Gender issues in genocide will also be discussed during this week of activities at UCLA

Subject:
Genocide, Gender, Awareness, Action - Feb. 28 - Mar. 3

A dynamic, diverse group of student activists have formed a coalition to
focus attention on
genocide in the past (Armenia, Rwanda, the Holocaust) and the present
(Sudan), while also
remembering those who have perished. Gender issues in genocide will
also be discussed
during this week of activities at UCLA. Outstanding students, scholars,
and activists will be
participating.

Along with the most updated information about the crisis, the activities
are geared to a plan
of action as well -- how people can make a difference, how they can get
involved, what
individuals can do to bring about change to alleviate the crisis.

Crisis in Darfur: A Week of Awareness, A Call to Action
February 28 - March 3, 2005
The violence in the Darfur region of western Sudan intensified in 2003
when two groups,
the Sudanese Liberation Movement and the Justice and Equality movement
declared open
rebellion against the government. Khartoum responded aggressively,
allegedly backing the
so-called jinjaweid militias (evil on horseback) which have committed
crimes against
humanity against citizens in Darfur. The UN reports that upwards of
70,000 have been
killed in the conflict though other sources estimate that over 300,000
people have perished
and 2.5 million have been displaced.
