‘TORTURE PICTURES’ SOLDIER ARRESTED

‘TORTURE PICTURES’ SOLDIER ARRESTED

By KANCHAN DUTT and TOM NEWTON DUNN

A WAR CRIMES probe was launched last night after a British soldier was arrested when “torture” photographs of an Iraqi prisoner were discovered.

The pictures are said to include the PoW dangling from a fork-lift truck and allegedly show troops performing sex acts near their Iraqi prisoners.

Sources said the squaddie was part of the 1st Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, one of the Desert Rats, and was picked up by civilian police while on leave at his home in Tamworth, Staffordshire.

Senior army officials believe the Iraqi was alive when the snaps were taken.

Police were alerted after the soldier took a roll of film to a local photo shop.

Disgusted staff phoned police after seeing the developed snaps. One of the pictures – taken in southern Iraq at the height of the war – showed the PoW bound and gagged peering out of netting suspended from the truck.

It is not known whether the arrested soldier had taken the pictures.

The revelation comes after news that Col Tim Collins, famous for his inspiring pre-war address to troops, is almost certain to be cleared of mistreating Iraqis.

An MoD source said: “Just when we thought we had weathered the storm over Col Collins, this happens. There will have to be a wide ranging inquiry.”
