Tell Alhambra to Support the Strikers

by johnk Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003 at 6:40 AM

Support strikers in the SGV. There's a resolution up at the Alhambra City Council tonight that needs your bodily support.

Please forward this to the folks you know in Alhambra and the SGV. There are two issues - showing up to support the resolution (tonight, Monday), and the community strike support organization listed at the bottom of the email (Tuesday).

ALHAMBRA CITY COUNCIL RESOLUTION

Efren Moreno, Alhambra City Councilperson, has introduced a resoultion which will come before the Alhambra City Council on Monday, November 10th.  The resolution urges the Grocery Companies and the Union to negotiate in good faith and is similar to one recently passed in the City of Pomona.  Anybody and everybody is urged to attend the meeting to show support for the resolution. The council generally has a 3-2 conservative vote history but one or more Councilmen could be swayed to vote for the resolution if enough public pressure is placed upon them.  The meeting starts at 7PM and is at Alhambra City Hall, 111 S. First  St., Alhambra, between Main St. and Commonwealth.

City Hall phone # is 626-570-5007.

                    --------------------------------------------------------

60% of the strikers are women, many of them single mothers. 75% of the strikers work only part-time.  Many earn less than an hour.

Their employers want to implement measures that will amount to a 50% cut in medical benefits.  And they want to slash wages for new employees, thus creating a new "second class" of employees.

This strike affects not only the grocery clerks.  It impacts all of us who are campaigning for decent health care benefits and decent wages.   A victory for the grocery clerks will give ALL of us more power.

Please join us Tuesday, November 11th, 7:00 pm,at the Community Room at the Monterey Park City Hall, 320 W. Newmark Ave., to discuss how we can best support our sisters and brothers on the picket lines.

For more information, call 626-289-3573.
