thanks for posting these photos.
aside from these groups and the unions, who marched together and had a strong presence, the parade was sad sad sad. Nothing but military bands, JROTC groups, military trucks. We were wondering how the organizers of a parade to honor our greatest pacifist could have all this military presence. but elsewhere on Indymedia is information on how CORE, the sponsors of the parade, are right wing, and it all makes sense now.
I wonder--would a parade for Malcolm X have been so easily co-opted? but I guess we'll never know, since there ARE no parades for Mr. X, at least not here in LA. Or are there? I know there are small celebrations and commemorations, but I've never heard of anything like the MLK parade. Makes me wonder about the nature of people are more easily consumed into the Spectacle and those who are not.
