3.20 anti-war demo in Seoul, S. Korea

by KCTU/ETU-MB Monday, Mar. 22, 2004 at 11:17 AM
migrant@jinbo.net

March 20 at least 5.000 people, mainly unionists, students and last but not least migrant workers protested against the ongoing occupation of Iraq and government's plan to send additional 3000 combat troops to Iraq.

MSSC struggle report (04/03/20)

While all over the world only few people protested against the ongoing aggression in Iraq – “several hundred protested” in S.F./Ca/USA according to Indymedia L.A., in Berlin, Germany, around 1000, but in Munich, also Germany, hundreds of fascists demonstrated against the war and the “Jewish occupation of Palestine”, London, Madrid reported nothing – here in Seoul a big event was going on. After 2 pm we, MSSC and several hundred supporters (THANX A LOT!!), made a opening rally in Marronier Park in Daehak-no. At 3 pm the main anti-war event started and thousands – leftwing media reported 5000 - mainly unionists, student activists joined. During the rally we sold t-shirts, made propaganda for our struggle and had many interesting discussions with Korean activists. One of the main issues was the impeachment of Roh. It was interesting to listen to really good ideas, but later we’d to learn… After the rally we marched through downtown Seoul to the direction of Gwanghwa-mun. Here already thousands – police said 125.000, so let’s say more than 200.000 - were protesting against the impeachment against Roh. But instead to use the broad audience for propaganda for our issues, the majority of the demonstrators just sat down and participated. Only few groups, like one of our solidarity group, used the possibility to make propaganda against the system at all. After all, yesterday was a great day, but only if we understand to use (carefully) situations like that. For example many of them who participated yesterday are complete against sending troops to Iraq. So, why we can’t bring them to the point to tell this the government? Right now this movement can change a lot, but this movement – even 500.000 will take the streets – can be also complete meaningless if they don’t demand loud and powerful real changes.

When we wrote the article we'd no correct information about demos outside S. Korea. So, later we'd to make a correction: Anti-war protest in other countries: Roma/Italy: according to police several hundred thousands, organizers said 2 million people joined the demonstration London/GB: 100.000 Madrid/Spain: 200.000 Tokyo: 30.000 Athens/Greece: 7000 Madrid London Bern, Switzerland Roma, Italy

FIGHT FOR RELEASE GUPTA, SAMAR, K.B., HAQ AND ALL OTHER MIGRANT WORKERS FROM DETENTION CENTERS! FREEDOM FOR ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS IN S. KOREA! LET’S FIGHT TOGETHER FOR A WORLD WITHOUT EXPLOITATION AND OPPRESSION! ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE, ONLY IF YOU WANT AND FIGHT FOR IT! WE’VE NOTHING TO LOSE EXCEPT OUR CHAINS!
