US "Patriotism" is a result of Pavlovian conditioning.
In general, it is an American phenomenon to be indoctrinated and conditioned to certain principles at an early age. By being subjected to repeated use of typical American rhetoric, the notions of freedom, justice, democracy and the United States itself, become embodied in the America psyche as positive, righteous and nationalistic feelings. Therefore, whenever anybody (i.e. the President, a college professor, a priest etc) even mentions the words "freedom", "democracy", "justice", etc, a psychological reaction takes place where the positive and nationalistic feelings (imprinted in the minds of Americans through its mental conditioning system) are invoked regardless of the context of the respective situation in which the words are brought up.
The result is what Americans believe to be "patriotism".
Let me refer to a famous experiment that will illustrate my position more clearly.
As part of an experiment, a doorbell of a house containing a dog would be rung. Upon hearing the doorbell, the dog would always come to the door. After the dog came to the door, food would be handed to the dog. This process was repeated numerous times. Eventually, it was discovered that just by ringing the doorbell, one could get the dog to salivate in anticipation of receiving food - regardless of whether it would actually get food or not. In other words, the dog was conditioned to believe that whenever the doorbell was rung, it would necessarily get food.
This is exactly how American "patriotism" works. It is purely reflexive. It is not an appropriate reaction based on logical premises.

Seems only true mental giants like yourself haven't noticed that Americans question their government more than the citizens of any other nation on the planet (except, perhaps, Israel).

Need I say more. Wanna buy a gun?
Oh yes, the Israelis do challenge their government more than the Americans. Do you know why? They can read and write and there are not too many illiterate niggers there either.

The Italians love their government so much they change them like dirty diapers. Now that is what I call a good idea. This one really is starting to stink with the odor of criminal insider complicity and conflicts of interests. My lord, get a shovel so I can take the closepin off of my nose. Sheeeeezz, what a stink from the whiffs coming in, I might need heavy equipment.

To Lionel Swift,
For sure. I agree with you totally. But Americans for the most part only question their government's domestic policies. Because domestic policies have direct effects on Americans, they, for their own good, have to question those policies. The same cannot be said for international policies.

(p.s. I'm being absolutely serious about American "patriotism" and Pavlovian conditioning)

...mistaking the result of years of selective PsyOp influenced Television "News and Entertainment" for how Americans react when they have all the facts.
What you have in the U.S. is a very highly controlled Press in the Main. At least all of the mass market Major media are tightly controlled and operating on an agenda set by their masters. The template is right out of MI6's Tavistock Institute who has been the prime developer of a lot of the large mass manipulation technology. And it is a technology. It is a system that allows the controllers to find and then push the correct buttons to get the desired response. The only remedy, and it is an easy one once you get it across, is to get people looking and thinking for themselves and not reacting. Once a person understands what is being done then they are innoculated against the techniques - which rely upon a trusting and unsuspecting populace. Why do you think the Presstitutes go to such great lengths to discredit anyone who tries to educate people on how they are being manipulated? So, it is a slow process at the onset, but it is building momentum. More people are beginning to wake up. We are in a race against the clock. Either we wake enough people up or we may see the World around us turned into a barren uninhabitable world by these insane monsters like Bush and his controlling cabal.
The result of all this manipulation is the distortion of wholesome Patriotism - which is simply love of country and perverting it into a misinformed (intentionally) Jingoism.
By and large most Americans are a very decent and giving lot. However, too many of our people operate upon false information spoon fed to them and they do not realize it is false information. Throw in a corrupted Government School System which exists not to educate but to marginally educate and condition and you have a very large very misinformed populace.
Someone drawing a conclusion based on false information will arrive at a false answer.
Most Americans do not wish ill on others but add a very corrupt government (let's face it most of our elections are now rigged - and people are realizing this - the numbers voting is declining with every election) and you have a mucking fess.
There is no easy overnight solution.
However, keep provoking, pushing, and demanding that people THINK FOR THEMSELVES.
THINK FOR YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You take that your sources of informatiomn is more correct and without bias and sources of different views are built around falsehoods and lias. Any source of information has to prove it's reliablity based on long periods of coulaberated information. Mian stream news sources are biased to some dagree by business personal agendas of editors and owners. Creditablity is based on fact not conspearcy therioses.. The reciever of news has their own bias that impacter understanding of the information.

To Diogenes,
I agree with you. But personally, I wouldn't go so far as to say that the media is PsyOps influenced. It is more probable that the media conglomerates have found that they can make more money by invoking the reactions in Americans that we are seeing today. After all, who wants to see plain, boring and factual news? Why not twist the story to get them more excited and have them come back for more?
The "conditioning" process, as a whole, is simply a result of a flaw in America's education system that is passed down from generation to generation. For example, I was appalled when I experienced my first "test" at an American high school. As a result of my having studied under the British education system all my life, I was appalled when I found out that the 11th grade history test comprised of multiple choice questions regarding dates and facts. There was absolutely no analysis or thought required. Simply memorization.
However, I do believe that 99% of Americans do not wish ills on other people of the world and that 100% of the ones supporting the war truly believe they are "liberating" Iraq.
Hopefully, American schools of the future will teach Americans to analyze at an earlier age - before people in general become political and allow their predispositions to cloud forever their perceptions.
Sincerely,
The New X

If tomorrow the president said that the US needs to shove toxic waste down the throats of all black people in order to "protect democracy and our freedoms", you can be daaaaaaaaaamn sure that Americans will come online indymedia and say stupid shit like:
"the deaths resulting from shoving toxic waste down black peoples' throats shows that we have to pay a high price for freedom. we are justified in shoving toxic waste down black peoples' throats. i just want to say that i support my government and its decisions"
thats fuckin american mentality. just stupid dumbass shit.
just mention the words democracy freedom justice and "must" in the same sentence, and voila, the american population is at your command.
