Al Jazeera back on the job in Iraq

by Brent Herbert Monday, Mar. 24, 2003 at 1:53 AM

"About 50 Iraqi civilians were killed in coalition bombing of the southerncity of Basra, the independent Arab-language satellite station Al-Jazeera claimed last night. In footage seen across the Arab world, the station aired grisly and explicit images of the dead and wounded, including a child with the back of its skull blown off and blood-stained people being treated on the floor of a hospital." In an unrelated story, an American soldier has 'fragged' three of his officers in Kuwait (using a grenade).

Al Jazeera is back on the job in Iraq, and once again is unlike any other news broadcasting organization on earth, in that Al Jazeera broadcasts the real face of war, you know, like once upon a time, back during the Vietnam War, the American press used to do as well. (The image above shows Aghan casualities of war, while the black and white image, from once upon a time, long long ago, in a land with a less highly concentrated media, shows Vietnam, in black and white, because it was just that long ago).

You might recall how little the Pentagon appreciated those reports from Al Jazeera, and fortunately when the offices of Al Jazeera in Kabul got smart bombed, they were not in the office at the time, but were out on the road doing journalism...

The efforts of Al Jazeera exposed the fraudulent bullshit spread by the Pentagon, as they attempt to make the ridiculous assertion that you can conduct bombing campaigns in urban areas while only harming politicians and other people like that. Shock and Awe would appear to be a dismal failure from what I have seen of it, simply because the Pentagon is not doing Hiroshima the right way, and consequently Iraq is not yet shocked and in awe of the Pentagon and thus collapsing like Japan did in World War 2, and giving up without a fight. According to those who designed that theory of Shock and Awe urban areas were to be pounded 'not in weeks, or days, but rather in minutes' and here the Pentagon is back to typical bombing as in a typical war, while still calling that sorry excuse for a bombing campaign 'Shock and Awe'. Shock and awe it is not, and therefore we can assume that protests and activism have at least spared Iraq (for now) the very worst of the evils of Hiroshima and true 'Shock and Awe' strategy, but however we must remember, that even though the Pentagon has decided not to do the full Shock and Awe thing to Baghdad right away, the target list is spread out all over the city, including residential neighbourhoods, and you just don't bomb cities without people getting killed.

Last year Colin Powell tried to get the Gulf States to shut down Al Jazeera, or at the very least censor them, not the type of thing you would expect from a 'democracy' but then whoever said that the Americans were interested in bringing 'democracy' to the Middle East. Al Jazeera also does other naughty things like showing the Middle East the lawlessness and carnage created by the Zionists in power in Israel, and their policy of theft and extra judicial assasination (to hell with the courts and the rule of law, now Ceasar is going to be judge, jury and executioner, as well as oppressor and land thief). The Americans don't let people see that sort of thing in America, and they also don't appreciate Al Jazeera showing it to people anywhere else in the world...

In an unrelated story, an American soldier has 'fragged' three officers in a tent in Kuwait using a grenade...He was either shell shocked or somehow mentally unbalanced, this reminding one of the waves of wife murders committed by soldiers after they returned from Afghanistan. However he is being reported as the 'traitor' and will probably be shot at sunset, after being roasted alive by the American media...

The efforts of Al Jazeera have resulted in the most popular page on my website, not to mention the most linked to page on my site, Afghan War Photos...

http://www.awitness.org/news/december_2001/aghan_thumbs.html

In the future, I intend to be posting 'Iraq War Photos' as well, and given how at least Al Jazeera is on the job, that should prove to be possible, too...

You can keep up to date on news feed from the peace activists in Baghdad and Iraq at the Electronic Iraq site, which is another alternative to getting reports only from the media...

http://electronicIraq.net/

You can also monitor the body count in Iraq at

http://www.iraqbodycount.net/

I assume they are counting dead bodies and not the injuries, mutilations, lost limbs, etc., that are also a form of collateral damage, and who can 'count' the child trauma and the post traumatic stress disorder in places like Baghdad, which are a type of civilian casualty as well...

You know it is said, as an excuse, that the media doesn't show real war to people, only these sanitized shots of 'surgical strikes' against real estate, because 'people just don't want to see it.' And that leaves open an opportunity for people such as myself, to post what turns out to be a very popular page, much linked to, often viewed, because nature abhors a vacuum

that wonderful Jerusalem post

that wonderful Jerus...
osama_b_caught_on_tape.jpg, image/jpeg, 304x520

that wonderful right wing Zionist rag known as the Jerusalem post could not restrain itself and is now publishing more of that anti-muslim propaganda in the wake of the fragging incident in Kuwait...

Jerusalem Post

Mar. 23, 2003
Report: Muslim-American soldier apparently responsible for US base attack

A Muslim-American soldier has been apprehended under suspicion that he was responsible for the grenade attack within a rear base camp of the 101st Airborne Division in Kuwait, Sky News reports. 13 soldiers were injured in the attack.
Three Kuwaitis were arrested last month on suspicion of planning terrorist attacks on U.S. forces.

The men were described as Muslim extremists who followed the principles of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

On Jan. 21, Islamic extremists were blamed for killing a San Diego computer contractor and injuring another American close to Camp Doha, where U.S. forces are based.

22,000 members of the 101st were deployed Feb. 6. The last
time the entire division was deployed was during the 1991
Persian Gulf War, which began after Iraq invaded
neighboring Kuwait.
Most recently, it hunted suspected Taliban and al-Qaida
fighters in the mountains of Afghanistan. Its exploits are
followed in Kentucky with much pride.

A few words about that Wonderful Jerusalem Post
My local paper has been bought out by the multinational conglomerate that also owns that right wing Zionist rag known as the Jerusalem post. The entire front page of the paper was filled with the gloating face of Osalami Bin Laden, rejoicing in 9-11, even though it was OBVIOUS that this fat actor was NOT bin laden. Ever since that paper was bought out by the right wingers that also run that Jerusalem Post, I have never been able to view my local paper in quite the same way again, and after that disgusting propaganda thing they plastered all over the front page, I have never read that rag since, and I also don't bother with that other propaganda rag known as the Jerusalem Post...

Al Jazeera

by John Gilbert Monday, Mar. 24, 2003 at 6:19 AM

Why doesn't the anti-war crowd scrutinize Al Jazeera with the same eye it does American media? The goal of American media is to draw ratings from Americans. The goal of Al Jazeera is to draw ratings from Arabs. Personally, I think most Americans agree with Powell that Al Jazeera is a propaganda network, but even if it weren't, I would hope you would swallow it with at least the same grain of salt you do the hated American media.

In reality, that question was rhetorical and simply reflects just how far from the mainstream you've strayed. None of the progressive news networks, none of the progressive newspapers, none of the progressive talk shows can satiate your splintering fringe movement. You have to turn to Al Jazeera. That's just sad.

As for me, I've already made my new sign for today's march: "Al Jazeera: Stop Peddling the War!"

idiotic

by bh Monday, Mar. 24, 2003 at 7:41 AM

the last two comments were pathetically stupid, but in particular the last one

Now as for Al Jazeera 'peddling the war' all I can say is that thank God someone is showing more than those sanitzied shots of real estate exploding, and as for 'progressives' who don't like it, you really do have a problem of some kind

as I recall 'progressives' let the Osalami bin Laden scandal go by without any comment. By the way, that really really pissed me off that time. And then there is the old 'don't catch the plane' scandal before 9-11, which once again has just been allowed to slip away. And then there is the 'investigate 9-11' scandal (or rather, let's not then shall we) and that is HUGE failure in tactics and strategy among 'progressives'. One mistake after another is being made here, and others must pay the price, not the 'liberals' in America who can afford to make these terrible errors, because they aren't going to be the people doing the dying or the crying...

as for staying in the ''mainstream' I certainly f***g hope no one does that, except for certain liberals of course, who just can never be found anywhere else, and thus we find the extreme right wing growing in power while liberals sit on soap boxes and whine about it, while missing one opportunity after another,
well pardon my bitching but I am f****g fed up with the 'progressive media'

the campaign to impeach George W. Bush (and some more bitching about the piss poor tactics adopted by the 'mainstream'

now there is a 'progressive site' that I really respect, with their drive for both impeachment and a 9-11 investigation, as well as their caustic analysis of the corporate funding of the gate keepers of the so called 'progressives' media in America...
