200,000 MARCH AGAINST BUSH IN LONDON

by peace dove Friday, Nov. 21, 2003 at 6:36 PM

An effigy of Resident George W. Bush is pulled down by the people during a massive protest in Trafalgar Square, London. The U.K. Mirror reports up to 200,000 people joined the anti-war demonstration. The protestors were mimicking the pulling down of a Saddam Hussein statue in Baghdad by invading U.S. troops during the war to occupy Iraq (Photo by David Bebber/Reuters)

A massive demonstration against George Bush drew up to 200,000 marchers on the streets of London today. Organisers of the march, ending in a rally at Trafalgar Square, said the number was a record for any weekday protest in Britain.

With a huge police presence the Met reported no incidents of violence and the march passed off peacefully.

"This phenomenal response shows the depth of feeling of the British public towards this visit," said a spokesman for the Stop The War Coalition.

The march started near Euston Station and went past the House of Commons and Whitehall before finishing at Trafalgar Square. When the march passed Downing Street anti-war protesters booed and jeered at Bush and Blair inside number 10.

A huge papier mache statue of Bush was hauled down by protestors in Trafalgar Square in protest at the Iraq war.

Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic, on whose life the film Born on the Fourth of July was based, was the guest of honour. Other speakers at the rally included former leader of the SNP Alex Salmon and Labour MPs Jeremy Corbyn and Alice Mahon. Former Labour MP George Galloway spoke to the crowd and described the march as "unbelievable". He said: "This is the largest march on a midweek day that this country has ever seen - it is absolutely overwhelming.

"We're speaking for the majority of people in the world who want Bush out and who want Blair out."

"Tony Blair added insult to injury by bringing this ignorant, foolish and dangerous man to these shores and I think we are speaking for the majority of the country."

Caroline Lucas, of the Green Party told the crowd: "The eyes of the world are on Trafalgar Square today. We are making history."

The UK has 60 million residents. Only 200,000 showed up. That's only 0.003% of the population, or only 3 in a thousand.

If 12 million had showed up (20% of the population), that would have been mildly impressive. But only a relatively handful actually cared enough to even come out, further demonstrating that these people are the frindge and are not to be seriously considered. And for that reason, they won't be.

How many would have showed up for a pro-Bush demonstration? Well, probably, the Marine Corps guards from the US embassy, some US sales representatives in London to get accounts of Pepsi Cola and Chesterfield cigarettes, the still living members of Margaret Thatcher's cabinet, various Mossad agents, and Britney Spears if she was there for a perfomance.

That's not what we conservatives do. We don't demonstrate. That's strickly a left-wing thing, it's what you people do. So there's no comparison there.

Instead of demonstrating, we make things happen. Clinton is doing stupid stuff, we eliminate the problem and undermine his ability to do anything. That's not something that liberals are even capable of considering and planning, much less implementing. You people, you carry signs and dress up in funny looking costumes and march and dance around, break a few windows, wear a bandana or two on your face, and then call it a victory. Did you actually change anything? No. Same result these idiots in London and Miami can expect, nothing. You dolts haven't a clue.

BUSH IS STUPID OR INCOHERENT SAY 70% OF BRITONS

by Blue key Friday, Nov. 21, 2003 at 11:16 PM

The full extent of the low regard Britons have for George Bush revealed in a Saturday poll.

The US President was branded a threat to world peace by a clear majority, 60%, of those questioned by YouGov.

MOST BRITONS CONSIDER BUSH STUPID - 37% or INCOHERENT - 33%

More than one in three, 37%, said Mr Bush was "stupid" while 33% called him "incoherent".

VERY FEW HAVE A POSITIVE IMPRESSION

Only a minority saw positive characteristics in Mr Bush, with just 7% regarding him as a good world leader, 6% as articulate and 10% as intelligent.

MOST AGREE WITH ANTI-WAR PROTESTS

There was sympathy with anti-war campaigners who plan a series of protests to mark the visit with a majority of 53% to 41% supporting the demonstrations.

The antipathy toward Mr Bush is matched by a gloomy view of Iraq.

A majority said Britain and America were wrong to go to war with Iraq

45% to 43% in April voters were in favour of the war by 66% to 29%.

73%, expect the security situation to get worse while only 15% believed that things would get better in Iraq with just 18% saying the country's future would be as a peaceful democracy. An overwhelming 70% thought there was little hope for the people of Iraq and that it would be a permanently unstable country.

There was little faith in the President's ability to handle the continuing problems in Iraq.

24%, had confidence in Mr Bush on Iraq, while 74% did not.

Prime Minister Tony Blair fares only slightly better:

38% express confidence 59% do not.

If anyone had any doubt how far the current administration had fallen in the esteem of the World this poll should erase all doubt. Britain is America's closest friend and supporter in the World. If the British hold Bush in this low esteem you can bet the view in the rest of the World is worse.

Bush needs to go and he needs to go now.

YouGov surveyed a representative sample of 1,934 adults, online, on Thursday and Friday, November 13-14.

1.5% (Use London's Population)

by DJ Friday, Nov. 21, 2003 at 11:19 PM

Why would a percentage be computed using the population of England? Using the population of London would be more practical. London has approximately 7 million people.

100,000 / 7 Million = 1.5% (approx)

To me this is pretty impressive, considering how many people probably couldn't make it due to having to go to work or school, or other reasons. Of course warmongers aren't impressed...

The deeper disturbance is this: If this many people are upset in England... then imagine how many people are upset in other countries. England is supposed to be our strongest ally.

It's seems ridiculous to argue about maths and percent of national population. There were huge numbers demonstrating against Bush and hardly any flag-waving outside Buckingham Palace. When hundreds or even tens of thousands march against something, it's foolish to simply dismiss it.

And once again, we have to put up with suggestions that those who oppose Bush must support Sadam Hussien. And more totally inapproriate Communism analogies too. This idea of 'either agreeing with Bush or supporting terrorism' is something that the US government whipped-up and fed to Americans - please don't expect others who aren't subjected this to think on these terms.
