Skinhead

Skinheads are members of a subculture that originated in Jamaica in the 1960s. Skinheads were closely tied to the Rude boy of the West Indies and the Mods of the UK, and have their origins in these groups.

History
With a large migration of immigrant workers from Jamaica to Great Britain in the 1960's, the white working class youth began adopting the style of their Jamaican counterparts - short, cropped hair, straight-leg denim jeans with the cuffs rolled up, black military style boots, braces (suspenders) - and embraced the musical genre of ska. Skinheads are a product of Mod's, a subculture of youth noted for their consumerism and affection for style, music and scooters. Around 1965 a group of "hard" or "gang" mods, who could be identified by their shorter hair and working-class image, emerged from the larger mod scene. This resulted in a schism that produced "peacock mods" and skinheads, commonly known by that name by around 1968 (other early nicknames include "lemons" and "suits" among others). Early followers were mainly interested in and influenced by Jamaican Reggae and Ska music (The Spirit of '69), Jamaican Rude Boy culture and a dislike of those perceived as the "ruling classes." They had an extreme dislike for the government and many larger businesses as both appeared to misrepresent the working class and their wishes.
Skinhead culture exploded in the year 1969, after which the original skinheads slowly dropped into new categories, including the self-explanatory "Suede-head" (defined by the ability to manipulate one's hair with a comb) and the next-stage group, the "Smoothies" (often up to shoulder-length hairstyles). Both groups existed as lapse versions of skinheads, whose fashions regressed to their mod roots, introducing the more common wearing of brogues (originally an identifier once boots became too conspicuous) as well and the slacks-with-a-sweater look. Here was a far cry from the singly blue-jeaned and typically boot-toed skins of the past.
During the mid-1970's in the UK, the skinhead movement was reborn in an unexpected way. With the introduction of Punk Rock to the public, kids were looking for the next great shock-rockers. Skinheads with shorter hair, less emphasis on style and cleanliness, and a new sound grew and grabbed the attention of the media as a result of repeated incidents of hooliganism during football (soccer), often to the point of rioting, between skinheads and members of the so-called ruling class. So-called "Punk skins" also gained a great deal of media attention after they were recruited by the anti-immigration political group, the National Front who used the skinheads' reputation for violence to intimidate opposition. Most skinheads deny that their group was recruited to engage in racist and criminal activity by this organization, claiming that the National Front recruited street youth, shaved their heads to give them the appearance of skinheads, and paid them to bully, threaten and even enact violence upon immigrant workers.
The negative press generated concerning skinheads caused a demise in their numbers. American skinheads received the same spin as their British counterparts. Fueled by sensationalist television, skinheads were inaccurately stereotyped a mindless, violent, and racist. As a response to this negative stereotype, the 1980's saw the birth of the SHARP movement in New York. The group claims to be opposed all forms of bigotry.
The Third Wave of ska brought a resurgence in skinhead subculture in the early 1990's, and the popularity of the group continues to grow. Today, skinheads can be found in all of North America and Europe as well as in places such as some parts in South America.

Types Of Skinheads
There are a number of different "types" of skinhead, who divide themselves and their allegiances across political and racial lines.

Traditional (or Trads) or Originals - This group closely identifies itself with the original skinhead movement (Spirit of '69), maintaining working class pride and a dislike for the ruling class. Non-racist and largely apolitical. This group is the largest sect of the subculture.
SHARP (Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice) - Apolitical, and aggressively anti-racist. Considered to be the response to mass media's racial stereotyping of skinheads.
Anarcho Skinheads - Anarchist Skinheads, characterized by their music "AnarchOi!"
Red Skinheads - Communist Skinheads
Neo-Nazi Skins (sometimes called White Power and derogatorily referred to as "Boneheads" by Trads SHARPs, Redskins and Anarchoskins) - The most vocal and well recognized sect of the subculture. Racist and highly political.
NSkinheads - Same fascist ideas as Neo-Nazis, but these skinheads don't believe in "white power".

Those people who spend their weekends dressing up in highly detailed Civil War uniforms, camping out with tents, gear, and mess provisions identical to those of the era and re-enacting the battles of Gettysburg and Antietam? They're not bad people by any stretch of the imagination, but they're a little bit difficult to take seriously.

I remember running around in 1982 as a junior high school punk rocker, spouting that shit. It didn't change the planet any back then, and believe me, it won't now. Sorry if I'm coming off as a pissy old asswipe, but I'm just trying to let you know that your activism is more important--much, much more important--than this little game of role-playing thirty- or forty-year-old subcultures.

"Punk" and "skin" were barely clinging to relevance when I was into that scene twenty years ago. Nowadays, like the Civil War, they are strictly historical, of immediate interest only to scholars and people who like playing period dress-up. You kids have more important things to do right now than worry about that shit.

Anarchists Bow to Skinheads

Internet-fraud taken down under ultimatum
Objections by Objector fall flat

Anarchists have suffered significant "loss of face" in bowing to an ultimatum that they either quit misrepresenting Skinheads or get off the Internet. The website Objector.org, operating out of Oakland, California, had posted a page entitled Anarchists' Workshop, which claimed to speak for Skinheads and used the Skinhead trademark. When first notified of trademark-infringement, proprietor Kevin Ramirez removed the listing, writing that he "apologized for any inconvenience caused." However, Ramirez, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, quickly reposted the unlawful infringement and dared Skinheads to stop him. Objector seeks donations by advertising that it is a federally tax-exempt organization.

The anarchists were hosted by Atlanta-based Interland.com, which refused to remove the listing. Davina Furnish, attorney for the hosting company, told Skinheads that "Interland remains unconvinced that it is subject to legal liability for the website you have been complaining about." Skinheads then threatened to hold not only the hoster but the upstream provider, AT&T, liable. AT&T, which had previously removed an infringement by Divista.com, had stated that it would not permit its network to be used for trademark-infringement against Skinheads. AT&T immediately swung into action, directing Interland to remove the illegal usage.

Interland continued to balk, arguing with both Skinheads and AT&T that it should be allowed to misrepresent Skinheads on the grounds of "free speech." Finally, under threat of a lawsuit, Interland ordered the anarchists to either comply or get off the Internet. In a letter to Skinheads, Furnish bewailed that "somehow you have convinced AT&T that they could have liability -- it baffles me. As a result, we have notified our customer of the issue and I understand that the site has been modified." Over two-dozen similarly infringing websites have been shut down by Skinheads over a three-year period. According to Sean Gray, who has been a Skinhead for only a few months, beating anarchists is just the beginning, because now "it's time to change the world."

That nazi skin site has it wrong. Nothing's ever so simple that it always cuts so cleanly along race and/or class lines. Traditionally, the working class are race mixers. It's the middle classes who can afford to segregate. Also, the working class in the first world sympathize with the people in the third world, but just as often, are going to participate in their oppression, because it's the oppression in the 3rd world that makes life comfortable in the first.

That's one root of racism. It's the attempt of the working class white person to escape their class, by participating in global oppression of nonwhites.

In America, after years of multicultural ideology, we're getting to the point where working class people of all colors are afforded this opportunity to become little Condi Rices, and sell out their distant relatives in other countries.

SKINHEADS GAINING MOMENTUM

Bush-occupation has been dealt another body-slam. This time from Germany,
where Skinheads and their allies have staged one of their largest protests
to end American occupation. According to correspondent Oliver Raninger,
the turnout, for as far as the eye could see, in Dresden, was more than just
symbolism. Some seventy percent of the youth in attendance were Skinheads.
"Thank you and hail to you, comrades," said Raninger to American Skinheads,
who he credits for inspiration. German Skinheads have to cope with laws
designed to squelch Nationalism, which seem unbelievable to Americans. For
instance, what they say, the slogans they use, the banners they carry, the
symbols they raise and, even, the way they gesture is all restricted, but the
Skinheads have proven to be ever so resourceful.

Held high at the protest were Medieval flags, historic coats-of-arms and
ingenious never-before-seen designs, all evoking Nationalism, but beyond the
reach of authorities. Speakers chose their words carefully, but were no less
strident in demanding resurrection of their nation. Just a look at the sea
of Skinheads signaled that the resurrection is already in progress. George
W. Bush, booed in Italy, could not help but take note. The theme of ousting
Bush from Germany was bolstered by crosses labeled "Baghdad", in
support of the freedom-fighters martyred in Bush's Israeli-instigated
war-of-atrocity against Humanity. Americans, fed a "diet of worms" that
opposition to Bush is, somehow, driven by the left, were energized by their
counterparts of the right in Dresden. American leaders could not attend,
however, due to threats of arrest by Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

Banners, protesting the American and British bombing of the magnificent
Medieval city during World War II, regarded as one of the worst war-crimes
in history, also were emblazoned "East Prussia", a salient call to bring captive
lands, held by Poland and Russia, back to the homeland. Americans have
been propagandized that there is simply a "West" and "East" Germany. Both
zones, however, comprise "West" Germany. "Central" Germany, made up
largely of Pomerania, is currently occupied by Poland, while "East" Germany,
historically Teutonic regions, are occupied by Russia and Poland. Raninger
related how the hysterical news-media brands Skinheads as "haters" and
"criminals," similar to propaganda leveled in America. But, lately, the attacks
have spurred on unprecedented growth and power.

The Germans said, as Osama bin Laden had also said, that by calling for
an end to the occupation, they were not berating the American people, but
only the spurious White-House leadership, which has gone against the will
and honor of the nation. Literature distributed at the rally was well-printed
and carefully screened to avoid "hate" charges. For example, there was a
depiction of a coffin, signifying the burying of freedom by Bush. Images
of the atrocities against Dresden, where 350,000 people died, were shown,
next to determined images of youth resolved to avenge the crime, sixty
years later. Homage was paid, beneath a mass of large black flags, to those
fighting the American and Soviet invasion, with images of pious families
keeping an eternal vigil against Communism, at the tombs of their loved ones.

Communications between Skinheads on both sides of the Atlantic are still
in need of improvement, as evidenced by attempts by the Germans to honor
their American counterparts and build solidarity. Given as American "contacts,"
for instance, were a vacant trailer in Missouri and several defunct post-office
boxes in Florida and Washington State. One pamphlet suggested contacting
an "organization," which had been defunct since its proprietor went to jail.
Raninger makes up for the deficit, however, by inundating Americans with
images, speeches and commentaries from the protest. Speakers, for instance,
took Israel to task, but sidestepped mentioning "dead" Jews, because of the
Schroeder-regime ban on "defaming the dead." The point of pure land and
pure blood was made by so many pure hearts, on the bombing-anniversary,
notwithstanding.

Although Raninger compliments American Skinheads, because they express
themselves more openly, the Germans have become more adept in turning
out large numbers. German Skinheads do not have extensive Internet-access,
for instance, and the Internet is scrutinized by police to keep Nationalist
content off. Most patriotic information is posted from America. Still, the
Germans have overcome all obstacles. The many Skinheads jailed are
remembered by images of Skins-in-Chains. Periodicals, entitled "Free Script"
and "Realignment", are popular, hand-to-hand. Bootleg CD's, entitled "Courage
to Speak the Truth Creates Justice" and "From Our Graves We Shall Arise",
have saturated the country. One of the most-popular pamphlets depicts a
broken-down "Uncle Sam" with a Star of David on his hat.

The Germans have been especially talented in tapping into vast, popular
emotions, on occasions of great historical significance. Americans have
promoted opposition to the King Holiday and remembrance of Henry Schaad.
But, German Skinheads attract large numbers, outside their own ranks, through
military-like spectacle and dramatic oratory. American Skinheads try to catch
up through music, where they may lack in speech-making, but are yet to reach
their stride. Rather than a source of division, however, mutual respect for a
common goal has drawn Skinheads together, despite old wounds. Raninger, for
instance, sends greetings inscribed with Germanic runes, which are exchanged
for American salutations, including red-white-and-blue insignia. While e-mails
often are in native tongues and not readily decipherable, Andy Winter, a German
Skinhead, keeps a computer-translator handy, to instantly read and reply to
messages from America.

The Germans have perfected "Real-Politik", gearing their protest entirely to
their own people. Although Americans were mentioned favorably, on the side,
publications, speeches and symbols were all German. Some Americans had
attempted to adapt German insignia and heritage to America. But, since Ronald
Reagan visited the Bittberg Cemetary and declared that hostilities were over,
many Skinheads focus more on building bridges across the seas than imposing
one culture upon another. Matt Hale, for instance, who had attempted to appeal
to Skinheads by using German-like imagery, announced, after he had failed, that
he was "on the same side" as the Jews, during his sentencing to forty-years for
murder-solicitation. Hale, also, denounced the German World-War-II police,
which he had previously claimed to idolize. Grounded, to the contrary, on bedrock
patriotism, Skinheads are creating new momentum, leaving observers to conclude
that, no matter what George W. Bush may do, Skinheads are unstoppable and so
is the end of the occupation of Germany, as well as of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Skinheads have, indeed, preached the funeral of "diversity," Communism and
"globalism."
