BUSH'S 'OWNERSHIP SOCIETY'

by Bret Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005 at 7:25 PM

Bush often speaks of an 'ownership society' where all Americans must strive to own our own property, our own homes, cars, educations etc. So why not own our own energy-producing technology?

A LETTER TO THE DNC COURTESY OF ME:

WE THE PEOPLE WANT OUR OWN ENERGY POLICY

Social Security Option 6 (The Green Compromise): Democrats should push for more choice in personal accounts. Each of the current 5 options generates interest from private investments in exploitable commodities such as petroleum. What if our-oil-based economy crashes? As the price of gas rises, so should the demand for viable product lines that use renewable sources of energy such as solar panel homes and zero emissions hybrid vehicles. We want an investment option that restores balance and guarantees long-term sustainability. "The Green Compromise" is an option for a 6th social security account. If supported by the Democrats and our 59 million voters, this option will create a major shift in the energy sector, creating competition for Big Oil and pressuring price reductions. As the price of oil decreases, the investment in other commodoties increases. This will in effect, increase disposable income to be invested in other areas of the economy such as retail. Option six will also advance science and technology in America. The stock portfolio in option 6 will consist of 3 major stocks: 25% BP (Beyond Petroleum) who has major investments in solar technology, 25% PLUG Inc. who has an R+D partnership with Honda to develop self-sufficient home-energy stations that also recharge hydrogen fuel cell cars and 25% Honda who is a leader in fuel efficient vehicles. And finally 25% should be divided equally among all private partners who support the Department of Energy's "Million Solar Roofs" National Initiative***

***Note: Some of these smaller green companies are owned and controlled by parent oil companies who use them to receive pollution credits and do not develop them. Americans want assurance that IRA accounts in option 6 will draw interest from legitimate green companies connected to R+D of clean energy. For example: Hydrogen can be derived from wind and solar electricity, yet Bush grants R+D to hydrogen fuel cell technology where the hydrogen is derived from petroleum ('The Freedom Car' project)

If we introduce this compromising legislation, maybe we will learn that Republicans are more concerned with supporting private investment firms who draw profits from big oil, than they are with the financial security of millions of Americans. "The Green Compromise" will expose their true motives.

It's time we put our money where our mouths are. It's time we hear the truth.

With the demand for petroleum increasing among developing nations such as India and China....and production of oil reaching its peak within our lifetime...perhaps it's time we had an insurance policy. Perhaps personal renewable energy accounts could be an optional add-on account independent of the social security system all together. If Democrats want a renewable energy policy...give people a chance to choose one.
