Afghanistan, Now Godforsaken

by Cloak and Dagger Monday, Jun. 23, 2003 at 3:07 PM

The government headed by Hamid Karzai still controls just part of Afghanistan's territory. So-called field commanders who consider themselves heroes for overthrowing the Taliban regime have distributed the authority among themselves. It is not ruled out that only thanks to field commanders the regime was overthrown.

Afghanistan, Now Godforsaken - 06/21/2003 12:26

US's campaign in Afghanistan obviously ended in a failure

News reported from Pakistan might be funny but it is rather sad indeed. Customs officials in Peshawar discovered about one ton of hashish in a batch of 271 washing machines that was to be send to Saudi Arabia. The origin of the drug is quite obvious: Afghanistan.

The Taliban regime was overthrown for about two years ago. Much could have been done within this period since the regime was done with. However it seems that none of the previously designed plans was put into practice. Talibs were not completely crushed and from time to time they organize sorties.

Recently, a 20-kilo bomb was found near the house of Afghanistan-s minister of defense; fortunately it was discovered and neutralized before detonation. A group of terrorists attacked an American military camp in the province of Uruzgan. The attack was repulsed and over 15 bandits were taken captive. There were no casualties among American soldiers. This attack is one of the numerous ones committed over the past several months.

The government headed by Hamid Karzai still controls just part of Afghanistan's territory. So-called field commanders who consider themselves heroes for overthrowing the Taliban regime have distributed the authority among themselves. It is not ruled out that only thanks to field commanders the regime was overthrown. Let's take General Rashid Dustum for instance; the man belongs to the anti-Taliban coalition and leads the Uzbek community in Afghanistan. All efforts that the central government made to control the local "princelings" failed. At that, the central government doesn't use force (in fact, it doesn't have any). It happens sometimes that the field commanders cannot be tempted to take governmental posts. Indeed, they don't find governmental positions in Kabul really attractive while control over a small province may guarantee wonderful life for them. Experts say that this year's yield of opium poppy will be unbelievably high in Afghanistan.

This may be a rash conclusion, but it seems that the Afghan campaign of Americans and their allies is almost over. At that, the campaign ended in an absolute failure. The same way as the government of Hamid Karzai, the coalition troops control just those areas where they are stationed. There are lots of problems with appropriation of financial aid to Afghanistan although much has been spoken on the issue. The country in its integrate form no longer exists: Afghanistan has split into dozens of semi-independent districts. In fact, now Afghanistan is in focus only when Talilbs organize another act of terrorism there. Is it possible that problems in Afghanistan are paid less attention to because there is practically no way to settle them?

Sad Commentary

by Cloak and Dagger Monday, Jun. 23, 2003 at 3:09 PM

It is a sad commentary on the American Fourth Estate when one must now consider Pravda a more reliable News Source than the American Media.

What a pile of crap

by Bush Admirer Monday, Jun. 23, 2003 at 3:17 PM

That's not a news report. That's a pile of crap.

The left refuses to admit that we've got a great President and a great administration.

This on the heels of the failed presidency of Bill Clinton.

Pathetic.

Bush didn't lie

by Bush Admirer Monday, Jun. 23, 2003 at 3:55 PM

Dio - You've worn out your welcome with that Bush Lied, People Died tag line. It's bogus just like most everything that you post here.

Bush didn't lie. He's a stand-up guy who makes every effort to shoot straight.

The number of people who died in Iraq because of our military action is likely less that the number who would have died had Saddam stayed in power.

Why do you continue to support Saddam?

Tepid and lame B.A....

by Diogenes Monday, Jun. 23, 2003 at 4:01 PM

...your tired old PR Spin Line of trying to equate opposition to Bush's Mass Murder with support of the Brutal and murderous Regime of Saddam Hussein is long since worn out.

It is possibe, and provable, that one can oppose both.

Bush is proven a LIAR by his own, and his minions repeated LIES and the current attempts to sweep them into the dustbin hoping people won't notice.

I, and quite a few other people, are not going to allow that to happen without a fight.

BUSH LIED, AND PEOPLE DIED.

BUSH LIED, AND AMERICAN BOYS DIED FOR HIS LIES.

Bush and his apologists are blot upon the honor of this Nation.

You need to take a course in Logic Dio

by Bush Admirer Tuesday, Jun. 24, 2003 at 3:29 AM

Is it true that you would have preferred we not have a war with Iraq? (Yes)

Would Saddam still be in power if your preference had been followed? (Yes)

Are you still complaining about the US invasion and toppling of Saddam's government? (Yes).

Must you like the guy and approve of Saddam to support his interests? (No. Supporting him means advocating actions that work to his benefit).

Would Saddam's position align with yours re Bush actions, US involvement, and preferred outcome? (Yes)

Do you think Iraqis were generally better off under the Saddam dictatorship than under the present US/UK interim government? (Saddam)

Do you think Iraqis will be better off in the long run because of US/UK intervention (No)

Are you, therefore, a Saddam supporter? (Yes, obviously you are. If it waddles like a duck, quacks like a duck, flies like a duck, then it just might be a duck).

Thanks but I have taken more that 1 course in Logic.

by Diogenes Tuesday, Jun. 24, 2003 at 5:57 AM

Faulty Logic begins with a faulty Premise.

Your argument is invalid because you chose to base it on false Premises.

False Premise 1: That the only way to dislodge Saddam from power was Gee Duhbya’s attack and massacre operation.

False Premise 2 (Implied by your argument): That the purpose of the Big Iraq attack was for the purpose of freeing the Iraqi People from Saddam’s Rule.

Neither is sustained by your argument which takes off on a tangent from these invalid assumptions.

There are corollaries which can be extracted from these premises and your arguments structure but it is not necessary to do so at this time so being basically lazy I won’t. (Actually I prefer to consider myself efficient.)

So, for false premise 1 there is nothing to support this contention. Your failure to offer it any support is a prima facie case for it’s inadequacy. There is in fact no basis upon which to make that argument as there were no other methods seriously tried. It was merely the quickest and, given the turmoil in current Iraq, by no means vindicated.

False Premise 2 totally fails the sniff test. At no time prior to the discrediting of the argument that we must immediately attack Iraq and remove from Saddam’s vile clutches the nonexistent evil Weapons of Mass Destruction® (2001 The White House) did the concept of “Liberating the Iraqi People” surface as a justification for Duhbya’s War Crimes. These were of course the very same Weapons provided him under the auspices of the Reagan and Bush I Regimes. At no time prior to the desire to acquire control over the Iraqi Oil Fields did the U.S. Government take any action to sanction or deter Saddam’s Brutal Regime. The regime installed with C.I.A. connivance. And again as it has been pointed out ad nauseam by other posters the U.S. Government has, and continues to do so, support regimes every bit as despicable as Saddam Hussein. Whatever the reasons for this war they were not based upon a Humanitarian Premise.

Using VALID LOGIC the conclusion is virtually forced that the stated reasons for attacking Iraq and deposing Hussein were not for the reasons stated for public consumption.

We can thus infer that the real reasons for the Iraq Attack were such that the American Public would not have supported with their Children’s Lives and Honor.

BUSH LIED, AND PEOPLE DIED. It really is that simple.

Bush A$$ki$$er

by Brian OConnor Tuesday, Jun. 24, 2003 at 9:38 AM

B.A.,

You don't have an ounce of creativity in your whole body. You steal your style from us, and then regurgitate it back at us with your spin on it. But what you don't understand is that words come from inside ourselves, not outside. We are not sponges like you. We can create out of thin air and imagination, the latter of which you lack.

Keep pushes your trash, though. It provides a great sounding board for the rest of us and provides insight into the hapless, crippled mind of the opposition.

See you on the streets!

"Create out of this air"

by palindrome Tuesday, Jun. 24, 2003 at 10:09 AM

Leftists pride themselves on the fact that they can argue that "day" is "night", and then call themselves "creative".

I get it now. Every time we've ever called them "idiots", they thought we were complimenting them.

To Brian OConnor & Diogenes

by Bush Admirer Tuesday, Jun. 24, 2003 at 4:08 PM

How Funny.

Dio weaves and bobs - dances really - pats himself on the back and dodges my points. He's out of ammunition and completely whipped. His logic is really illogic.

Brian OConnor claims to have creativity but shows no evidence of that. Brian has no arguments to present so he resorts to insults.

The left is oh so pathetic.
