UN Bombed After Welcoming Iraqi Governing Council

by Mario Bolo Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003 at 4:28 PM
MacArthur Park, LA

United Nations Headquarters Bombed, scores dead and wouned, political motivation suspected

Less than a week after the United Nations Security Council overwhelmingly approved a statement that "welcomes" the formation of the Iraqi Governing Council, a massive bomb exploded at the UN Headquarters in Baghdad.

The BBC is reporting at least 15 killed, and scores injured in the afternoon blast.

One of the casualties is Sergio Viera de Mello, the UN's envoy to Iraq, who had recently declared the Governing Council to be "broadly representative." The BBC is reporting the bomb went off "almost directly under the window" of Mello's office.

However, the assertion that the US appointed council is "broadly representative" contradicts fact. It is well known that only 3 of the council members are women, in a country that is approximately 55% women. More than half of the council members are exiles or Kurdish leaders (that have existed in Kurdish areas outside Saddam Hussein's control). One of the exiles is Ahmed Chalabi, convicted of embezzlement and fraud in Jordan, and a Pentagon favorite.

Further, the council is politically unrepresentative of the Iraqi people. A political science professor who was part of the process of forming the council, has noted that its "members were appointed by the Americans as a reward for aiding the occupation". In the same article Iraq Occupation Watch has reported that "while Paul Bremer has veto power over the council, he may not have to... The word 'puppet' is in the air."

In contradiction to the decades long US record of bombing, economic strangulation, and more bombing of Iraq, President Bush has responded to this latest bombing by saying it " would not intimidate the civilised world from assisting the Iraqi people to reclaim their future."

How did the truck get through?

by Meyer London Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003 at 5:01 PM

From what I understand from news reports, the US forces were responsible for guarding the hotel which housed the UN people. Sounds like the security was a little, er, lax. What if this had been the headquarters of the US military, and Bush and been inside visiting? Can anyone imagine a driver with a truck full of explosives getting close enough to drive it into the lobby? I wonder if the apparantly lackadaisical

behavior of the US military in this case wasn't a not so subtle message to the UN? A message that said don't interfere in Iraq or this is what you get for not approving our aggression?

Trillions upon trillions of us have taken to the streets and have made it known that we won't take it anymore, and still they will not listen. We loot, we burn, we destroy property and still they do not listen. We write, we chant, we play songs of peace, and still they do not listen. How many more marches must we have until justice and peace comes to pass? It is time for action! The time is NOW!! Let's sit around and talk about it.

I'm not sure if any of the 50 seniors gathered were actually listening to him or simply picking and scratching themselves waiting in anticipation for their weekly game of Bingo. Ashcroft fit right in with this crowd as he gave his propaganda message. He pointed out that we should all be afraid and let him tap our cell phones and peek into our bedrooms so the US could hunt down "terrorist" or anyone else who disagrees with the Bush Administration, and not to worry about our Civil Liberties, because we really don't need them anymore. Theres only us or the terrorists. After his speech he sat down for a game of bingo and cookies and punch. No reporters were allowed in to ask any questions

Beyond the fact that there is no evidnce that anyone has even BEEN incinerated, I think it's fair to say that the fact that these savages continue to attack and kill our soldiers while committing suicide is a sign that they probably lean more towards the cult of stonage islamic hatred and murder than they do towards civilized and humane thought.

Too bad you passed out at the sports bar last night; you missed the announcement that you had won the drawing. Your prize is a pair of the late Dale Earnhardt's boxer shorts, suitable for framing in your living room. You will be the envy of your neighborhood in Bakersfield. In addition, you get your choice of a bumper sticker that says I don't brake for animals or one that says kill all Arabs. As well as the first inspectors being intelligence agents to discern Gulf War II targets have not made any new friends.
This bombing seems to me to be a new strategy to keep the relief forces from taking over the management of resource extraction and to send a rather loud signal that anyone attempting to facilitate the relief of U.S. troops will have the same gun sight on themselves.
No garlands of flowers as well as WMD, it appears.
Is there anything we haven't been lied to about?.

"U.S. investigators probing the bombing of the United Nations' Baghdad headquarters focused Friday on the possibility that former Iraqi intelligence agents working as guards in the compound may have assisted the attackers, a U.S. official said.

[...]

The United Nations' security guards were selected by Saddam Hussein's regime before the war and reported on the movements of U.N. staff at the Canal Hotel compound, which served as a base for weapons inspectors. The United Nations continued to employ the guards after the war. "

what parts of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program were you expecting to fine in Iraq that hasn't already been uncovered? Other than say the chemical weapons which the US and East Germany sold him.

I highly doubt you supported going to war in Iraq, because of WMD. You simply trying to hide your lies and UN lies about 500,000 dead Iraqis and 600,000 Iraqi refugees, how the "Arab street" would rise up against us, and all the other BS you fed us in order to justice the right of France to buy Iraqi oil while giving Saddam weapons. Thankfully more people have died in France then in the Iraq since we told them to piss off, who says god doesn't have a sense of humor.

Now the UN is starting to see that Iraq is stabilizing and progress is being made, so they are trying to get a "crucial" role for the UN. As if the UN has a better reputation in Iraq then the US does now, HAHA In reality the UN is trying to get credit for fixing Iraq while not having to get its hands dirty. Guess what Bush told them, "Go fuck yourself"

By the way, the Red Cross is scaling back its operations in Iraq, because helping the Iraqis would mean taking risks. I am getting sick and tired of you lefty's bad mouthing American soldiers putting their lives on the line to help Iraq, only because you are too much of a coward to do the same. “Risk my life to help someone else, hell no, I am out of here” – most liberal scum that has since fled Iraq and come home to daddy

WTF is that about a human shield facing 12 years in prison for going to Iraq. The American justice system is shit, and unfair. The appropriate punishment should be reduced to making them stay in Iraq for 12 days wearing a T-shirt that says "I was a human shield" now that would be justice. Unless international activists would fear this because they know this would be a far worse fate …

The Iraqi death toll is less then say Canada's murder rate. Have the Canadians to starting rising up, because if Canada invades the US we could be in big trouble to right?

As for my lack of compassion for the French, if their families can't be bother to come back for vacation to claim their bodies, or check in on those at risk, until say the smell starts to bother them. Well I wouldn't say I was being cold about, I would say I was just being French about it.

I don't like third world countries pretending to be world powers when they can't even protect their own, and they wonder why we don't want to leave the UN, ie EU ie the French and the Germans in charge of protecting the world?

The EU is a paper tiger and the UN only works when all five veto power members agree, ie never.

the Arab street is a joke, notice the massive street protests before they invaded Iraq, then when other regimes realized if they didn't play ball they would be next, and oh my god, the street protests stopped overnights, as if the Arabs were against attacking war, yet not the occupation. Oh is there maybe another force behind the scene pulling the strings. In fact Iran mullahs have resorted to claiming that the US supports them to encourage their population to stay in check. With the BBC playing right along, how come there was/is almost no coverage of the Student protests in Iran, I guess its party because Muslims asking for US intervention sort of distorts the myth of Muslims hating us because they are racist crap your press tries to force down our throats.

What should we do about the oppression in Iran? Oh wait we don't have to do anything because once upon a time we did wrong and fixing it would be Imperialism and every lefty knows two wrongs makes a right

Oh second though, I like your logic, France started the Indian-French war so we can bomb Paris today!!

Sound just too outrageous tpfk? Don't take my word for it. Do your own research. Google Chalabi, contracts, INC (for Iraqi National Congress). By the way, if you include the number "700" in your Google search, you'll find that the Pentagon flew Chalabi and 700 of his henchmen into Baghdad just as it fell. Then ask yourself, is it that our government is pushing Chalabi IN SPITE of the fact that he has lived in London since 1958 (that's 45 years. since he was, like, 20!)? Is our government selling us this Chalabi guy IN SPITE of the fact that he is a sworn enemy of most of the governments in the region (where he faces multiple criminal charges)? Does Cheney, a millionaire via the energy industry, favor Chalabi IN SPITE of his grotesque trading of the future of Iraq's resources for the promise to install him as the new Iraqi ruler?
