driving by showed support for our signs, like "Work is a Human Right", "Hire Here", "Immigrants are Welcome" and "Queremos un Mundo sin Fronteras".

We were also able to talk a lot to the workers at the hiring center. I think that it gave them confidence that our side was out there, and they were helping us to shout down the racists and stop them from taking pictures.

The people who worked for the hiring center were also very supportive and glad that we were there. According to workers at the hiring center, the
number of workers hired today was normal for a Saturday.

What we needed, however, was a MASSIVE number of people to numerically drown out the racists and intimidate them from trying again.

We need to get a network of people who can
respond to this stuff at the last minute. The Minutemen have also announced plans to come to California in August.

We CAN'T allow this to happen in our backyard. These guys are emboldened by what just happened in Arizona, and we have to stop it from going unchallenged here. Like I said, the group that organized the protest was Southern California
Human Rights Network at UC Riverside. They're organizing a conference on May 28th to talk about what to do.

Their contact info is below. We also need to be ready to respond if they try to go to the hiring center again (apparently this was the 3rd time they had been there! But they don't usually go two weeks in a row.)

Hopefully we can organize a network here in LA of people who are interested in responding.

What do people think?

P.S. Below are two things: a link to the article from the LA Times that talks about the Minutemen coming in August, and the article about today's protest that I wrote up for Socialist Worker.

"Volunteers Needed to Patrol Border of San Diego" LATimes
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-border5may05,1,5724645.story

Socialist Worker article:
LAGUNA BEACH, CA- About 40 people responded to
a call by the group Save Our State to picket the state-sanctioned
Day Laborers Hiring Center here today. With a goal of
intimidating people from stopping to pick up and hire workers,
members of Save Our State and the Minutemen gathered
with signs reading "Arrest the Employers". When cars pulled
into the hiring center, the protesters snuck up behind the
cars to take pictures of the drivers and license plates, and
yelled at the drivers to "hire Americans". They also carried
signs reading "Illegals are criminals" and "Go Home", and
yelled that the immigrant workers were "disease
carriers" and "vermin".

About 30 people counter-protested the racists. Organized
by the Southern California Human Rights Network (SCHRN),
the counter-protest confronted the racists and their message
with signs and chants of our own. The vast majority of people
driving by showed support for our signs, like "Work is a Human
Right", "Hire Here", "Immigrants are Welcome" and
"Queremos un Mundo sin Fronteras". We were able to
physically stop the racists from intimidating and taking pictures
of workers and people driving in to hire the workers and to
counter their chants. According to workers at the hiring
center, the number of workers hired today was normal for
a Saturday.

Chris Hernandez, who helped to organize the counter-protest,
told Socialist Worker that since the Minutemen were in
Arizona, "the racist vigilantes are on a power trip targeting
people who just want to exercise their human right to work.
This is a new face on the same old thing, like the Texas
Rangers."

"We're going to start getting out there in the media and
voicing some kind of response. We need people to join
our demonstrations. We have a majority, and we need to
demonstrate to the racists that they are outnumbered," said
Sara Kozumeh, another organizer with SCHRN. The
Minutemen have announced plans to be on the California
border in August. We have to stop them with a massive
show of anti-racism and support for the rights of
undocumented workers and for human rights.

Minutemen are US government sponsored

by they are paid goons Wednesday, May. 11, 2005 at 11:40 PM

Mm are not citizen activists, they are paid goons
They are brown shirts by any other name.

Don’t engage them out in the field. It won’t work.
These people are Nazis. Nazis are rats. Engaging them in the field will fail. Watch them and follow them to their nest. Then destroy the nest.

Immigration from desire or economic need??

by question globalization Thursday, May. 12, 2005 at 3:49 AM

What if people who came to North America actually wanted to come for the experience of travel, not because of poor economic conditions in their home country forcing emmigration??

If people from Mexico came to North America because they wanted to, the problems with immigration would be non-exisitent. There would be far less people coming north, and those who did would be more like tourists or guests than laborers..

People really don't want to leave their homeland to mow lawns or pick pesticide soaked vegetables. The majority of immigration is because of poverty in Mexico and other countries, globalization is the root source of this inequality. A border fence with militia, INS, barbed wire, etc. will do little to solve this problem..

Correcting the economic inequality between North and South America is the only solution to solving the problems caused by mass immigration up north. This is a complex problem not easily solved, but in the long term requires a balance. The US/Mex border cannot be easily maintained, causes ecological bottlenecks, nor is it effective in meeting it's stated goals..

Minute men

by Ken Wednesday, May. 18, 2005 at 8:28 AM

I don't know how to feel on this topic. Part of me feels it isn't right to hire illegal imigrants. More so for the fact that they aren't paying into our tax system. Not that they are taking our jobs. I don't know to many Americans who want to do the jobs that they do. The other part of me feels that we are all part of this great big planet and it shouldn't matter where we were born. If they want to work and better themselves then they should be allowed to. But government hired Goon's...Nazi's ??? This kind of talk is why our party and our voices are never taken seriously.

just look at their website

by more rational Wednesday, May. 18, 2005 at 6:46 PM

They are in the middle of a purge, where they're deleting the racists who post to their site, but, you may still find ample evidence that they are nazis or fascists. Just replace the word "Mexicans" with "Jews", and it'll be like reading history all over.

Also, they aren't all fascists. There's a mix of people and politics in there... but their organizational goals are defined by the leadership, not the membership. The leadership is friendly toward the facsists.

Also, as far as goons go, who knows. They have gotten praise from Tom Tancredo, and that's the government right there.

look at who negotiated nafta

by more rational Wednesday, May. 18, 2005 at 6:58 PM

The reason why the poor of mexico and the poor of the usa are getting screwed is because of nafta, and the people who negotiated it.

Recently, Vicente Fox said some insulting things about African Americans, saying that Mexicans will take jobs that "even their Black people will not take." Conservatives have glommed onto this, and been, in their own weird way, defending Black people's honor, and claiming that Fox is racist.

Well, Fox is racist. He's a racist white Mexican who's screwing over the brown people in Mexico. He's probably screwing over the Black people in Mexico too.

That conservatives should suddenly start siding with African Americans is hilarious to me. Didn't they want to keep them segregated? I heard some jerks on the radio ranting about Fox, and then an African American caller started placing the blame on the employers who hire the undocumented.... and next thing you know, the hosts started to insult her, saying she's competing for a minimum wage job and that she's screwed up. She wasn't! She owned a house and was in management!

Then, when a Latino guy called them on their racism, they called him a traitor. This guy was a veteran!

This is just a case of the slavemasters defending *their* slaves. On both sides, even.

The rich people on all sides negotiated NAFTA, and that guarantees that the working class, on all sides, will get screwed. If you don't create the system, you will be screwed by the system.

Ad Hominem assclowns corrected

by Gene Yuss Wednesday, May. 18, 2005 at 7:20 PM

less rational, sometimes I wonder if you're not a team of (bad0 comedy writers.

That conservatives should suddenly start siding with African Americans is hilarious to me. Didn't they want to keep them segregated?

More Republicans voted for the original Civil Rights Act than Democrats. And who’s ‘the conscience of he Democratic party?” Oh, that’s right. ROBERT KKK BYRD.

Republicans work for a color-blind society. Socialist & Democrats want racial hyphen-tribes to use as pawns.

They are in the middle of a purge, where they're deleting the racists who post to their site, but, you may still find ample evidence that they are nazis or fascists. Just replace the word "Mexicans" with "Jews", and it'll be like reading history all over.

Slight difference: the Jews in 1940s Germany were very much legal citizens. The illegals in America now are here...illegally.

Also, unlike the immigrant rush of the 1920s, Mexican illegals not only break the law in coming here, they arrive dependent on America’s welfare system, and the monies they make go back to the corrupt old country, which depends on them

The poster known as "Ken" also has it right.

It is the highest insult to call someone a nazi, and the side that does it first usually has no valid argument.

I've been erased

by Admires Bush Wednesday, May. 18, 2005 at 8:20 PM

Do a search for Bush Admirer and you will find zero posts on this website.

Some techno-weenie has written a script to erase all of my posts going back several years here.

What a triumph for the underclass.

Now I'll have to adopt a Fresca type name changing tactic in order to be heard here.

Meanwhile trashmouth no eyed man, less rational, and Meyer spew out their nonsense here completely unchecked. It's ass backwards.

That's what you have to love about liberals -- they're ass backwards in everything and every idea they possess. They can't debate so they simply erase.

You can't expect to get thru to flat-earthers. They're still in shock that the intarweb is a two-way street and they get as good as they give, if not better.

However I like to think that some 17-year-old one day caught one of my posts and found himself in a library, where he learned the murderous history of communism and why socialism always fails. Maybe later he'll become a business owner, another success.

If all the folks you listed believed their own BS, they'd be posting from communosocialist paradises like China, Vietnam, North Korea, Mexico or one of the many wonderful Swiss Miss countries that take 90% of your income in exchange for your freedom.

Follow the LAW

by Dee Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006 at 2:13 AM
one2watch@charter.net

What alternative universe are you living in. If you want to be a part of the country following the laws is a good way to start. If you are not here legally then you should not be working at all. Since all you people talk about is fairness, Do you think that its fair that immigrants from all over the world have to wait years up to 10 years to set one foot in this country legally and other people just sneak in. I guess all the Haitians, and Cubans, and African, and Eastern Europeans have to follow the laws but Latinos are not subject to the laws. That position is ridiculous. The real problem that no one seems to talk about is the corrupt politics of the Latin American countries. The leaders of these countries want a mass exodus because if the citizens of these countries had to stay home there would be Civil War throughout Latin America. The United States governement just wants stablized countries so corporations can exploit the cheap labor. The US gov't doens't care how the countries are stabalized and that's why immigration laws are totally disrespected. Go deeper in your analysis of this problem it is much greater and more complex than you must think, and hold the leaders of Latin America responsible for their roles in exploiting the poor in their countries.

corrupt politics of the Latin American countries

by Why? Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006 at 2:23 AM

Why do you think that they're so corrupt? Hmmmmm? It couldn't have anything to do with the corporate control brought about by Central Intelligence Agency or American military intervention policies could it?
Why are the military juntas always so corrupt? They operate that way, silly.
It's the fascism, stupid.
