An ongoing question first publicly floated by the Collier Brothers and their Book "VoteScam" has been just how honest, or dishonest, are our elections? With the advent of Electronic Voting Machines with no Paper Trail the question has become even more relevant.
This is an ongoing development. I just ran into this this morning and I think it is important enough to give further dissemenation. I do not vouch for the accuracy of the claims made although they seemed plausible to me when I read them. A group of intrepid Hackers appear to have cracked the Diebold Voting Systems “Back Door” code which enables elections to be rigged wholesale. The import of this is not to be understated and the courageous of the individuals following this important line of enquiry is to be lauded. Needless to say that if this is a valid report their are people who would no doubt kill to keep this secret as it represents a major major scandal. More than that it throws the legitimacy of elections in as many as thirty states into question. Enough of my thoughts. Here are a couple of links to follow this story up on your own: 1. Democratic Underground Forum. This is where Bev Harris of Black Box Voting Broke the Story. Details are sketchy so far but if it is as represented this is some very BIG stuff. Has some interesting debate and exploration of the issues and implications of breaking this code. http://www.democraticunderground.com/duforum/DCForumID70/1995.html#6 2. Black Box Voting Web Site. Lots of good information on how elections are stolen electronically: http://www.blackboxvoting.com/index.php

Good one, Diogenes. We can thwart these bastards with an absentee ballot. Now we need a candidate.
On October, 10, 2002 I
posted an article on the web,
revealing that Republican Senator Chuck
Hagel has ties to the largest voting
machine company, Election Systems &
Software (ES&S). I reported that he was
an owner, Chairman and CEO of Election
Systems & Software (called American
Information Systems until name change
filed in 1997). ES&S was the ONLY
company whose machines counted
Hagel's votes when he ran for election in
1996 and 2002.

I would like to differ on one point.
Absentee Ballots are still subject to tampering as they are opened and counted away from public view.
It is more difficult to steal an election that way but it can be done given Crooked Bureaucrats under the Thumb of the politicians.
Better, I think, is the method suggested by the people over at Votescam but it would take changing election laws.
1. Use Paper Ballots marked by hand in Ink.
2. Ballots are then counted by hand at the Precinct. This is doable because the average precinct has only about 750 Registered Voters not all of whom Vote in every election.
3. Select Ballot Counters in each precinct by a Random Drawing like selecting a Jury Pool.
4. Ballots are counted by hand and tallied by a different person who is watched by a third person. Not all of which can be from the same Party. If it is a Large Precinct you just increase the number of teams to the level needed to count everything in about 2 to 3 hours.
5. The counters are paid for their work say 100 Dollars for the evening.
6. Tallies are transmitted by secure means to the Election Central.
7. The Paper Ballots are retained for a minimum of 180 days from the election and then destroyed.
This system would be much, much, harder to corrupt.
It is a little known fact that the benchmark standard used to compute accuracy of electronic vote stealing systems is a hand count.

serialized ballots that record the votes which are published
in order for the concerned to check against the stub which is kept for verification
The published tallies could be available on line. For instance:
#17339701 ballot would have the record of choices and voter #17339701
could independently verify that the selection was recorded and accurate.

"Absentee Ballots are still subject to tampering as they are opened and counted away from public view. "
Sorta like how all those write in votes from overseas servicemen ( heavily favoring the Republicans) were stricken in Florida.
Good point.

To Sheepdog: It would work. I still would have some misgivings given the sloth of the average voter how many would check?
And it could still be circumvented by publishing the correct ballot data while still falsely recording the tally. You could not get away with creating a Landslide that way but in a close election you could probably shave enough Votes to change the outcome.
One other point I forgot to include above was that each person would have to sign for their ballot. It makes it harder for the dead to vote that way.
To frescaw: Piss off. I'm not going to rehash the Florida Election Results. There were irregularities on both sides. It's even possible that Bush stole an election that he won.

... having foreign observers supervise the next US election.
Just like in Third World countries that fail to uphold basic democratic standards.
No?

...your logic is as good as your spelling.
I said plausible and I meant plausible. It is not completely in the open yet so I withhold final judgement.
That does not mean voting machines are either reliable or honest which is what you are trying to imply in your dishonest post.

...is in order too. The dead bodies of the Bush Junta are beginning to develop that certain odour. It is the Rot of high corruption and base motives.
The Sycophants who continue to support this Rotten and Vile excuse for a Presidency are take a River Trip - up Denial.
And the Electronic Vote Fraud Machines are still not to be trusted.
Paper Trail Printout makes it a little better but it still allows for too much slop in monkeying with the Tallies.
Hard Copy Paper Ballots are the hardest to cheat with proper safeguards in counting.
More cumbersome? What cost freedom? I think we can afford a little inconvienience to provide for an honest election. Computerized does not mean better. It means Computerized.

Life is precious to us all on this journey
Inside all of us a love that gives exists
Brevity of life demands we find our inner peace
Everyone must do their part for their fellowman
Remember those who have gone on before
Always caring for others before self
Love that had no beginning and no end
Sharing truth with those around us
Always pressing onward towards tomorrow
Reflecting on the peace we strive onward
Ever inching closer to our goal
Simply wanting a better world for our children
Others may jeer and jest at our motives
Saying things to tear and break us down
Truth cannot be quiet
Upon the mountains and in the valleys we shout
Peace to all and love for all mankind
Inside us all is love’s abounding message
Deliver us all to hope and peace and love.

Can you believe the voting machines are rigged? Why, this is worse that the Chicago Machine. We must do something to stop this madness. The American people deserve to have every vote count. Some people who vote the way they should should be counted 2 or 3 times even. Let's sit down and discuss this.

...get an honest Vote Count is to DEMAND it. And keep demanding it, and voting against anyone who does not support stringent standards.
There is only one reason they would not. Crooked.
This is an issue that transcends Party affiliation.
VoteScam.org was started by a couple of died in the Wool Liberals, it is now run by a Rock Ribbed Conservative.
We do have common ground. Honest elections should be one of those grounds common to all citizens.
One person one vote one time.
If you aren't outraged you aren't paying attention.
