Rally at Taco Bell Corporate Headquarters, Irvine California. Photos today at the Taco Bell Convergence that over 1,000 people attended.

Farmworkers gather in Irvine, California to demand that Taco Bell insure fair wages and an end to slavery in the fields.

Photos of people with red bandanas are among over 70 people at Taco Bell Headquarters who are in their 5th day of one of the largest hunger strikes in US labor history.

Why

by burger king Monday, Mar. 03, 2003 at 1:08 AM

Why must this be a joke? This is a great action. Support from Toronto. It's about time people joined with strikers and see the links between ourselves as workers and others in fast food, on assembly lines, in offices, in banks etc.,

We are one! We work for a living...we must support each other against neo-liberalism, capitalism, and war no matter where on our planet it is.

I'd protest but

by Diogenes Monday, Mar. 03, 2003 at 2:49 AM

I refuse to eat fried dog food and plastic cheeses anyway. If you want the real thing go to Chuey's, or La Salsa, or just about any corner mom and pop Mexican food joint in So. Cal.

Taco Bell - yuck.

In all your falling all over yourself there was no mention of what these beaners are striking for? What's the problem?

For bringing up the lists of grievances

found at the beginning of this thread.

Uh, not there

by fresca Monday, Mar. 03, 2003 at 6:48 AM

Nope can't find it. Unless you mean that vague nonsense about "slavery in the field". What exactly does that mean? I just ask, because, the word slavery has a very definite meaning, and if they're going to use it they better be using it right.

Okay I'll bite

by Sheepdog Monday, Mar. 03, 2003 at 7:01 AM

I believe slavery is not a precise definition.

Point. If I may use a broad term involved in such

matters, fair wages means a living wage and possibly

collective bargaining rights to determine heath

and safety issues.

The cost to the suppliers would be minimally impacted

and the dispute would end.

And further more...

by Sheepdog Monday, Mar. 03, 2003 at 7:22 AM

None of this applies unless it is done by white people to people of color. Black on black slavery doesn't count and is perfectly acceptable.

slavery?

by yutaka Monday, Mar. 03, 2003 at 8:18 AM

you asked about the use of the word slavery by the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. In fact, the CIW has been instrumental in bringing to justice at least three cases of modern day slavery in Florida. Workers were held against their will and forced to work on the fields on threat of physical violence, even death. The CIW website: www.ciw-online.org has links to news stories in Florida mainstream newspapers that outline these cases. In at least one case, the leaders of the slavery ring were convicted and sentenced to several years in prison. So, it is not a turn of phrase or some rhetoric about 'wage-slavery'.

You can read the full story here:

In particular, you can read about some of the 6 cases of slavery that have been prosecuted by the Department of Justice in southern Florida's agricultural fields at this link. 3 of those cases have been in tomatoes:

what kind of person fervently supports and defends the bosses of the world? is this a little ugly? did you want to grow into such an ugly adult when you were a good kid? or were you always like that.... kissing ass and breaking solidarity with your peers?

Labor unions really do suck

by Bush Admirer Friday, Mar. 14, 2003 at 5:59 AM

Geez, the LA IMC thought police are really active tonight. I think all of my posts have been deleted.

Censorship reigns here.

That's because left wing radicals are impotent when it comes to defending their warped views against a conservative like me. They'd rather delete than stand and fight.

Hopeless weenies.
