Nobody wants to just "cut down trees to prevent forest fires" but the cutting of low lying brush and growth, which the enviromentalists typically don't understand and therefore rail against, is a much needed and obvious element of fire prevention.

Believe me, I'm no fan of the logging industry, nor am I in any way suggesting that they are going to do ANYTHING solely to help the environment or prevent fires.

The low-cutting is another matter. Obviously, if you're going to cut down the whole damn forest, then there's no point to it.

Helping prevent fires through "lowcutting" is NOT the same as letting the timber companies run amok.

If it was implemented it would be done by whatever agency oversees conservation I suspect.

ok lets see ... to the person that was talking about cutting down trees to prevent forest fires you should study before you say a word first of all it's called thinning the trees that would be cut down are already dead so what good do they do? the only thing they contribute to is making forest fires spread faster. and if you had the brains enough to study that you would have known!!

The logging industry has no 'thinning' in mind. It's not profitable to remove the under growth or few dead logs unless they're dead because they have been cut down. Even when the logging roads are paid for by public treasury as they are now.
the industry has no current constraints against the use of clear cut.

I am no fan of George Bu$h, but i recently did a report on this low-cutting and forest fire prevention. The only trees that are removed are already dead, and brush is removed to prevent fires. The government does this, not private loggers.

But if you wanna bitch about bush, then talk about how many clean-air regulations he has cut back on.
