A broad overview of media bias and racism focusing on a recent broadcast by Fox 29 News (Philadelphia) implicating the MOVE Organization in a 2002 murder.
“The frightening thing is that the presses involvement in the MOVE debacle was in no way unique; it is instructive for the present, the future, and for any number of contexts and loci, not just racist Philadelphia. Don’t forget – two things always define the media’s perspective: money and power. And the resulting “blindness” is therefore often willful”
Since September 11th, 2001 the US corporate media has shown its true colors, fully exposing itself as an arm of the state, keeper of the lie. Watch the evening news for just one night and it is painfully obvious whom they are reporting for. However, the fact remains that hundreds of millions of people watch FOX, CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC and depend on them for their entire worldview. Most people do not know that these media sources are owned by only a few multi-national corporations who work for the government so that the government will work with them. This ignorance, perpetuated by blatantly biased reporting, is extremely dangerous.
One of the clearest cases is FOX news, which is almost openly the mouthpiece for the Bush administration. FOX is pseudo-news in that its format resembles right wing talk radio more than it does news programming. FOX has worked hand in hand with the Bush administration in order to suppress information that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Their pro-war stance has extended into every aspect of their programming as they attempt to trash any who are in opposition. More recently FOX reporting was pivotal in influencing public opinion in order to convict civil rights attorney Lynne Stewart on trumped up charges (her sentencing is coming up and she is facing 20-40 years in prison).
On Monday evening (2/21/05) and Tuesday morning FOX broadcast a story that’s irresponsibility and faulty journalism must be protested because of how dangerous its implications are. The story, reported on by Dave Shrapweiser, deliberately misrepresents the MOVE Organization and is aimed at misleading the public in order to slander and implicate MOVE and supporters of MOVE in a murder that they did not commit. For those that do not know: MOVE is a revolutionary organization whose belief is the protection of life. The government has attacked MOVE on numerous occasions; most notably on August 8th, 1978 when police shot in MOVE headquarters and arrested 9 MOVE members who are still serving 30-100 years in prison for a crime that evidence proves they are innocent of and on May 13th, 1985 when Philadelphia police, along with the State and Federal government dropped a bomb on MOVE’s home which murdered 11 innocent MOVE people and burned down 62 homes.
Currently the media has been working to try to convince the public that MOVE was involved in the murder of John Gilbride, a man who was at one time a supporter of the Organization and was involved in a custody battle with a MOVE mother. In Dave Shrapweiser’s report he indicates that a breakthrough has been made in the investigation of Gilbride’s murder and that an arrest may soon be made. All throughout the broadcast MOVE is being pointed to with images and interviews in order to suggest to people that MOVE is responsible. FOX’s broadcast and past reports fail to investigate crucial aspects of this case such as Gilbride’s 2nd wife, a woman only known by her last name (Rosario), who disappeared soon before the murder and the documented gambling and drug problem of John Gilbride. The report states that Maple Shade, NJ police are working with Philadelphia police in order investigate the murder. According to Philadelphia police commissioner Sylvester Johnson this is a lie, Philadelphia police are not a part of the investigation. All of those concerned with accuracy in reporting and justice should be very concerned with this blatant abuse of media power and take immediate action!
In order to keep the pressure on Fox news we are targetting their sponsors, those who advertise with them. The statements below clearly explain the situation. Please act immediatly by contacting these sponsors and let them know that you disagree with this slanderous, irresponsible journalism and that if they don't want their companies name involved in this then they should take a stand too!
