I think a few decades in the future, Communism will be seen as a relative success. In particular, it helped get a lot of people out from under the heel of colonialism. They pushed a lot of "backwards" countries toward industrialization. They promoted the idea of the separation of church and state in places where it was ahead of its time.

It was an idea, and a practice, that worked to inspire people to fight against colonizers, or to overthrow feudalism, monarchy, and the bourgeios elite.

What's happened since, is that these countries have transformed into something else that's not communism. The change, however, is mostly coming from within. Changes in China, Vietnam, Russia, and other countries, comes from within. Communism created the preconditions for "velvet revolutions" where people attempt change without civil war.

The question to ask is, "would these countries have been able to get where they are today without having gone through Communism?"

I think the answer is basically "no". During colonial phases, land and resource ownership is extremely imbalanced and unfair. Communism, by nationalizing resources, allows the state to stop the profit-taking and export of wealth, and refocus the profits into domestic spending.

I thought I'd find some articles about this, but got distracted by an interesting essay about post-communist politics in Poland.

You are actually talking about nationalism, not communism. Communism did not bring people together in China, Russia or Vietnam, nationalism did.
