"It's just not something we would do"

Iraq Prisoner Report Concerns Watchdog
Sat Apr 26, 7:01 PM ET

LONDON - Amnesty International said it was disturbed by a Norwegian newspaper report that included a photo purportedly showing U.S. soldiers escorting three naked Iraqi men through a Baghdad park.

The U.S. Central Command said Saturday it is looking into the report.

In its report Friday, Oslo-based Dagbladet newspaper said four Iraqi men were detained by soldiers early Thursday after entering a park where weapons were being stored. It said the men were then stripped and paraded through the park before being pushed onto a street.

The story featured three photographs, including one showing a man with the words "Ali Baba - thief" scrawled in Arabic on his chest. The phrase is a reference to the classic tale "Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves."

One picture showed three naked men in the park with soldiers walking behind them. The soldiers were in a shaded area and it was not possible to clearly see their uniforms.

"If these pictures are accurate, this is an appalling way to treat prisoners," London-based Amnesty International said in a statement. "Such degrading treatment is a clear violation of the responsibilities of the occupying powers."

A Central Command spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the U.S. military was looking into the report.

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Charles Owens of the Central Command said he couldn't confirm the report, but if true, the soldiers would be disciplined.

"If they are under our custody, any public display goes against the Geneva Conventions. It's just not something we would do," he said. "That goes against everything we stand for and have been preaching against since day one."

Ignorance and Guilty by Association

by Casual Observer Thursday, Jul. 07, 2005 at 4:51 AM

Just because Ali Baba appears together with 40 thieves in the title of a classical tale does not make him a thief, as anybody who has read the tale knows. Maybe the American soldier(s) responsible for scrawling "Ali Baba- thief" on the chest of that man reasoned that since Ali Baba is an Arab (and practically all Arabs are liars, thieves, terrorists, etc) and since he was found in spatial proximity of a gang of 40 thieves (albeit in the title of a tale) then beyond doubt Mr Ali Baba was himself a thief. The second possible explanation is even more frightening, namely that the soldier(s) knew that Ali Baba was not a thief according to the old tale, but still decided that he actually was, just because they felt they had the power and "right" to do so.

Open your eyes

by Lt. Bighorn Thursday, Jul. 07, 2005 at 7:53 AM

Bush admirer, open your eyes.

US troops have tortured and killed detainees in Abu Ghraib. The International Committee of the Red Cross estimates that 90 percent of the detainess at Abu Ghraib are not connected to "terrorism" or the insurgency, but were picked up for petty crimes or minor offenses such as not having proper documentation at checkpoints.

US troops have related how their unit would save up empty bottles to smash over the heads of civilian Iraqi passerby from their humvees.

It's not at all unbelievable that US troops would strip suspected thieves naked and subject them to humiliation.

You are in denial, my friend.

Fascist?

by God Thursday, Jul. 07, 2005 at 11:33 AM

saying that the bush regime is fascist is true, because they have practised the fundemental teachings of fascism, fascists are those who believe that the sacred entity of the nation itself requires protection and redemption as a prelude to national expansion and greater influence and power. and this has been oh so clearly used by the bush administration. but that doesnt make them the equivalent to the nazis, and i know what you're thinking: fascism and nazism = same thing. not necsesserily though, nazism preached hate mongering, fascism preaches global domination. there IS a difference, tho not a big one. so id have to say that they were bordering on nazism. but thats just my opinion, apart from the definitition of the fascist teachings and how bush has used this political model as a foreign policy, thats entirely true.

Mr

I am opposed to the US occupation of Iraq, but even I am not dumb enough to fall for this photo. The soldiers in the photo may be US soldiers, but if so, they are from the Vietnam war or earlier. Look at the rifles they are carrying - they are obviously not current generation US weapons.
We need to opposed the war because it is based on lies and deception. But we must not become liars and deceivers ourselves in the process.

the photos

by Chop Chop Thursday, Jul. 07, 2005 at 1:05 PM

I recognize the photos as ones that were released around April or May of 2003. Anyone that was paying attention to the reports from the world media around that time should remember the photos.

skeptical

by john r. Thursday, Jul. 07, 2005 at 2:18 PM

I'm no weapons expert, but the Iraqi security
forces have complained of antiquated arms. I doubt
many U. S. soldiers can write in that script. Could
the soldiers be from the Vichy govt. ?

Those are not VN era soldiers...

by 911: The beginning of the end Thursday, Jul. 07, 2005 at 4:28 PM

The uniforms those soldiers are wearing are of desert fighting tone, not the jungle collage you would find on a VN uniform.

There is always a chance a photograph can be doctored, but since this type of conduct has become expected from US military FORCES, what difference does it make? The mark of shame is there in authentic undisputed undullable permenate ink. A scar on what has become America's face. What is fake is the current leadership of this country. Every pretense for anything they have done since stealing the election the first time in 2000 has been a facade. Everyone should be aware of this by now and if you are not you are the type of person that thinks you can cover up smell with perfume, there are not enough deoderizers give it up and take a shower in the truth.

You got That Right.

by Sheepdog Thursday, Jul. 07, 2005 at 4:35 PM

When these gangsters rolled in through fraud and assassination, we should have expected 9-11 and more. These creatures have NO morals or humanity. Their only weakness is their hubris and arrogance.

Photo NOT What is Claimed

by Michael Swinbourne Friday, Jul. 08, 2005 at 6:47 PM
mike_orion@hotmail.com

People seem to have missed my point about this photo. It obviously does not show US soldiers escorting naked Iraqi civilians. I have a lot of experience with military weapons - and the weaqons being carried are definitely NOT current generation US weapons. And the soldiers are in shadow and it is impossible to determine the pattern of their uniforms. If the photo is genuine, then they are obviously soldiers other than US soldiers. Further, most US soldiers can barely write English, let alone Arabic.
The most likely explanation for this photo is that the soldiers are Iraqis.
That does not excuse what is happening (once again, if it is genuine and not a set-up), but we must not oppose the war using lies and deceit - too much of that has gone on already.

Photoshop

by 9:11: The beginning of the end Saturday, Jul. 09, 2005 at 9:46 AM

I took the photo into Photoshop to "brighten" it, the tone became evident clearly "desert tone".

I can not claim to be a weapons expert, but a couple of points here... If someone were going to go through the trouble to doctor a photograph to this degree why wouldn't they use a current picture of soldiers? Are they hoping someone will discover they are fake? It's called "bait and switch" and the reason for it is so that people will then doubt the first and "authentic" released photos of abuse or any authentic ones that may pop up in the future. A deliberate hoax is a classic doubt builder and these tactics have been used by the Bush administration and their cronies already. One example, the bit where Dan Rather was humiliated beyond belief for having used a forged document as proof on nation wide TV was used in this way... Even though it has been known for years that Bush was AWOL for many months, was punished for not having shown up for a physical and all that, suddenly because of the one fake document the general public thinks anything they hear concerning Bush's joke of a military stint is now untrue.

Bottom line, these atrocities and worse are taking place in Iraq and elsewhere in the world at the hands of the US military and others working at the beck and call of the US government, being commanded to do so by those the likes of Rumsfeld. If these photos are fake they are deliberate and the people responsible are none other than those who are by all means guilty of many many real crimes far worse crimes; the US government and allies.
