by Marcus Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003 at 11:44 PM

Saturday at 2 p.m., at the Vons at Barrington and Santa Monica Blvd, about 80 UCLA students came to a rally, in support for the Vons strikers. Thirty grateful strikers chanted '' thank you for your support. Thank you for your support. Thank you for you support..." (far below a 40 seconds video)

Look it up!

Your comments are very humorous, considering that anyone attending UCLA has a GPA of 4.2 or higher. With parents like you, I doubt your kids (I feel sorry for them if you do have them) will ever even get close to the intelligence needed to go to a UC School.

I'm smart and you're not

by julie Tuesday, Dec. 02, 2003 at 7:52 AM

I'm smart. I know it. I'll tell you why.

I'll attack people for living in a dream world, and attack society and call it defunct. It's because I'm knee buckling brilliant. I fully realize that after millions of years of evolution we should have had Utopia by now. I'm an adolescent asswipe, so self absorbed that I'm the first one in the history of mankind to just know beyond understanding that Peace Is Possible, and every other living thing is so stupid, likefer shure.

As long as our minds depend on ancient physical bodies which are hierarchal and territorial and hungry then Peace is the Big Lie. But since I'm in the 5th grade I'm too freaking stupid to realize that. I cannot handle life exactly how it is.

But I don't care. I know what's right, and everyone else is wrong. It's a good thing that genies aren't real, and that I don't rule the world, because I'd be one of the most dangerous creatures to humanity.

I'm a self absorbed bedwetter, and my name is julie. Somebody please hear me. I'm a god, intellectual beyond comprehension.

Jeez

by fresca00 Tuesday, Dec. 02, 2003 at 8:32 AM

If this whole embarrassment isn't full and unadulterated proof of "protest as mindless hobby" than I don't know what is.

It's so laughable to see these completely naive children trying to "take a stand" with a bunch of bottom rung wage earners simply because they are "on strike", as if simply being on strike, no matter how foolish the reason, is enough to make heroes outa them.

Oh well. These kids are just that. Kids.

Try to understand

by Don Tuesday, Dec. 02, 2003 at 9:21 PM

Because you think the students at UCLA don't know what it's like in the real world, you call them children. They have a better understanding than most people know. They know that this Lockout/Strike will set a precedence for all Companies/Corporations who negotiate with any Bargaining Unit/Union across the Country. It will be a deciding factor of their probable future earnings, and whether they will have any benefits with those earnings. Why do you think this has lasted so long? It's not because of stupidity. It's because one by one, all the other labor unions across the country are sending money to the strike fund, to show support for the locked out/striking workers. They also know this will determine their future contract negotiations. Most of the people who've paid for their medical benefits throughout their careers work for smaller entities. The majority of huge corporations do pay for their employees medical plans. The thing is, most huge corporations also pay their employees well. The supermarkets do not. Regardless of what the Supermarket reps say, the majority of union grocery employees earn between $8.00 and $10.00 an hour. On top of this, the majority of workers are only given 20 to 30 hours a week. There are very few employees granted full time status. And most of them were, or still are managers. A job that pays an whopping $20.00 a week more than their co-workers. The other lie is that the workers will only be paying a small portion of their premiums. What the chains don't disclose is that the employees are expected to pay these premiums, while having the benefits they currently have be cut by 50%. All this while also freezing their wages for 2 years. If wages weren't being frozen, and benefits weren't being cut in 1/2, paying a portion of premiums wouldn't have been such a major issue. Additionally, because grocery employees work odd hours and shifts, the majority also end up married to other grocery employees. One of the major reasons college students are joining the protests is the 3rd tier the companies want to add. There are presently 2 tiers, so workers hired after a certain date are paid less, and given less benefits. This proposed 3rd tier will make anyone hired after this point, earning close to the poverty level no matter how long they work for these chains, while giving them virtually no benefits. The majority of newer hires will need to receive government assistance to make ends meet. All taxpayers will need to absorb the cost for this. Sound good to you? It doesn't sound too good to me.

thanks for understanding

by nai Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004 at 1:10 PM

All I can say is thank you for understanding. I'm one of those "children" from UCLA, and most of the "children" have families that have been locked out so we understand. Some of our peers don't comprehend either, and it's nice to know someone does and is willing to defend us and their own beliefs. Thank you.

UCLA

by Nai Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004 at 1:23 PM

Why did this have to turn into a racial matter? These students are a coalition of student groups at UCLA, including Concerned Asian Pacific Students Alliance and Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance as well as Conciencia Libre, Muslim Students Association, and MecHa. As well as many more. This is a universal matter because healthcare is diminishing for all sectors. So please try to keep your prejudices out of this. Thank you.
