Luna Tierra Sol Evicted

by John Kawakami Saturday, Nov. 01, 2003 at 11:21 PM

Got this via email passed around. Luna Sol is being evicted. Go and support them by partying, and let's hope that the next one opens soon.

I just got the message below from my man Pocho Joe. I have too many fond memories of Luna Sol where its at. Many of you know that the first incarnation of 33 1/3 was a successful near 3 years of weekly poetry slams at Luna Sol Cafe.

Pocho Joe Wrote:

...I am so sad to pass this news along:  According to Dez, Obi and Tito, the co-owners of Luna Sol Cafe, they will be closing the doors on Sunday, November 17th.  They have been evicted from the building.  This is something that has been a possibility for a very long time.  Luna Sol has had TWO electrical fires in the past two months and still the owners didn't want to fix anything and they were also complaining about the music.  So even though Luna Sol wasn't ready to leave, they decided not to renew their lease until all of the repairs were made.  So the owners evicted them.  Dez says, "This is not the end of Luna Sol.  Luna Sol is not a building.  We just need to regroup and find a new space.  It's a blessing actually."

During the next few weeks, PLEASE GO SUPPORT.  It's one of the most down-to-earth locations in the city, serving some of the best (and most inexpensive) vegetarian food.

They are having a huge DIA DE LOS MUERTOS event on Friday, October 31st at 3pm.

There will be music, poets, vendors and a Dia de los Muertos procession through the park.

Luna Tierra Sol Cafe

2501 W. 6th Street

(betw. Rampart & Alvarado)

weekdays 7am-10pm

weekends 9am-10pm

don't go!

by Federico Garcia Lorca Tuesday, Nov. 04, 2003 at 2:50 AM

Shit. First it was Midnight Special in Santa Monica, now Luna Sol. All the great radical cultural landmarks in LA are disappearing! This country is going to hell!

that totally sucks about luna sol--

but! midnight special is re-opening at a new location this week! i think november 4th is their opening day..

the new space is really near the old location, on second street, just south of broadway. 1450 second street in santa monica. i helped them move in some books one night a week or so ago and the space is great-- bigger and better than before. plus they have a nicer much nicer community space in the back.

so go support midnight special!

i'm from houston and i was visiting my boyfriend this past weekend in la. i was lucky to experience the auora of luna sol. it is a damn shame that a place like that is closing down. they might be able to shut down the physical space, but the spirit will live on. ya'll will find a new spot to make that yummy food and keep the jive going on and on there in la. so from houston, much love, and good luck!

To everyone at Luna Sol. We love you guys and wish we could be there for the celebration today, but we found out too late. We'll see you soon, and of course, will support you all any way we can for the new move. Blessings for the future of Luna Tierra Sol Collectiva! Peace and Love.
