March 2, 2003
To: President Abdullah Gül
Your Excellency,
The great majority of Canadians are disgusted by the Bush administration's
schemes to sabotage international justice and its unilateral push towards war
in the Middle East. Today, the Canadian movement to find peaceful solutions
and to resist American belligerance has been greatly encouraged by the
example of Turkey.
Canadians know what it is like to be under intense American diplomatic
pressure. The Free Trade agreements with the U.S. (FTA and NAFTA) which we made
the mistake of signing have tied our economies to that of the U.S. and have
given that country huge and constant leverage over our own. Any sovereign
decisions made by Canada which go against the will of American leaders can now
entail major economic repurcussions. And as I understand it, Turkey, being the
beneficiary of large amounts of American aid, has also become vulnerable to
American manipulations.
But this weekend has shown that hopes for a world based on international
justice are still very much alive. Our Prime Minister made it clear that U.S.
President George W. Bush cannot command Regime Changes at will... and the
Parliament of Turkey has made it clear that the Turkish people cannot be bribed
into turning over their territory to be used as a staging ground for American
Imperialism.
Today Canadians are saluting Turkish Parliamentarians - as well as our Prime
Minister - for putting integrity, international justice, and good sense to
the forefront. This is a proud moment of international solidarity.
Kutlamalar Turkey!
