Counter-Recruitment Students Confront President of College Santa Monica

by A Saturday, Apr. 30, 2005 at 11:35 AM

SANTA MONICA – April 28, 2005, After months of efforts to meet with the President of Santa Monica College to address the issue of military recruiters on campus, frustrated students and local community activists marched into the offices of the school district this Thursday.

After some time the president did emerge from his office to speak with the students. The exchange was not without substance and some points were addressed. At one point police did appear and were asked to wait outside by the president. There were no arrests. After about 15 to 20 minutes of discussion the students left peacefully.

Uploaded here is video from the event.

the presiden'ts "free speech" gambit

The students demanded the recruiters be banned from the college. The pres. of the college rolled out the predictable response that the recruiters have a free speech right. The students' response was pretty good, I'd give it a B+ for covering the main points (the recruiters should be banished for cause, i.e. omissions and misrepresentations so material they would change recruit's decisions, and, the war is an illegal war, not to mention an unjust and immoral war.

You all must focus much more exactly on the crime of the recruiters, i.e. the untruths. That is what distinguishes their communications from the free speech issue. They are proposing a contract involving grave harms, based on false representations.
