Terror alert: Benetton in Argentina Benetton evicts Mapuches

The multinational Benetton owns massive amounts of land in Argentina, more than 900.000 hectares. Most of this land is situated in the south, in Patagonia, and used to be land of the indigenous inhabitants (Mapuches) that lived there long before Benetton or the Argentine State even existed.

Some Mapuche families have been trying to fight back and to live and work on the land. They have been evicted by force. At the moment Benetton is starting a court case against one Mapuche familie that refuses to be thrown off their own land. Extensive information can be found on the website:

...crude pics by some know-notjhing from a country run by narco-terrorists.

It's to be expected, tho. The Big Dog always has little pebble-poopie rat-dogs yapping at its heels.

I thought so

don't make me have you humiliate yourself again. Have some coffee and then pour some warm water over your head. You'll feel better. Unless you have a whorl pool bath like in most well equipped mental health facilities.

notify the media. I'll hunker down in my well known location while I contemplate my failure and the coming tidal wave of shame and self pity.

the spectacle of multiculturalism

by more rational Sunday, Apr. 18, 2004 at 10:18 AM

Benneton is imperialist multiculturalism.

Back in the 30s, liberal whites, including ethnic whites rising up in society, focused on American multiculturalism as something uniquely democratic.

In the 60s, Blacks and other people of color reclaimed their voice, and fought for their rights as Americans, and also as international people in a global fight against European domination.

In the 70s, multiculturalism became institutionalized in public service and government jobs. Then in the 80s, it became a priority in corporations, as industries globalized, and internal marketing required people competent to sell products to "minorities." The roots of a new, corporate multiculturalism were growing.

In the late 80s and early 90s, after years of conservative dominance of politics in both the political parties, queer groups revolutionized grassroots organizing, and created identity politics. People of color involved in identity politics reasserted themselves. Class politics took a back seat.

In the new millenium, class politics reasserted itself, but this time, a little more conscious of race issues. Figures like Colin Powell, Condi Rice, Norm Mineta, Ward Connerly, and Linda Chavez are trotted out by the Republicrats, not just as "tokens" but to establish a new multicultural conservative front.

Class politics reasserts itself in the anti-Globalization movement. Activists for internal colonies in the US attempt to connect the two issues.

Has multiculturalism been taken over by imperialism?

The Benneton hegemony is about affluent consumers feeling good about themselves for understanding some of the pain of the oppressed in the Global South. They are selling the feeling of sympathy with clothing, and subverting genuine sympathy.

The Benneton hegemony is about unifying the multicultural people in the multicultural core of western society -- to purchase products. Colors magazine informs the reader about global conditions, but also reassures the American/Western European consumer (of all colors) that they are above the global conditions.

The flow of goods, and the total amount of waste involved, is an expression of the power of the West. Clothes are produced in the poor countries for pennies, sent to the US and sold for dollars. The overstock and used clothes are sent back to the poor countries to be sold cheaply, again in the bazaars.

The flow of people, and the amount of poverty created, is an expression of the power of the West. US immigration laws in the 1950s was altered to restrict immigration by poor people to the US. Basically, it was stopped. Skilled workers, especially technical, medical, and intellectual workers, were invited in. In 1965, racial restrictions were amended, and an influx of talent from all over flooded into America. Doctors, engineers, etc. If "ER" were accurate, half the characters would be Indian and Filipino immigrants.

Simultaneous to this international brain drain, neoliberal policies immiserated the Global South, increasing unemployment by "developing" economies at a rapid pace, displacing farmers and destroying agricultural economies.

Someone should send Willie Nelson on a Farm Aid World Tour for all the farmers all over the world!
