Studio City Protests Are Heating Up

Studio City Protests Are Heating Up

The Studio City, CA protests, held at Laurel Canyon and Ventura Blvd every Friday from 5 to 7, are really gaining momentum. At the last demonstration, 02.28.03, well over 100 participants showed up. The success of the protests is due to the energetic skills of the organizers Steve and Jocelyne Fine of Neighbors for Peace and Justice (NPJ), Studio City chapter.

But more friction is evident at the demonstrations as well as the war supporters are feeling the pressure of the world wide peace sentiment that was reflected back on February 15. I was personally physically accosted by one such war-supporter at the Studio City protest of February 21. I was shoved from behind as my sign was grabbed. While we played tug of war he ripped the sign from its handle and ran off with it.

Just last Friday a pedestrian deliberately yelled pro-war opinions at the top of his lungs in the faces of as many protestors as he believed he could get away with. Our people deserve kudos for their remarkable constraint. We really have a great group of committed and conscientious people here.

Also, this last Friday, we had a motorized supporter pulled over by a police officer for honking her horn in solidarity with our message. Here the protestors were a lot less forgiving. I saw little more than a blur as ten or more of them flew by me on their way to confront the officer. By the time I caught up with them they were defending the motorist with fervor and a fire I have rarely witnessed. This moment has defined the movement for me. I was so proud to call these brave citizens friends and to be a part of this historical movement. There was no reason for me to say a word. The situation was being handled just fine and as a direct result of their passion the driver, I believe, received at most a warning (I have no direct confirmation of this. She may well have been ticketed. I gave the passenger NPJ’s email address and as of yet they haven’t received any word).

Yes, things are heating up. And although even the negative responses from the drivers-by are increasing, anti-war support from them is increasing more. Smiles, waves, honks and two-finger peace signs abound in ever greater numbers. The positive energy is just phenomenal.

Also, this last Friday we were accompanied by a well known actor who read a Mark Twain poem at the end of the night. There are two reasons I don’t wish to mention his name: First, out of respect for his privacy. Second, I don’t wish to trivialize the demonstrations by turning them into star-sighting events.

Lastly, let me comment on this. I am suspicious of these “celebrity” elitists who are suddenly monopolizing the movement. Even before 9-11 the media ignored the hard work and diligence of common, everyday citizens like you and me. But now that these celebrities have recently decided to finally voice an opinion on something the media focuses only on them. Where were Mike Farrell and Martin Sheen during the pre 9-11 G8 protests? Why haven’t they been speaking out the last ten years against the horrors of American poverty that presently inflicts 50 million of us? As far as I’m concerned anyone can join the peace movement but no one has a right to take it over. After all, this is not a peace movement… it is a social justice movement of which peace in Iraq is only one goal. Are Farrell and Sheen going to continue their involvement when the war is over and the protests return to the strict objective of social justice? Of course the media elite will only interview other members of the social elite but the best thing these celebrities can do to help is to join us… don’t try to lead us… and differ to the media the real hardworking people responsible for igniting and popularizing this incredible movement; people like you and me.

COME JOIN US IN STUDIO CITY! Or attend the NPF demonstrstion nearest you!

Come to Studio City Protests

Actually... Mike Farrell has been very active in the "End the Death Penalty" campaign for the last 10 years or so. Sheen has also been doing activism around poverty, farm workers, School of the Americas, and other issues. Because the major corporate media does not report on this... you assume that Farrell and Sheen are silent.

Many other Actors are silently involved in activism, but because of the nature of their work it is very risky to go publicl. Give them some credit. I also oppose the "cult of the individual" and hero worship... and think that people place entirely too much importance on Stars. But if famous Actors want to get involved in activism, they should be welcomed with open arms just like everyone else.

That being said... the Studio City protests are wonderful. Neighborhood people of all types are coming out to demonstrate... everyone is encouraged to join. The protests are every Friday from 5 - 7pm at the corner of Laurel Canyon and Ventura Blvd.

Studio City is my neighborhood. I had no idea until now that my neighbors were gathering to show opposition to the foolish and self-destructive war plans pushed upon us.

Best of all, Friday is a regular day off for me.

Thanx for the heads-up, and see you Friday!

War is a must. Shut the hell up with these anti-war sentiments. Let's say another 9-11 happens and this war never occurred because of people like you? Would you then jump on the bandwagon of all the people screaming at Prez. Bush criticizing him for not doing anything when he should have done something to prevent it? OR, would you continue to participate in these anti-war protests until the next 9-11? Being anti-war is being anti-American. Please just move out of this country and be w/ the French. You people are not welcome here!!!!

Protestors are not patriots

by Protestors are not patriots Tuesday, Mar. 18, 2003 at 2:48 PM

The definition of patriot is One who loves, supports, and defends one's country. If you call going to communist sponsered rallies, burning American flags, calling Bush an equal threat to Hussein, this war being about oil, then you truly are a complete idiot.

The true patriots are the men and women on the front lines, support them you anti-war communist B A S T A R D S! They're the ones dying so that you can do you unpatriotic marches!

...made in China...They're the ones dying

by Jay Tuesday, Mar. 18, 2003 at 3:41 PM

Have you ever heard of Gulf War Illness? Why don't you go sit your fat ass on a couch and wave your "MADE IN CHINA" flag while our brothers and sisters die in a war for $$$ or maybe when they come back they could get sick and our Government can give them prozac and tell them it's "JUST stress" ---- about 10,000 soldiers have died since they have returned and I don't need my brother to be one of them. So stop trying to send our troops to their death for nothing or maybe go in my brothers place and let him come home!

Hey, Sheepdog: i've noticed many anti-war folks seem to have a problem with their vocabulary. is anti-war always pro-profanity? it seems as though you resort to foul and ignorant remarks when challenged. can't you just sit down and chant "OHM"? i think the restraint and compassion of our soldiers in Iraq shows much more "peace" than you. few people are "pro-war". read your Bible. war is, unfortunately, a necessary evil. God said there would be wars and rumors of war. where do you think your freedom of speech came from? you certainly didn't earn it. others spilled their blood for your rights. look closely at the pictures of the people in Iraq. look at what Hussein had been doing. do you honestly, honestly believe he could have been "talked to"? grow up, whatever your age. freedom of any kind comes at a price. one, it would seem, your ilk (look it up) are not prepared to pay. God bless America.

dear eric,
how clever of you to totally change the topic from war in the middle east to abortion clinics. is that the best you have?? why is it that i must tolerate your point of view if i want to be considered open minded, yet you are obviously intolerant of my views?? or at least my right to express them. i do happen to believe that a developing child is a life, but i am not a "religious nutcase" who believes in blowing up abortion clinics. in fact, i don't believe that the law will ever be the solution to this delemma, but rather people's hearts have to change to where they believe the death of 6 million babies a year is too important to be used as a "pat response" to a comment or discussion about anything perseived as threatening the view of the left. by the way, eric, you might want to get your mother to read this to you, and help you write a thoughtful response. all of this, the war, abortion, etc., is too important for flip answers.

He's not a conservative

His name isn't Eric either. His name is Gregory Bullock and his alias is KOBEHQ. He is the owner/operator of:

www.kobehq.com

and he likes to think "outside the box". At least, that's what he calls his dementia.
