'Fake' Iraqi photos remind Rush of Lincoln Center

by Rush Limbaugh Tuesday, May. 04, 2004 at 10:36 PM

Rush speculates that the photos of Iraqi prisoner abuse are faked--even so he finds them rather tame; "I mean this is something you can see at Lincoln Center from an NEA grant, maybe on Sex in the City: the Movie."

Babes Doing the Torture in Iraq

May 3, 2004

First off these pictures of these prisoners of war. You know, the Brits are denying that the pictures that ran in the Daily Mirror are even genuinely and legitimately out of Iraq. Equipment in those pictures they say they never sent to Iraq, uniforms are incorrect, people don't do that. In these American prisoners of war, have you people noticed who the torturers are? Women! The babes. The babes are meting out the torture. Well, I've just been asked if I'm surprised.

You know, I could get into a lot of trouble here with this. No, part of me is not -- yes, I'm surprised. I am surprised. I do not believe -- I will go to my grave placing women on the pedestal of gentleness. On the surface it's a smart move, but in real life it could be incredibly stupid, but regardless - women are tougher than -- you know, we all must be honest about this. I mean, this business of weaker sex is all a bunch of trumped up stuff they teach when you you're five years old and you end up living your whole life that way, and it's just one big mystery that never gets solved.

At any rate, ladies and gentlemen, I just have a tough time believing all this. There's some question now that some of these photos have been doctored and they're not totally legitimate. And I think what needs to happen here -- we need to keep this in perspective.

Here's the way I see this. About as many soldiers are said to be involved in these outrageous acts of torture against the Iraqi prisoners as there have been plagiarizing and fabricating reporters working for the New York Times, USA Today, and other papers around the country. We have as many indecent acts by these soldiers as we have plagiarist reporters working for mainstream media, partisan media institutions here. I mean it's awful when it happens, don't you just hate it when it happens? But it doesn't mean the entire institution is disreputable. It doesn't mean the military is all bad and it doesn't mean that the media is all bad just because you've got some plagiarists out there making things up, making up quotes, making up people, saying they were places where they weren't. You know, torture is torture. Plagiarism is plagiarism.

But I think that we need somebody with expertise to get to the bottom of this. And I think we should send Kerry over there. John Kerry, who has lots of experience in war atrocities. He admitted to committing them. He came back from Vietnam, and he's testifying there before the Senate, he says I did this, and I did that, and what Kerry said he did, is far worse than what's depicted in these pictures. I mean can we be honest here? What Kerry said he did, and what Kerry said other people, other soldiers did in Vietnam -- and, by the way, we need to point out again that he did not report these atrocities when he saw them. He did not go to a commanding officer and say, "This is ridiculous what's happening here, what I saw. We've got to stop this," or he didn't say it's ridiculous what I'm doing. You got to stop me.

No, he waited till he got back home, joined the Vietnam Veterans Against the War and then started telling these tales, spinning these stories; and the acts that he described, he saw committed by U.S. soldiers, make these torture acts that are ostensibly depicted in these photos rather tame.

Folks, these torture pictures with the women torturers, I mean Marv Albert looking at those pictures would say, "Hey, that doesn't look so bad." You know, if you really look at these pictures, I mean I don't know if it's just me but it looks like anything you'd see Madonna or Britney Spears do on stage. Maybe you can get an NEA grant for something like this. I mean this is something you can see at Lincoln Center from an NEA grant, maybe on Sex in the City: the Movie. I mean, it's just me.

by wonkette Thursday, May. 06, 2004 at 1:43 AM

Rush Limbaugh has put it all in perspective, after a caller remarked that the "stack [of] naked men" was "like a college fraternity prank."

---- RUSH: Exactly. Exactly my point! This is no different than what happens at the skull and bones initiation and we're going to ruin people's lives over it and we're going to hamper our military effort, and then we are going to really hammer them because they had a good time. You know, these people are being fired at every day. I'm talking about people having a good time, these people, you ever heard of emotional release? You of heard of need to blow some steam off? ----

Of course. That's how I like to unwind at the end of a hard day. Some soft music, a cocktail and some simulated ass-fucking. Oh, I'm sorry: Forcing someone else into simulated ass-fucking. And hey, isn't it nice to see a leader in the conservative movement finally come out in favor of a "don't ask, don't tell" policy in the military.

Conservatives Don't like Bush

by Patrick J. Buchanan Thursday, May. 06, 2004 at 2:06 AM

Bush believes God has called him to liberate the repressed peoples of Iraq and the Islamic world, because freedom is God's gift to mankind, and when men are made free, they do not war with one another.

Yet, as one looks to Najaf, Fallujah and Sadr City, this seems not only naive but delusional. Where did George W. Bush of Midland-Odessa and Crawford get these ideas?

History shows that the liberated often turn to oppressing their oppressors. Liberated from Saddam, the Kurds seized Kirkut and its oil fields and started kicking Arabs out. The Shi'ites await a Shi'ite-dominated Iraq. The Sunnis do not believe in majority rule. They believe in Sunni rule. When we liberate a people, we liberate not only its democrats but its demons.

---------------------

Patrick J. Buchanan was twice a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, served three presidents in the White House, a founder/editor of the magazine, The American Conservative, and a TV commentator.

by more rational Thursday, May. 06, 2004 at 4:52 AM

Why are illegal drugs so lucrative?

Because demand exceeds supply. Drugs sell themselves.

There aren't that many "pushers" most of the time. Drug sellers just supply product to an existing demand.

The war on drugs is a waste of time. People like to get intoxicated, and consider intoxication a part of the culture. This Bud's for You!

Yes, there are better things to do than get high, but, there are many more worse things too.

Kinsa,

I agree that the media should fairly portray the fault on all sides of the equation. Including the U.S.

I my experience, there is never one group that is biased and one that it not. Bias is universal. And though the media is not solely "liberal," there are liberal elements that put just as much of a spin on news as their conservative counterparts.

Just try not to get caught in the trap of thinking in black-and-white terms about who is susceptible to thinking in black-and-white terms. This seems to be a theme around here lately (on all "sides"), and it is highly contagious.

Occam on accusations of a liberal media

by lucius Sunday, May. 09, 2004 at 7:57 PM

With regard to people who say that about 99% of the media has a certain bias, consider the following possibility.

(listen up, all you fans of Occam's hypothesis)

This is the Age of Communication, right? So just suppose... that there are a lot of facts and perspectives bouncing around in the world today. That people all over the world are being exposed to them, and this facilitates a more well-informed, more intelligent public than ever before in history.

Now, suppose that there is a relatively small contingent of people in America--a minority, if you will--who cling to extremely divisive, single-minded belief systems.

This contingent cannot accept many of the facts about what is going on in the world (US troops cannot do bad things because they are US troops; a Republican president cannot do bad things because liberals suck and Republicans don't; this war wasn't sloppy, reckless, and a PR nightmare for the U.S., it was the good guys deposing a bad guy; etc).

Neither can they process the fluid, multifaceted points of view that people all over the world are learning in order to adapt to these complex times. Thus, the ultra-conservatives are creating little islands of news for themselves, and dreaming of a day when people of their bigoted ilk once again rule over the press, tailoring the news and leaving out facts as their "comfort zone" demands.

The folks on LA IMC who waste everyone's time with these baiting tactics can't contradict many of the facts posted on this site, they are often at a loss to match the logic of arguments posed by people who visit the forum, and many of them are suffering from wounded self-esteem after defending Bush's honesty during the early phases of the WMD allegations. They are caught in the worldview equivalent of a bear trap, and think they'll get out of it by gnawing at the legs of the people walking by.

There is liberal bias in news, and it amounts to is a contingent of people who claim to have progressive views, but use the same dumbing-down tactics to get them across. Of course this happens; it is the law of averages. There is no liberal conspiracy, however, because honestly, conservatives are much more organized when it comes to Empire-building. Conservatives know what they want, and they want to WIN. Liberals end up questioning each other almost as much as the other guy, so they never really manage to muster up that kind of focus.

BTW, if I ever criticize someone in this forum, and at some point they were arguing with someone else, here, that doesn't mean that I agree with the other person. Nor does trying to engage people respectfully (regardless of how different their views are from mine) mean that I agree with them.

Considering how many times I have been accused of being someone I'm not, I ought to start using the above disclaimer as a signature line for every post I make here. Please, people--I'm really not that fucking interesting.
