"My Country Right or Wrong." Cliff Joseph 1968 Oil on Canvas
blind.jpgyeedag.jpg, image/jpeg, 504x370
African American Artist, Cliff Joseph, was the co-founder of the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition in New York, an Artist's group involved in creating socially conscious artworks.
Joseph's Painting was created at the height of America's war on Vietnam. A stunning indictment of the imperialist war, the artwork also derided the blind false patriotism that gave support to the war effort.
In Joseph's Painting, flag-blindfolded citizens wander through a desolate landscape of crushed skeletons. Gore stains the feet and ankles of the people traversing the endless fields of massacred people. In the background an upside down American flag, a cross, and a Star of David can be seen... a condemnation of all national chauvinisms and militarism.
