We've done a lot and continue to do a lot for the people of the world even as we're branded ignorant bigmac swilling warmongers by the rest of society. Yes we have our problems and yes we have some bad apples the same as everyone else. But for you to blindly (and rather ignorantly I might add) attack the american people because its the popular thing to do right now is disgusting. Do you know how much of our modern society is based off advances made right here in america? Flight, telephones, electric light, computers, the internet, the list goes on and on.
So bush is an asshole. Yes. You know it as well as we do. He is not liked here any more than he is anywhere else. We just haven't figured out how to get him out of office yet, but believe me, we're working on it.
I've said this many times in recent years. Please clarify your anti-american tripe. Americans rock. We are some of the best people around, generally. Unfortunately our leaders are a problem at this time. So if you want to insult someone, insult the bush mafia. You'll get nothing but support from me.
But to blindly alienate all americans as 'evil' and 'ignorant' just contributes to the problem, as well as paints yourself as a total idiot.
"americans are ignorant"... you asshole. We've died by the hundreds of thousands protecting the liberties you enjoy today. Hell this very forum you're using to express your disent was build with good old-fashioned american know-how.
What the hell has your country ever done for anyone anyways?

I would like American people like here on indymedia to get a bigger role in their foreign policy. I believe that our world would be much better then!
So I think it’s time to find something else then the democrats and the republicans since they are really too similar in the big picture. They are bad for both the American people and rest of the world.

Nadia: Yes republicans and democrats both need a good kick in the pants if you ask me. Right out the door would be ideal, although a little unrealistic.
Our government is quite a problem, but to clarify even more, its mostly the federal government. The state and local governments are mostly just trying to keep the ship afloat, and while many if not all do have some problems, they're pretty minor in comparison to whats happening on a federal / international level.
To our international friends unfamiliar with our American political system, we essentially have three governments for anywhere in the USA, the Federal (nationwide), State (one per state), and Local (one per city/county). It used to be that State governments collectively controlled more power than any of the others, but those days are gone, as federal legislation has run rampant.
When you hear people speaking of 'big government', they are frequently referring to a bloated, ineffecient federal government, although that term is sometimes used to describe an excess of state and local facilities, namely, the police, but also aspects of eduction, healthcare, and welfare.
In my opinion, big federal government is the root of many of the problems in american society today. If we could put more power back in the hands of the state, the diversity we used to enjoy as a nation of 50 states would return. As is, with the current trend towards big government, the differences between individual states shrinks daily.
For example, wouldn't it be great if marijuana was legal in some states? Then the people who would like to enjoy cannibus could do so without fear of legal repurcussions, and those that would rather not have the stuff around them could live elsewhere. Sounds like a great plan to me, a little something for everyone.
And Mr Devoy thank you for proving my point. Americans rock. Even as this mindless prick condemns us for generic, unnamed atrocities to his unnamed european country, you welcome his criticism. Thats true strength. My only suggestion to you would be a little less receptive to unqualified criticism. For people to sit there and blindly yell 'you all suck' is not constructive in any regard.
Perhaps if aintzane could qualify his/her grievances a little more I would be more receptive to them. As is it just sounds like so much mindless socially correct drivel.

Antizane and Co.
Blaming the American people as a blanket statement is a mistake. This site is a direct plea by American people to put a stop to the actions by our own government in the gulf. You should be able to recognize that by reading the contents of the index page.
I agree that we need to pull our forces home and let soveriegn states act as "sovereign" states.
I am not sure what European country you are from. If the United States is in the process of manipulating your country, than I apologize for my governments actions. BUT, there is a point when your government needs to take responsibilty for itself. The parliment and people of Turkey are a great example of how this is done. The have remained strong in the face of President Bush's attempts to purchase their support.
The point is this: If another state is infringing upon your own, both physically (non-military) and economically, it is the reponsibility of your government to politically ask the offender to leave. Most countries in which the United States currently has troops depolyed in continue to allow their presence for economic or security reasons. If this is the case in your country, then you need to buck up to your own government and then accept any economic fallout that may occur. I would applaud this sort of action by more governments around the world.
This does not only go out to Antizane though. American people cannot influence the governments of foreign nations, only their citizens can. Do us both a favor and stand up to your own leaders who continually allow your soil to be at the bid and call of the United States. I will continue to do what I can here. But do not balme the American people to what amounts to your own governments lack of a spinal column.

I wouldn't take Sheepdogs words to seriously... tensions run high here lately, a lot of people doing a lot of name calling, and a lot of americans are sensitive about having our system criticized by outsiders (thus the little lesson in how it works from me). By demonstrating you have a good understanding of whats going on and where the problems actually lie, you can avoid a lot of similar such flames in future posts.
I feel compelled to mention though that in some ways i do agree with what sheepdog said though, not that you're a stupid whatever, you seem nice enough to me, but that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Thus there will never be a 'just' party. Anyone in charge generally got there via underhandedness. I am quite at a loss as to what to do about it honestly.
Our nations founders had a neat idea, it was called the right to bear arms. This guaranteed the masses a supreme 'veto', in that if we ever disagree strongly enough with our leaders decisions, we can drag them out on the front lawn and shoot them :-)
I don't think that is a prudent solution though, at this time. There would be a lot of rebuilding to do, and it'd be messy... probably best to just wait it out and vote him out proper. Then we can begin a real investigation into 9/11, and perhaps shed some light into what has to date been a rather murky topic. Maybe give ol dubya a taste of that gas chamber he's so fond of inflicting on other people with LDs.

This weekends L.A. Times had the audacity to acknowledge the idea we've all been thinking of since the dawn of war- Why don't we just let the two go at it? By two, I mean let the Bush take on Sadam one on one, or even two by two if they have to be sissies. We, around the world, are not on either side of this stupid fence, although Diogenes calls it Libertarian, it would be more accurate to say, faithless. Not faithless in the sense that we don't believe in a higher power, but faithless in a sense that we don't believe man kind will ever be that higher power itself. Therefore, Bush and co. along with every other god toting, suit wearing politicking tick, won't ever have our full faith again. Remarkably, this goes for most of generation Warbuck's, regardless of right or left wing leanings. We have known, for a long time, that the more government we allow, the worse it get's for the populace. We also know, that there are certain things the government does well at, and certain things they don't, ie: the concept of Libertarianism, is to take the powers away from the government that they abuse, and leave them with very few powers like maintaining a food and water supply without selling it out to the highest bidder. As far as making war, we now can see, that the budget director of this country is not into being prudent with our money, regardless of whether we like Sadam or not, they are taking a painstakingly expensive route to oust him. We need something, for our deficits sake, to raise money for American's and Iraqi's alike. It's time, for pay per view.
One on one, Bush on Sadam, Nazi Grandson, vs. Stalin lookalike.
If they want to fight, let us let them fight without the loss of our cutie pie soldier boys whom the strippers in America desperately need for pensions, and the 50% of Iraq's population that are children.
Let us raise more Iraqi scientists, not terrorists, and perhaps without Bush or Sadam, they'll learn to grow food not bombs.
As far as what Americans do, sorry to say, most americans are ignorant to the chain of energy they send out, if you want them to take you seriously, you might trace every step of one day and outline how each day can be an act of conscience instead of subconscious manipulation.

Hi Dog, well this "little" number is an attempt to answer your question.
This ended up being a tad longer than I originally planned but I hope you find it interesting.
First off you have to understand that one of the primary underpinnings of Libertarianism is the desire to remain free and to have a truly free society (as free as practicable). One of the things that scares some people about this is that you have to take responsibility for yourself AND for helping others. You can’t just chuck off the responsibility for helping by saying to yourself “well Social Services will take care of them”. NO, you have to be willing to take a little responsibility for yourself and for helping others. The key difference here between Socialism and Libertarianism is Mandatory versus Voluntary. I’ll come back to that in a moment.
One of the Myths that boosters of Socialism frequently truck out is that unless the government is there to provide a safety net people will fall through the cracks. It is based on a rather mean spirited view of human nature that people will not help each other unless force is applied. As a side note here - my Grandmother took care of 2 mentally disabled sons until she was no longer able to. She never had much money but she got by on my Grandfather’s Pension Money - he had died some years earlier. Every year at Christmas another elderly lady down the street would by her a Ton of Coal for her old Coal Furnace. She never once bragged about it or mentioned it - she just did it. She never asked for or expected a Thank You as that just was not done - it was charity and each benefitted - one by the comfort of doing good the other by staying warm.
Here is where knowing a little history helps. At the beginning of the 20th Century the U.S. had one of the most comprehensive safety nets in the World - privately run and voluntarily funded. Organizations such as "Boys Town", Local Orphanages, Church Run Food Aid for the Elderly (which we still have - Loaves and Fishes), The Red Cross, Salvation Army, (and later The March of Dimes), and many others but many died off when government began taking over "Social Services" in the 20’s and really escalated in the 30’s.
The tradition of Neighbor helping neighbor still runs strong in this country but was even stronger at the turn of the Twentieth Century. If you were family (and that was more extended in definition then - including close cousins as well as immediate family) you helped out the less fortunate members of your clan. Again that fearful monster of taking responsibility creeps in. This still happens and is still strong in more rural communities - but has been degraded by the presence of government agencies allegedly there to help people. It was once very strong even in Cities.
Most of our great Art Museums and Symphony Halls were built with Private Donations from public spirited people who had the money to do it for the community. It was a way of gaining prestige by showing, by digging into your own pocket, community spirit.
What I find disingenuous about the arguments for Socialism is they never mention that to institute Socialism requires the ongoing application of Force. Taxation, confiscation at gunpoint, is robbery if done by a private individual. And never doubt that the force is there. Try not paying your taxes and see how long it takes for the guys with Guns and Badges to show up. It is based upon MANDATORY participation (You will pay and you vill like it) versus the Libertarian view of VOLUNTARY cooperation. When start taking the earnings of one person for the benefit of another then you have begun down the road to tyranny and it does not matter if it was paved with good intentions.
And government Social Programs tend to be very restrictive and inflexible. Anyone who has spent any time observing the way they actually operate learns very quickly that some people “live off the system” and others who are deserving go without help. A private organization can make exceptions as they choose because they are not bound by Bureaucratic Red Tape. As well they, the government, are very inefficient in their use of resources. Based on some of the studies I have read the average government program spends about 70 to 80 percent of it’s budget on overhead. The average, reputable private charity spends 10 to 20 percent of it’s budget in overhead. As is obvious from the numbers the private charity runs much more efficiently and much more of each dollar spent actually goes to helping people. This means more efficient use of resources overall because you can produce the same amount of help with less money input or with the same amount help a lot more people. I could go on and add more depth to the argument but I don’t have time to write a book today.
In brief the viewpoint is:
Socialism = Mandatory Cooperation
Libertarianism = Voluntary Cooperation
As for the taxing matter of the Sales Tax versus our current system. The size of any proposed Sales Tax frightens people because of ignorance. Most people are not really aware of how much they pay in taxes. They don’t think much if at all about all those “little” taxes hidden in the prices of goods and services. Pull out your Utility Bills and look at all the “little” taxes added to the cost of the service by Federal, State, County, and City. Most people when they think of taxes think only of the Income Tax or their local State or City Sales Tax. (California does all of the above.) The Federal Income Tax represents only 1/3 of all the taxes collected by the Federal Government. Where does that other 2/3rds come from? Your pocket of course, but it is Nickel and Dimed away a little bit at a time. There are excise taxes, Corporate Taxes (which are just tacked on to the price of the item as a cost of doing business - that money has to come from the consumer otherwise the business goes broke), “Fees” (for services you have already paid for once) and a multitude of other “little” taxes that when added together represent about 1/2 of your earnings. You now work 5 months out of the year just to pay taxes. There was a German Ruler (I forget which) who commented: “Taxation is the art of plucking the Goose with the least amount of hissing.” P.T. Barnum had another way of expressing it.
The advantage of a Sales Tax is you are confronted with the cost of government every time you buy something. It is also the reason Politicians don’t like it - they like the fact that most people do not really know how heavily taxed they are. Also it is less intrusive and less costly to operate. Every year you have to fill out a form, based on a tax system so complex that you can submit the same data to ten different tax preparers and get 10 different results. Money magazine has been doing this every year and the same thing happens every year. It is tyrannical to have to report to your Master how much you earned and make sure Uncle got “his piece of the action”. This should be galling to a free Citizen. The only way they got the Withholding System through was that it was instituted in the middle of a major War (W.W.II II). Prior to that you had to mail them a check at the end of the year every year. Ask most people how much they make and they will give you the Net after Taxes never thinking abut the money that they earned that was taken before they even saw it.
A 23% Sales Tax would actually be an improvement - you would be paying LESS in taxes. But people get frightened by the number because they are ignorant of how they are already being fleeced. And it would be less intrusive - April 15th would become just another day.
Well, this is already too long but I wanted to get somewhere near a full basic answer. A couple of good books that are written for the Non-Economist are:
“Free To Choose” By Milton and Rose Friedman (Milton Friedman is a Nobel Laureate in Economics.)
“The Road To Serfdom” By the Late Professor Friedrich Von Hayek. It is the classic simple explanation of why Socialism does not work and provides a good foundation in Libertarian Thought. (Available on Amazon.com or your Local Library.)
Post Script: You as a former Military Man already have experienced what a Socialist System is like to live in. It is about as close to the day to day operation of Socialism as you can get.

I knew when fresca liked it that might be the “kiss of death”, but I still stand by every word.
Everyone has their Cross to Bear. My Grandfather grew up in Denver Colorado in the 1880’s and 1890’s (He lived to be almost 100 - 20 days short). I mention this because he grew up at a time when Indian was a fighting word. He grew up having to fight Bigotry and Prejudice every day of his youth - usually fist to face. I have spoken of my father’s courage in Battle - the son of generations of Red Warriors mixed with a little bit of Welsh resistance - he had to put up with “Blanket Ass” and worse. He was 17 when he left the Reservation to join the Marine Corps. He was a fantastic shot because he had to make sure of dinner with as few rounds as possible. They cost money and that was scarce in the 30’s and early 40’s. If you didn’t hit what you aimed at you didn’t eat.
I mention that because of my view that racism is evil wherever and whenever it occurs. It has touched my family’s lives for generations (My Maternal side were mostly Jews). However, it has nothing to do with the Political organization of a society. It is a disease born, of ignorance, xenophobia, and fear. It is cultural and to some degree an “inbred” fear of “others”. You can see similar irrational prejudice even among people of the same race. It is certainly not rational.
However, Black Americans were beginning to make headway in the early part of the 20th Century before things started to go wrong. In Kansas City a thriving Black Community was doing so well that the Racists in their sick fear they basically destroyed the thriving community. The point though is that in a Libertarian governmental form one of the central points is the protection of the Individual Liberty of ALL citizens without regard to race, religion, or anything Period.
As to your objections:
Soviet Communism was a Socialist System. The full name in English: The Union of Soviet SOCIALIST Republics.
All means of production were under government control (one of the definitions of Socialism).
The Economy was Centrally Planned by the Government. The famous “5 Year Plans” (again a Socialist System).
I have always liked one expression of the Russian Worker’s sense of humor:
“Under Communism Man exploits Man. Under Socialism it is vice versa.”
And the thing we both dislike, decisions made behind closed doors by those who “know best” how we should lead our lives is how a Socialist system operates. We the common folk have little or no say. Take a look at how it works in practice.
George Orwell commented in “Animal Farm”: that everyone was equal except some were more equal than others.
That is how a Socialist system operates - Instead of Corporate Robber Barons you get Rich Government Bureaucrats with Dachas on the Red Sea (owned by the government of course. Ha, ha.).
“We live in a socialist frame with water, police, fire depts. and schools.”
I am not such a purist as to disregard the need for public services OF BENEFIT TO ALL. I would draw that distinction carefully because community services are an agreed upon arrangement and particularly Police and Fire (when honestly run and fairly administered) are of benefit to all whether rich or poor.
I do not like Government Schools. Without going into a long justification for my position which properly would take several pages let me point out a couple of key points:
At the time of the debate for the original Constitution a series of editorials were written in support of the new Constitution. The authors were, James Madison, John Jay and Alexander Hamilton. We know them today as The Federalist Papers. At the time their were no Government Schools and yet these editorials were aimed at the average reading public - the literacy rate was estimated to be about 98% - much higher than it is today. Yet they had no publicly funded education. Abraham Lincoln later on was a self-educated mostly home schooled rural kid who became an Attorney and later...
The first “Public” (Government) School did not open it’s doors until 1840 in Massachusetts. While Public education seems to me to be a good idea our current school system is a massive failure and has simply become another tool of oppression - outcome based education and other mind-numbing programming techniques to create the next generation of placid cud chewing workers for America’s Corporations. Witness the increasing numbers of people who are home schooling or sending their kids to Private schools - despite the financial hardship it creates for some. I had an Accounting Professor (a divorced single mom) who worked 2 Jobs to keep her kids in Private Schools because she was so disgusted with the Government Schools. Visit Charlotte Iserbyte’s Web site for an eyeful (she was a Whistleblower who worked in the Reagan Education Department and was basically fired for leaking some very damaging documents on how the school system was being manipulated to achieve the foregoing).
Her Web site is: http://www.deliberatedumbingdown.com/
You do have one big point with which I agree wholeheartedly. The system has become the problem. As great as our Constitution is there was one MAJOR MAJOR oversight. No mechanism was put in place to allow for the Citizens to challenge government misconduct directly. We have the right to petition for redress of grievances but no way to enforce them short of revolt. A major flaw.
However I would suggest again that Socialist system are much more susceptible to this kind of a problem.
“Where the means of production and political power are in the same hands opposition means death by slow starvation.” Friedrich Von Hayek
And for the “regressive” nature of a Sales Tax. Most of the taxes paid are hidden in the price of the goods and services you buy. Those taxes, remember that is Two-Thirds of taxes collected, are paid without regard to income and are every bit as regressive as a Sales Tax. However, most of the proposals floated for a National Sales Tax have addressed this problem in one form or another. One way would be an annual rebate to anyone below a certain income level. Another would be to exempt certain basic commodities as food, Shelter up to a cutoff point, and work clothing. It is a solvable problem and would be much fairer and less intrusive than the current system.

Cincinnati, Ohio. Just north of Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway. About a mile west of I-75.
You just let me know whenever you feel link slinking your sorry ass into town, I'll be there with bells on. Bring friends, the more the merrier.
Peaceful action is overrated. Lets get dirty.

Circle jerk of tough guys.
Ohio - half baked kid from Springfield with a job at Olive Garden. Guess I'd be pissed off too. What with the IROC in the garage and all.
KPC - Mr. Mom, convinced his wife is screwing around with that shaved-head good looking fellow that works with her. Could it be?
Sheepdog - Drooling shut-in who posts to la.indymedia because that Nessie guy gets all the attention up in San Francisco, and that's not fair.
What a pack of swine.
You girls going to watch the President's Address tonight?
Stay tuned, space cadets...

Simon's little pussyshit dumbass is way to scared to actually back his words up. He is, in action, exactly as he appears in these forums. High and mighty until you apply even a small amount of applied pressure, logic, or pain to him. At which time he pops like a ballon.
He's probably just some 15 yr loser with a severe acne problem slowly going blind from self abuse, putting down others behind the security of anonymity and the internet.
Some day though, somewhere, someone with the right idea is going to apply it right upside his thick, empty skull, and it will be a good day.
BTW, Simon, don't for a minute flatter yourself into thinking you piss me off. I just enjoy beating the shit out of little assholes like you. Or at the very least, exposing your ignorance for what it is in forums like this. Hurry up and die already you little maggot.

Is that all you got, doggie...Is that all Fido brings to the game? Comments about my wife?
How about you? No wife...no...no woman would have you...but maybe another Pvt in Pvt? Maybe...? Nevermind, I won't ask, and you don't have to tell...not that there's anything WRONG with it...

KPC, what would I need with a wife with yours so willing, so unsatisfied?
And Ohio, you're a silly little turd. I know exactly where you come from - mullet country. I went to school at Miami, and no doubt motored by your squalid tenement or trailer many times during my matriculation. No doubt you washed my car or got my Big Mac.
We can arrange our little rendezvous (that's a meeting, KPC) to take place in Oxford, if you prefer. The police are used to my cracking heads there, and the cop shop is clean. Oh, and the emergency room at McCollough Hyde is right down the hill, so you'll have a sporting chance at survival.

Pvt. Fido:"The police are used to my cracking heads there"
Crusing rest stops and Cracking Heads in Oxford? This is the newest gay slang for, what....?
..let me guess....
Yes, I am sure the vice cops are VERY familiar with you there...

I know you'll find this civil tone hard to believe, but bear with me,
I hope you know I didn't post under your name above. It isn't my style to steal other people's nicks and post surreptitiously.
Furthermore, I left work at 5pm and was cooking dinner around the time in question. I only just checked back in on the board.
Now, where were we?
Ah yes, you're a big jerk.
