Increasing attacks have killed more than 23 U.S. soldiers and wounded dozens more since Bush declared major combat over on May 1.

Agreed

by art critic Thursday, Jul. 03, 2003 at 8:05 PM

I didn't support the bombing of Iraq or the war against it. I don't support the U.S. occupation of Iraq. Bush lied... there are no WMD's. It WAS all about controlling Iraqi oil and the world.

However... Latuff's cartoon conveys none of that. It can even be construed as applauding the death of U.S. Soldiers. All those G.I.'s need to be brought home NOW! They are not to blame... and while some of them may be "just following orders"... it's the RATS in Washingting giving those orders who are to blame for all the destruction and woe.

Bring the troops home now! End the occupation!

Oh... and Latuff, how about taking some sensitivity training?

the point of his art is...

by x Thursday, Jul. 03, 2003 at 8:17 PM

to shock the shit out of you -- of others -- to get people thinking

it works

I remember when I first saw that cartoon with the Santa shot and bleeding, the caption being "Christmas, Israeli Style"

My first reaction was, "shit, that's really going overboard." About a week later, it sunk in that the power of the art was in fact that it made such a digusting reaction in people.

the world is fucked, with fucked things going on...... don't blame the artist showing reality

blame (change) the reality

yeah

by rtf Thursday, Jul. 03, 2003 at 9:51 PM

I don't think Latuff shouldn't focus on being more sensitive. He should stay focused on delivering nothing more than reality, and that's what he's doing. Reality can sometimes hit us with emotions because it stays suppressed. Art like this brings it out from under the rug and puts it smack in your face like a shocking wake up call, and that's what we need, people to be shocked out of their complacent thinking habits and the doctrine of american ignorance.

Metaphors

by Point Friday, Jul. 04, 2003 at 5:46 AM

It's a great metaphor for what's happening to the United States. . .And as far as it concerning actual "boots on the ground," I'm sure the Iraqi resistance would much rather target our head chimp, but he's not there. . .The G.I.'s are simply the closest target. Maybe they will figure it out, hopefully sooner than later, a la Vietnam.
