South Korea, Terror of the Construction Mafia

But inhabitants of a residential area in Ilsan are fighting back!

MSSC STRUGGLE REPORT (05.08/09)

☞ first pictures from before yesterday’s attacks and article (Korean)
☞ movie and pictures about yesterday night’s attacks
All over South Korea you have daily new construction sites. Streets, bridges, power plants but above all apartment houses. Mainly you can see new at least 20-floor buildings, from outside they are looking not really nice. Inside they are roomy and technically on the newest standard. They only one have problem: the majority of the new build apartment houses have only owner-occupied flats. Because South Korea is a very small country for to construct new residential areas they have to destruct entire “old” – often not older than 30 years – residential areas. But here many more poor families just rented flats. And when they have to leave they get not even one Won as compensation. Just they have to leave on the fastest way no one cares about to where, how… But not the inhabitants of Ilsan’s - a industrial a city on the northwestern edge of Seoul - Pung-dong residential area. After they heard about the destruction plans late April, they decided to stay and to resist. At first the construction company build a huge metal wall around the area the plan to build the new apartment complex to isolate the inhabitants. Then they ordered the city administration to “solve the problem” to get the area empty. Like usual the city administration hired a contract company to “solve the problem”. But the employees are not ordinary employees, just they are criminal gangsters, trained to terrorize people such as the inhabitants of Pung-dong until they leave their homes (by the way, surely the employers of such companies are criminal too and of course also the people who use their “services”!). Before yesterday (05.07) dozens of those gangsters, armed with fire bombs, iron bars, precision slingshots and special modified excavators at 5:30 pm they started the fist wave of attacks, but the defenders were able to fight them back, by massive using Molotov cocktails. Yesterday morning at 3:30 the second wave started lasting many hours until the late evening by using massive precison slingshots and trying to burn down everything, but even the defenders had to suffer several serious injures they didn’t gave up until the attackers withdraw from there. And, possibly on Monday the attacks will continue, the defenders are ready to fight back – “What we have to lose?”, they ask “This is our home! If they take it we are on the end. We just fight for survival!” Please pay attention to the first picture in the second row (from below): it's a catapult to shoot woth huge rocks, it can kill people! Ha, and after leaving the area before yesterday night the gangsters shoot with precision slingshots and iron nuts behind us - not nice, not really.
