Thousands of Cubans to March in Protest against Latest US Sanctions

by Prensa Latina Friday, May. 14, 2004 at 6:15 PM

Havana.-

Hundreds of thousands of Cubans are expected to take to the streets on

Friday in a huge march in front of the US Interest Section in Havana to protest

the recently announced sanctions against the Cuban revolution by the Bush

administration. The demonstration will take place along the Havana seawall drive

and will end in front of the US Interest Section, according to an official call

in Cuban media. Cuban authorities have pointed out that the sanctions stem from

hatred, frustration and fallacy, accumulated in 45 years of permanent

interference by US administrations. The Bush measures are a synthesis of the

fascistic and inhumane concepts promoted by the US ultra rightwing party in

power, illustrated by the violations, torture, violence and humiliation

practiced by the US Army against the Iraqi people and prisoners since the

occupation of the country. The Cuban people will not be humiliated, insulted or

trampled upon and will not hand over its achievements to a rapacious aggressor

that has been trying to suffocate the country with hunger and disease for more

than four decades, the statement underlines. The Bush administration has

proposed to spend more than 60 million dollars to bombard the Island with radio

and TV broadcasts with disinformation in order to feed subversion. Although it

failed before, Washington is again trying to apply the sections of the 1997

Helms-Burton Act that allow judging citizens from third countries in US courts

for doing business with Cuba and refusing US visas to foreigners with

investments in Cuba.
