If Government is So Good - Why Does It Force Us To Pay Taxes?

by fuck off ellen Thursday, Apr. 10, 2003 at 8:41 AM

If government is so good, why can't they operate in the free and open market, and not use force?

If government is so good and so needed by us all, why do they have to force us to pay taxes? Why do they force us to accept their crap? Why do these teachers, so stupid they are dangerous, force us to give them more money? Why do they have to hide in groups and abuse us? Why do they need cops and military to and media to hide things from us? Why do they use our money to hire more and more jails and jailers to control us? People are naturally peaceful. Why does the government have to create chaos because we are peaceful. Government is organized force. The businessman does not use force for us to buy their proeuct. We love their products, so we give them our money. The government has to force us to accept their crap. And it's all crap. And they use our money to harass and intimidate us. If they aren't bothering you, you are the government, the bullies, the forceful ones. Taxes should be voluntary only. Force teaches people that forced sex is okay. That violence, force, is okay. That shooting someone is okkay. Then the government uses our money to teach us propaganda that we are all criminals. And we still sit peacefully sucking it all up and still we are not violence. So the state has to use more and more propaganda to make us unnatural, against nature, which is violent. They use the schools to teach us to be criminals and the church teaches us also. They have to use much force to make us violent! They want us as violent and forceful as they are, so they can get away with their totalitarianism.

Taxes are necessary and just

by Sisyphus Thursday, Apr. 10, 2003 at 10:28 AM

Taxes are necessary:
1. because there are things that the free market cannot provide efficiently, and
2. because redistribution of wealth is a legitimate purpose of government.

The first will be readily recognized as true by nearly all economists and most non-economists. For example, there used to be a system of private fire departments in major cities. These companies would only try to extinguish fires in buildings they were contracted to protect. Of course, a fire in an adjacent non-contracted building, left unchecked, would spread to the protected building. Protecting all buildings could prevent the fire from ever reaching the second building. Under the private system, large portions of major cities were destroyed by fires that were permitted to grow. Additionally, government services to assist the poor could never be paid for by those who need the assistance, thus making it unlikely that the free market could provide those benefits.

The second point (redistribution) is a bit more controversial. However, redistribution serves multiple purposes. As mentioned above, not all government services can be paid for by those who receive them. Thus, taxation to pay for these services will always entail some redistribution. Second, there is a general sense that more equitable distributions make for a more just society. Third, large concentrations of wealth and income have been shown to slow economic growth.

More arguments can be made for taxation, but these, I believe should suffice.

You should be happy about that. You can stop using the Warden's computer when his back is turned.
