Airwaves abuzz with Hollywood blacklist; no secrets this time

"Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, whose anti-war comments got a Baseball Hall of Fame event in honor of Bull Durham's 15th anniversary canceled. And please don't forget the Dixie Chicks. All of a sudden, making contrary or outre political comments isn't only not OK, it's a punishable offense."

Airwaves abuzz with Hollywood blacklist; no secrets this time

By Laura Berman / The Detroit News

In his TV commercials for telephone giant MCI, actor Danny Glover is appealing and likable. He's honed to perfection the character of a trustworthy buddy, a genuine guy.
But Danny Glover's image is under revision. It's being revamped on cable TV and talk shows that portray him as an un-American creep who deserves to lose his job for speaking out against the Bush administration.
His is the latest name on the new Hollywood blacklist that's being compiled by high-tech bullies trying to work a two-fer: drum up ratings and drown out dissent.
Round 'em up: Sean Penn, for doing Saddam Hussein's PR in the month before the war broke out. Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, whose anti-war comments got a Baseball Hall of Fame event in honor of Bull Durham's 15th anniversary canceled.
And please don't forget the Dixie Chicks.
All of a sudden, making contrary or outre political comments isn't only not OK, it's a punishable offense.
On Wednesday, operators at MCI took calls all day long from viewers of MSNBC's Scarborough Country. The show's host, Joe Scarborough, a Republican ex-congressman who goes for the jugular, encouraged viewers to urge MCI to cancel Glover's contract.
He even flashed the telephone number on screen, so viewers could "demand that MCI get rid of him."
Glover may be the guy you'd turn to for help if a covey of Columbian drug dealers had you cornered in a deserted warehouse, and he's the kind of guy you listen to when he's pitching phone service. But is he really someone whose political views you heed?
Americans are insistent in polls that they don't listen to actors spouting politics. By smearing their public images, and publicizing their political views, talk show hosts like Scarborough taint the actors' work -- and make us less comfortable watching them.
Scarborough characterized Sean Penn and Glover as "anti-Bush." And so far as I know, being opposed to the president -- any U.S. president -- has never been considered cause for an American to get fired.
Scarborough and other talkmeisters, like Bill O'Reilly, insist that there's a price to be paid for free expression. I agree with that.
But the airwaves are alive right now with the code words used so effectively during the red-baiting era of Sen. Joseph P. McCarthy and the 1950s blacklisters.
It's been 50 years since Hollywood's top actors, writers, and directors suddenly stopped working after being branded as political untouchables. And, golly, the vocabulary of "loyalty" "patriotism" and "anti-American," that was used so effectively and notoriously to end people's careers is making a resurgence.
Scarborough likes to trot out Jon Alvarez, the founder of something called Patriotic Americans Boycotting Anti-American Hollywood, a title that conveys the congenial spirit of the group.
Liking the president is not what I'd consider a qualification for an acting, or public spokesperson, job. Certainly, people like Scarborough weren't keen on backing a popular president when he was a Democrat named Bill Clinton.
The old Hollywood blacklist was a secret, a document composed of whispers, based on rumor and innuendo. The new one is blasted over the airwaves, not the least bit secret. But its intent -- to silence debate by costing people their livelihoods--is just as insidious.

Blacklist?

by I. Reilly Friday, May. 16, 2003 at 11:05 AM

Are any of these assholes going to PRISON for speaking out against the Bush Administration? Passports lifted? Banned from the set? What?
No. What is happening is that lots of people are sick of their bullshit. Just because they are ACTORS, and can speak well inpublic, we are supposed to listen to them? I don't think so, and as a result I (not the Federal Government) am not spending any of MY money on anything involving them, and more I am letting networks, sponsors, whoever, know it. Janeane Garofalo's new sitcom? I won't watch it, or anything on the network, and I'm letting them know it. The Left Wing? Stopped watching it. Dixie Chicks? Naked pictures and all, I'm done.
This is what I am doing, and a lot of other people as well. If these celebs don't like it, maybe they should just keep their traps shut and just do what they get paid for. It's not censorship, it's spending my own money where I see fit.
If you lefties out there don't like Arnold, or the two or three other conservative celebrities, than please feel free to do the same. It's a free country isn't it?

I. Reilly: What's giving these people heartburn is the fact that while the leftist spokesactors are spouting the party line, the rest of us have the unmitigated GALL to criticize them for it. We're not rolling over like we're supposed to, and that's really irksome.

Remember, these people say "Listen to me" but actually mean "Agree with me totally RIGHT NOW! Anything less and you're oppressing me!" Disagreement is tantamount to a repeal of the First Amendment. And don't even think about holding them accountable...remember, boycots are only allowed against right-wing interests. You can't use the left's weapons against it.

There is a difference...

by Diogenes Friday, May. 16, 2003 at 11:24 AM

...between disagreeing with someone and countering their arguments and attacking their livelyhood for daring to speak something you do not like. It is one thing when you as an individual choose, out of principle, to not patronize someone because you find their speech objectionable and another when you have an organized campaign to retaliate against them for a political difference of position.

davemoron says:
".but don't feel they should have to face any consequences for their actions!

FREE SPEECH YES! ACCOUNTABILITY NO!

And remember: A Screen Actors Guild card automatically confers upon its owner a perfect understanding of history, foreign affairs, and armed conflict."

No it does not as you so absurdly illustrate. However, American Citizenship does confer the right to hold an opinion and to state it publicly regardless of whether you wish to walk over them with your Jackboots or not.

The resolution is one of those...

by Diogenes Friday, May. 16, 2003 at 4:49 PM

...razors edge difference.

Clear Channel is an organization which holds a unique position - it has a license to "Broadcast in the Public Interest". While it would be unconstitutional for the government to practice "prior restraint" upon them and prohibit any manner of speech not in violation of their charter, when they abuse that position of trust to curry political favor and to damage another person's livelyhood merely for holding a position they are in opposition to the fundamental principles of free speech. One does not have the right to shout "fire" in a crowded Theatre when there is no fire. When Clear Channel advocates upon the airwaves, and let there be no doubt that their Talk Jocks say nothing not within the party line, active retaliation against an individual for speaking then they have crossed the line and are no longer deserving of the normal treatment. Had Clear Channel limited their position to only disagreeing with and castigating individuals for their position they would be within their rights to disagree however, they have gone beyond that point and actively advocated violence, and financial retaliation. In another day and age Tar and Feathers would be appropriate. As that is foreclosed as an option turnabout is fair play.

Want to provide a link to prove your allegation?

While you're at it, provide one on this 18,181 votes in 3 elections BS. I highly suspecious of someone who claims such things and then tells others to "look it up".

You just don't seem to get it, do you?

Let me explain it to you in a way that even you can grasp.

You're sitting at a workbench with a variety of work tools around you; screwdrivers, hammers, pliers, vice grips, adjustable wrenches, etc.... In front of you is a 4x4 block of oak wood with a 8" nail having been started into the block. Your assignment is to drive the nail into the block. After looking over all the tools to find the appropriate one to use, and determining that every tool in front of you has been rigged by COINTELPRO, you reach into your pocket, pull out a paperclip, and start tapping away.

Oh sure, given time you can drive the nail with a paperclip. But by the time you finish, the rest of us who had the same task used the hammer and are on to more important things. And in the end, you're left realizing that the hammer was what you should have used all along. In the meanwhile, someone driving a nail with a paperclip is a running joke.

We're laughing at you and your ilk here. There's nothing you say that we take seriously. You haven't given us any reason to do so. Now if you can't handle that, if you don't like that, it's not our problem. But we're here, and we're going to continue to laugh and make fun of you. You're all wastes of oxygen. You're good for nothing else BUT to laugh at. So keep doing what you're doing. But get over this notion that we or anyone else of any significance cares what you believe. That's just not going to happen.

"I highly suspecious of someone who claims such things and then tells others to "look it up". "

As well you should be. If you hang around here long enough, you'll figure out that that's Dio's MO. Nine times out of ten, if you go "look it up", you find out that he's full of BS.

But that tenth time! Well, that one's a keeper!

Well said,

...handleit.

Of course, all the regulars here are firmly convinced that anyone who makes fun of them is really working for the government, and are actually afraid that IndyMedia is exposing the TRUTH.

The TRUTH being, of course, that there is a vast Right Wing/Zionazi conspiracy responsible for the dismantling of the Constirution, the destruction of the WTC, fluoride in the public water supply, and the heartbreak of psoriasis.

The fact that IndyMedia's continued existence is a perfect refutation of the conspiracy theory totally escapes them, and is a source of great amusement to me.

...and I put stuff on the table because I WANT people to look and think for themselves.

This is a discussion board not a Journal. If you want to disprove my commentary then present your FACTS.

I find it amusing that the people who most frequently try to accuse me of playing fast and loose with the facts rarely present a fact based rebuttal or links of their own in refutation. As in the case of "handleit" of is that more correctly "Gauleiter" reductio ad absurdsum to work requires that you start with a valid premise.

As for davies cavils - the uniform spin presented by the vast majority of Large News organizations, unfortunately, dwarfs the small potatoes debating we do on this Board.

However, your side has a problem - every time someone is forced to stop and think and realizes that the facts do not support the official spin one more person joins the "Conspiracy Cult" of free thinking individuals. They may remain or they may not. Depends on how courageous they are. And it does take courage to disagree with the Bleating Herd.

POIO

Let's go back. the quote from Diogenes was:

>>I can recall reports of Clear Channel Talk Jocks encouraging people to run over peace activists. A few nutcases actually did it. I recall one account of a Semi Truck Tractor running into a crowd of peaceful demonstrators.

The article you quoted made no mention of Clear Channel at all. Also, given the reporters obvious political leaning, I have every reason to doubt it didn't happen the way he reported it.

ooooooooooooo

>Let me explain it to you in a way that even you can grasp-
oooooo, so condecending!

I talk to people the way they deserve to be spoken to. You don't like it, that's not my problem.

Don't find it amusing. I explained very clearly that I was here to make fun of you and your political beliefs. I have yet to see you present any "facts" that can be regarded as reliable. Should you ever swerve into that realm, and it's a subject worth discussing, some of us make take you up on it. Until then, .................

I've given you the benefit of the doubt and you should be happy about that. Somewhere in your life, someone played a horrible trick on you and told you that your opinions were worth considering. And to make matters worse, you actually believed them. Self-delusion will keep you exactly where you are now. It's where we derive our laughs from you and your ilk. And that's what we're all counting on. Keep it up.

How many times I gotta repeat it until it finds its way into that grey mush of yours? I'm doing you a favor. Your friends would sugar-coat it for you. I'm being blunt for your sake, not mine. You say nothing worth refuting. You believe what you have to say is important. It's not. You personally are an insult to the human race and will receive in return what you project.

Get this through your head. You're here for our amusement, nothing more. The sooner you realize that, the better off you'll be.

No one worth considering cares about your 911 theories. No one worth considering cares about your Bush is Hitler theories. No one worth considering cares about your solutions to the Israel/Palestinian issues. No one worth considering cares about your twisted ideas regarding what constitutes free speech.

Look around you. Your wants and desires are being ignored. They aren't worth considering. The most recent in a long line of victories for the American people and a defeat for you and your ilk: All citizens who pay federal taxes are getting tax relief.

The fact that the Dixie Chicks have 59 sold out concerts goes a long way towards invalidating your entire point concerning 'blacklists' and 'censorship'.

The point of course, which you so carefully miss, is that the sell-out of the tour occurred despite attempts to shut them down for a really very tepid comment for which they have had to do back flips and nudie shots to overcome. Thanks in no small part to the unreasonable Market Control exerted by War Channel (a.k.a. Clear Channel) Communications.

Attempts to silence people are thankfully not always successful but the chilling effect of this kind of attack acts to silence robust debate by making the more timid afraid to speak. It does not bode well for our Republic when dissent is punished by attempts to destroy people's careers.

Your apologia and mea culpa, for the Fascist Tactics of your side ring hollow and unconvincing. As always.

Diogenes what the hell are you talking about?

A middling-talent country music 'star' makes a comment abusing the President of the United States.

The comment is picked up by the media and is thus heard by the people of the United States. These people begin to call radio stations and suggest that they don't want to hear this person's music.

Now how is this different from the various campaigns the Left has championed (including some I've seen on this site) to 'shut down' Rush Limbaugh or Dr. Laura?

The fact is that Natalie Maines made an insulting comment about the President, and she found out that the country music community doesn't much care for that kind of behavior. She 'apologized', and now all is forgiven. She has not been imprisoned, tortured, had her fool tongue cut out, or even been inconvenienced. Her group continues in it's popularity, as evidenced by concert attendance.

Shredded indeed. You haven't the faculty to shred lettuce with a cuisinart.

"

UTTER NONSENSE.

A) SS is clearly correct....The exceptional success of the DC's tour and their massive amount of free publicity (Almost like they knew this would happen...maybe they actually like Bush...hmmmm?) simply proves that dissent is anything but censored and punished. Same with Robbins (invitation to speak at the NPC, mountains of free publicity) Sarandon (More recent mag covers than she ever would have gotten since she's not in a release cycle). The list goes on.
No one has been blacklisted.
After all, who's gonna blacklist them? The lefty Dem studio Execs? I think not.

B) Any use of the buzzphrase Clear Channel shows nothing but a complete lack of knowledge and a willingness to ape any suspicion floated. Clear Channel is like ANY other company. They want to make a buck and they sell, amongst other things, conservative talk radio. The fact that they realize that this is the format which sells at the moment does not make them fascists. The sad thing is that if ever the day came when the crazy talk of KPFK was selling they'd be the first to clone a thousand of that sociopath Goodman.
