Racist Stereotype of Mexican

by Paul Lopez Saturday, May. 01, 2004 at 1:05 PM

OC Weekly prints racist stereotype on the cover of their magazine!!!

I woke up this morning and went to go get an OC Weekly like I do every week and what I saw on the cover absolutely appalled me. Take a look and see for yourself. [image]http://www.ocweekly.com/images/ink/04/34/lgsm34cover.jpg[/image] http://www.ocweekly.com/ I am going to set up a protest some time this week to let the OC Weekly know they can not blatantly post racist material like this. If you are willing to help me organize this protest against the OC Weekly and their advertisers please e-mail me at paul_lopez16@yahoo.com Here is the OC Weekly's information below I have already wrote to them and they were trying to tell me the picture wasn't racist. Give me a break. When is a picture like that not racist towards Mexicans? Call or write them. EDITOR is Will Swaim letters@ocweekly.com For print advertisement please call: (714) 550-5950 Direct number: (714) 550-5950 Our main line: (714) 550-5900 mail it to: OC Weekly 1666 N. One reason they may have printed a racist picture

by Paul Lopez Saturday, May. 01, 2004 at 1:50 PM

MONDAY, Aug. 19 The Jew-hatin’, Alta California reclamation-promotin’ La Voz de Aztlan—which bills itself as a "totally independent news service"—announces that its website ranks among the top on the Internet, beating out most other Latino, Chicano, Hispanic and Mexican-American sites in popularity. Which either means there must be a lot more anti-Semitic reconquista knuckle-draggers who know how to use a computer than we thought, or that those who actually foster a fear of a brown planet—your Glenn Spencers, your Barbara Coes, your Harald Martins—regularly visit Whittier-based La Voz de Aztlan’s site. Or both. The World Wide Web-ranking service Alexa.Com used the number of hits and links to www.aztlan.net as its basis for charting La Voz near the top. "The ranking . . . shows that La Voz de Aztlan website is more popular than many of the well-funded national Hispanic organizations’ websites such as those of NCLR and MALDEF," boasts publisher Hector Carreon, referencing the National Council of La Raza, which is the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights group, and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. "Also, we are particularly proud that we outranked in popularity the across-town website of the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles." La Voz certainly has a bug up its culo when it comes to our Hebrew brethren. A recent posting characterizes Jewish groups that ensure products are kosher as engaging in a "Kosher Nostra Scam" that is squeezing millions in "protection" money out of corporate America. La Voz blames zionists for recent U.S. intelligence failures and for a California appeals court’s ruling to omit "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance. Closer to home, La Voz smears prominent Orange County Latinos who criticize La Voz’s rabid anti-Semitism (see Gustavo Arellano’s "La Voz de Pendejos," July 12). We just clicked on this most popular of websites and downloaded an article that accuses the Walt Disney Co. of insensitivity toward Mexicans. They illustrate the piece with Mickey Mouse wearing a yarmulke and holding a Star of David. To build its case against "super Jewish mogul Michael Eisner," La Voz lifts nearly word-for-word from an article published by the Holocaust-denying, Newport Beach-based Institute for Historical Review (A Clockwork Orange, June 28). You know what they say: one no-good hate group deserves another.

They are a bunch of racists, and people on IMC and elsewhere have denounced them.

I suspect that the anti-Jewish position they rant about has more to do with being a Catholic than with being a Mexican, or living among the white people in Whittier. (The last address I saw associated with Hector Carreon was up in the foothills in Whittier, not down by Pico Rivera.)

Just because they say they are exposing hate in their article about Mexicans. It still doesn't make it right to use a racist stereotype of hate to make a point. Maybe they should use a picture of a an African American hanging in a tree to show hatred towards black people. I think someone there at the OC Weekly are racists towards Mexicans

Ridiculous

by cliChe Guevara Sunday, May. 02, 2004 at 9:21 PM

This is so stupid. PHOTOGRAPHERS AND JOURNALISTS OFTEN USE STEREOTYPES AND APPALLING PICTURES TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR POINT! Writing an article about racist hatred towards blacks and having a picture of a lynching is NOT a racist activity. The picture would have demonstrated how real racism is. Anyone who looks at a cartoon of Zapata and says "THATS SO RACIST", especially when the article is discussing racist hatred and stereotypes towards Mexican culture, is a fucking moron. The cartoon is supposed to be a symbol of these stereotypes, but you missed the whole fucking point in the aftermath of your boredom. There's a line between racism and satire, and if you're too stupid to see that line, your credibility is gone. Do you not have ANYTHING you are doing that is worthwhile? Maybe that's the reason you want to hold a FUCKING PROTEST against OC Weekly. Even if you somehow STILL continue to think this an unjustifiable racist remark against Mexicans, there is still an unlimited inventory of REAL racist organizations that you could be spending your time battling. Grow up. Dont pick targets just because they are easy. Pick targets who are deserving.

by G-Slice Monday, May. 03, 2004 at 5:07 AM

Paul, you might just be a troll trying to stir up trouble against OC Weekly and divert activists from other issues... but you're probably just a fucking idiot. As a previous poster said, look at the goddamn cover!!! It's talking about OC's hatred for Mexicans and Mexican culture. Furthermore, YES, it would be FINE to use a photo or illustration of lynched black people in connection with an article on hatred of blacks in America. Furthermore, such a picture would make an ideal cover for a BOOK on the same subject - such images emphasize a sentiment that the author is trying to convey, whether it is the historical murderous hatred of blacks that many Americans have had, or the myopic stereotyping of Hispanic people that is so prevalent in OC. Let me reiterate: you're a fucking idiot.

Just in case you needed a reminder. You and the others really discredited your position by calling Paul a "fucking idiot."

If there's anyone who's an idiot here, it's the people arguing against Paul. Let's be aware of how the OC Weekly is "read" by the "audience".

First, most of the people viewing the cover will not read the paper. They will only see the racist image as they walk by a newspaper machine or a pile of free papers, and, take it at face value. The image stands alone, and, instead of recalling a criticism about racism, can create the impression that such racist images are acceptable.

Second, most of the people viewing the cover and picking up the paper won't be reading the article. They will be looking through the calendar section for something to do.

Third, and, finally, there are the people who actually read the article, and get the "joke", glaringly obvious as it is. And, it's not a very original joke.

The OC Weekly should have been aware of this, but, they weren't.

Ridiculous Part II

by cliChe Guevara Wednesday, May. 05, 2004 at 4:35 AM

Let's say people do see the cover without reading the article. What exactly does the cartoon say that is just so overwhelmingly appalling and offensive? It's a caracature of Zapata. Is this cartoon going to inspire a sudden increase in racism? Is the KKK or CCIR going to gain a few more members, and action going to be taken with a racist intention? I doubt it. Furthermore, anyone who's trying to change what the media says is a liberal reformist anyway. You don't take on the whole system, you try to change a cover of a fucking ad-supported magazine because it's easy. Also, the OC Weekly has many Mexican/Chicano journalists and photographers employed, and they have continually been sympathetic to us and our cause. ONCE AGAIN, THE ARTICLE IS ABOUT RACISM! You're so fucking pitiful. This is reminescent of those who try to change what is said on television. RACIST CORPORATE MEDIA WILL ALWAYS BE THAT WAY! And you'd rather they be racist corporate media that has a mask on them? A racist organization that doesn't come straight out and say they're racist is ten times worse than an overt one. They're much more dangerous. And you want to spend the time and energy of yourself and others and organize a protest? Pitiful. Find your kicks and feed your self-esteem in a productive way, not just any easy way you can find. Bullshit.

It's true. Maybe if you had read the articles, it would give you a better understanding of what the OC weekly was trying to put forth, but it wasn't really a good idea to put in that type of image. However, no harm was done. Even if it were a racist article/headliner, we must be tolerant to other ideals. I am an Orange County resident, and I know that racism is alive and well in our county. An article on the OC weekly is the least of our problems. Next time, they should be more careful of how they word their preface.

Tongue in cheek...

by maximus Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004 at 1:48 AM

I think I understand what OC was going for - it is a caricature of a "mexican." Obviously, they're trying to be tongue in cheek - maybe even kitsch - I don't know. What is even more puzzling are the words (at the bottom left hand corner) that accompany the weird image. "Our incomplete guide to OC's hatred of all things Mexican." Are they insane? Of course people are going to read this as offensive. What was OC thinking? "hatred of all things Mexican." What if there was a caricature of a "jew" and the text read "Our incomplete ugide to OC's hatred of all things jewish."? OC needs to be smarter? Isn't there anyone at OC concerned with quality control?

''I am going to set up a protest some time this week to let the OC Weekly know they can not blatantly post racist material like this.'' - your going to protest against what, that youre thought of as a wetback by your local newspaper, and the people that produce it and read it? with that at best you can hope for them to not say what they think. better to stop production of OC weekly, without a bomb thats hard to do but you can disrupt distribution. how to do that is obvious.

''Writing an article about racist hatred towards blacks and having a picture of a lynching is NOT a racist activity.'' - ask a black person that. if you know any. the image and more so the text on the cover of OC weeky is racist. whether or not the hip liberals that wrote it understand that it is, is unimportant. as unimportant as the what the hip liberals its written for opinion is.

so protest OC weekly, beg and stomp your feet on every street corner, wave signs at the bizinessmen as they drive past you. and do this everytime an article or inappropriate cover like this is produced. you can turn it into an annual gathering. or,do a google search on 'molotov cocktail'.

I notice that Josiah Hagen, a psycho originally from Virginia and a former employee of CyCorp made racist statements about Mexicans above. Here's a document about Josiah's most recent employer Isilon Systems. Seems Josiah likes to work for shady companies.
