I try to shop half the time at places with unionized staff, and the other half at smaller ethnic stores, and sometimes at ethnic supermarkets. Of course, I know that the ethnic supers are not unionized at all -- in fact, they pay far worse than the big chains. (Assi, for example, is one of these, where conditions are substandard, the company exploits workers without documents, etc.)
I've heard that Stater Bros and Gelson's are considered ok to shop at, but there are none nearby (and, Gelson's is expensive.)
BTW - Pavillion's is Vons. I think Food 4 Less is Albertson's.
So, what are the options?
Alpha Beta - is that around? Farm Fresh Ranch? Superior? El Tigre? Beach's?

Here is the reason for the stike in the first place: http://www.forbes.com/business/newswire/2003/10/12/rtr1106543.html "Grocery store baggers covered by the UFCW start at $6 per hour while the most experienced workers who oversee departments make about $17.90, Andreder said. The average wage is between $12 and $14 per hour, she said." If you remove the Union from the picture, then the costs incurred by the company because of greedy Union deals made in the past, and the cost of being IN the Union are no longer paid by the workers. Wages can go up, and health care costs can go down. Personally, I find the idea that a bagger at the grocery store can make $12.00/hr is disgusting. It should be a minimum wage job reserved for students....not a "real" job for a father to support a family on. There must me motivation to get proper education and raise the bar for generations to come. Make it very uncomfortable for those who choose to drop out of school or to become parents before getting a proper education. Im going out to shop at Vons right now....just to rub it in.

I generally support peoples attempts to make a better living. However, I'll still be shopping at Albertson's for groceries, and so will everybody else. There are very few options. Which brings me to the importnt point. The strikers job skills take about 20 hours to learn, eighty hours to learn competently. How much is that worth? Probably less than they are already being paid. They have very little leverage, and very little time. In two weeks a scab replacement will be able to do the job just as well for less money. Better to swallow their pride and get back to work than expect the union to support them.

Take up the chains and attach them to your wrists. Give up your self-detemination and allow someone born with more money to make decisions for you. Do not question or even seek to question how the caring altruistic monster of corporate greed and bottom line politics will take care of you, your helth, or your life during your twilight years.
The capitalists will always care for you, and treat you just like a good pet. You are born into a class and you must always remain there.
Why would anyone want more than this!

Similar logic entails getting rid of the shareholders, owners and other elements of the capitalist structure. If we got rid of profits, dividends and CEO's salaries, then prices would go down as well.

Pardon me? The Unions are a parasite. Their sole purpose is to supposedly act as a middleman...as a "single voice" speaking on the welfare of its members. BULLSHIT. They are a money making machine using extortion against corporations who were unfortunate enough to get caught in a Union contract that they have now become a slave to.
A= employee B= employer
A works for B, but then "C" comes into the picture (the Union) with promises and a big stick. A must now pay C for "membership", while C drives up the costs incurred by A, until A can no longer stand it. The only scenario left for A is to file Chapter 11 and start all over again. Its a vicious cycle, and the time of the Unions is OVER. These arrogant strikers hold signs which say that they have been "locked out". In reality, the Union has locked them out, not the employers. Does the Union plan to pay their wages? Lets see some figures on the income of Union bigwigs, huh?

Do you want to do their job? These people do a job that most people don't want to do, the least they deserve is a fair wage and benefits. We have unions to protect the workers against corporations. Sure a scab can come in and do the job, but where does it end? When do these people get the benefits and pay they deserve? Corporations will get away with what they think they can get away with, until we tell them "No!" I don't know about you, but I work for a living, and I'm willing to support the employees by not shopping there, as long as it takes.

I had their job at one time. At that time I was in high school and community college. I made alot less money at that time then these people make now. I wasn't planning on working there my whole life. It was a better job than I had previously at Burger King. If you set your sights on a job at Von's, don't expect alot of compensation. It's not a bad job, but almost anybody can do it. These strikers have very little leverage. I shop at Albertson's because it's convenient enough for me and the prices are affordable. Do you want to pay more for groceries? I'm a consumer and I'm looking for the best deal I can find. These folks aren't working in a sweatshop. They need to get back to work, and you need to get a tighter grip on reality.

If you people only knew how good you had it working inside a union. Those of us who don't have to take up for this kind of mess that is currently underway. Thanks a whole bunch.

There are definitely people who were born into a family with money. But the reality is, the people who are at the "top," so to speak, making the decisions are there because they have worked HARD along the way -- going to school, staying out of trouble, getting at least one degree and taking on responsibility. In the grocery industry for example, those at the top cannot just be replaced at a moment's notice by an unskilled and uneducated person. In contrast, the courtesy clerks and stockers in the grocery store could easily be replaced by high school and college students who would not even ask for 100% health coverage. The management is under a lot of pressure from consumers, competition and stock-holders to be profitable. Workers are just stuck there because they didn't work hard enough early on to be qualified for something better. Now really, who's being greedy?

Fuck all of you non-supporters! It's really ashame how you guys take this grocery strike as a joke. Do your homework! Hello people, but the media does not tell you the entire truth! Didn't your mother ever tell you that everything that you see on tv is not real? Why in the world do you think that these corporate fucks won't comment for interviews and periodicals? Because what you're hearing is not the exclusive truth! They definitely do not want to be held liable for any slander. If those of you that aren't supporting had a strike for your own, you would want everyone to support your strike too! Open your eyes and realize that Vons, Ralphs, and Albertson's will be back to normal soon. Shopping at another store is not going to kill you. If I'm wrong, then I promise that you can hold me responsible if you die. Haha GOOD LUCK!

What do you college educated piece of shit maggots think about THE BUTCHER THAT CUTS YOUR MEAT FOR YOU, THE ONE THAT YOU DEPEND ON TO GIVE YOU THE RIGHT INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT TO USE,HOW TO COOK ,AT WHAT TEMPERATURE,AND FOR WHAT DURATION OF TIME? Should we have to take a cut in pay, give up our Helth Care just because we didn't go to college and get the education that are mommys and daddys couldn't provide for us. Next time your in the store think to YOURSELF with all this education I have I can't even cook to save my life! I'm sorry to the pepole I have ofended. I'm just keeping it real.
